Classic Twin-Clutch Battle: BMW M3 vs Porsche 911 Carrera

Is the squeaky-clean, push-button, microchip-managed future of motoring grim? It’s hard to say. Ignition keys are disappearing. So are clutch pedals. And toxic gases. And the risk of violent death.

Your outlook may depend on whether you’d rather pilot a real 427 Cobra or an X-Wing fighter, the prices of which are about the same. Luke Skywalker can’t drive a stick, but his switch-throwing skills are legendary. Then again, Carroll Shelby could probably kick Luke’s bony butt. The debate rages.

We put our bony butts in two examples of the future of push-button, high-performance driving. Summoning the Force to safely pick a champion, we headed for the coiled back roads of California and the corkscrewing ribbon of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The new BMW M3 is well-known to us and to you, now that you’re digesting our fourth—fourth! When will your letters pleading for more ever end?—comparison test of the M3 in 15 months. Like a solid Hollywood franchise, BMW’s ranking joy toy and its 414-hp V-8 fusillade have us churning out endless popcorn sequels. The M3’s lineup includes a sedan and a convertible, plus a coupe. Our coupe, base price $59,625, has silver-blue paint over rust-colored leather, with $13,895 in options. Almost all the boxes were checked, including the Premium, Technology, and Cold-Weather packs, plus the new $2900 “M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic,” a $10 way of saying paddle-shifted seven-speed with programmable shift maps.

We’ve seen the M3 dispatch a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and an Audi RS 4, a Lexus IS F, and the stupendous Nissan GT-R. So much for the prelims. This time, the M3 is pitted again a Porsche sneering, “I must blake you!” ?The revamped, direct-injected Porsche 911 Carrera makes 345 horsepower from its six-cylinder engine and has an optional transmission called PDK, or Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. It’s a 10-euro way of saying a “double-clutch” seven-speed, and it costs $4080 on top of the Carrera’s $76,395 base price. To make the 911 and M3 prices better match up, we begged Porsche for a stripper Carrera (the Carrera S has 40 more horses and starts $10,600 higher). Porsche complied—perhaps for the last time—lending us one with a $750 XM radio and $140 floor mats and painted, fittingly, in New York–taxi yellow. You talkin’ to me?

The dilemma: how to sit in judgment. Should we pick the car that best re-creates the analog, gear-jamming, life-in-your-hands rush of the old days in the digital, fingertip-operated, safety-netted world of today—or the one we just like better? Here’s our answer.

Stupid review from C&D again, again, and again....

A car 380lb heavier wins again for the reason of price, back seat, and quietness. R U kidding me? Do I need a car magazine to tell me that?

No wonder Detroit is in trouble......

"A car 380lb heavier wins again for the reason of price, back seat, and quietness. R U kidding me? Do I need a car magazine to tell me that?"

apparently you do, since in addition to what you said the M3 was also faster, a better drive at the limit, more comfortable, better ergonomically, better equipped, and less expensive.

Or do those not matter either?

Ya right.... So can you tell me why C&D picks M3 over GT-R? Mind you, it's for the same reasons I mentioned.

HOW STUPID IS THAT THEN?

the GT-R review isn't this review. You want to bitch at C&D over their GT-R/M3 comparison, go ahead. I don't even care if you want to complain over this one, as long as you can find some justifiable reason. So far, you haven't. The M3 basically did everything better, faster, and more comfortably, for less money. The only reason to spend the extra $8k for the Carrera (and that's for a stripped one) is that it's a Porsche. And hey, I love Porsche, so that might win out most of the time... just not this one.

'the GT-R review isn't this review', Ya, right. So you can change the criteria every time as long as BMW wins? I believe next time M3 will win over ENZO for even more reasons.

If you are so fond of biased shit from C&D, go ahead, I won't try to convince you the other way.

I'll take Motor Trend anytime.

MotorTrend? Really? That's your choice for an "unbiased" magazine? I was trying to take you seriously there for a minute, now I know you're crazy.

Look, let's try a reading comprehension exercise, ok? I said I understood having a problem with the M3/GT-R comparison. You want to have a problem with it too? Go ahead, I'm not going to argue it. I also said I wouldn't even have an issue with someone having a problem with THIS comparison, provided they could provide justification BESIDES "C&D just loves BMW! Look at the GT-R comparison!!!" Because that's just fanboy crap. One has nothing to do with the other. If that GT-R comparison DID NOT EXIST, the M3 would have STILL WON THIS COMPARISON. It was faster (and a better track AND road car), more comfortable, better ergonomically, more feature-laden, and fully loaded was $8k less than a stripper Carrera. The ONLY stat the Porsche beat the M3 in was fuel economy. That's it. So why exactly would the Porsche have won in that test??? Just because it's a Porsche? Well ok then, because ironically enough, that was one thing C&D took points AWAY from the BMW for -- under "CONS:" it read "only a BMW". So as much as you think C&D kneels at the altar of all things BMW, they still knocked the M3 for being one.

Despite it being "only a BMW", the M3 won. It won. Period. You're just going to have to deal with it. Porsche isn't going to win every comparison test. And neither will the M3. Not even in C&D.

BMW M3 is definitely one of the best sport sedan/coupe out there. But the Nissan GT-R peformance both on the street and track make the M3 look like child play.

Too bad the second you take the GT-R to redline your warranty is voided. And besides, isn't the Lexus IS-F more of a M3 competitor? The Lexus isn't even good enough to make this comparison.

Lexus-

With all honesty have you seen a GT-R on the streets of Newport Beach or Irvine?

I have, and that car is not to pretty.

Get the BMW and look pretty :-)

M3 or 911. A battle of automotive icons.

Like Ali vs Frazier.
Lakers vs Celtics.
Yankees vs Red Sox.

Two larger than life type-A personalities, rich in automotive history, with stellar blue-chip reputations forever battling for the hearts and minds (and wallets) of sports car enthusiasts.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Wow, I love the M3 but to say it stands neck to neck with the 911 in "automotive greatness" is pushing it.

The 911 has participated and won the 24 hour Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona etc. etc. It's history is unsurpassed in the automotive world.

2 great cars but when it comes to being an "icon", nothing can hold a candle to the 911, whether you like porsche or not.

Merry Christmas to all.

Drove them both! The M3 doesn't hold a candle, it holds a blow torch to the Carrera!

The Turbo is another story but that's $60k more dough!

Anyone with half a brain would understand that C&D HAD to pick the M3 over the low end Carrera (i.e. not the S) because they had to justify their stupidity of picking the M3 over the GTR

Dandy - since you clearly understand the truth, thought you might enjoy this if you haven't seen it yet:

I don't understand why this review has everyone so bothered? The M3 outperforms the base Carrera as a track car & everyday cruiser, plus has a back seat & undercuts the Carrera's price...Someone please explain to me why the 911 should have won?

I like the M3 over the Porsche because it combines luxury and outstanding engine performance. The Porsche is a great sports car but I wish the interior was nicer and had more features- also really a 2 passenger car. The M3 has the best combination of technology without going too far with extra gadgets or lots of plastic like the Japanese do with their cars. I recently bought the M3 hard top convertible- awesome combination of performance with room for my kids or friends in the backseat and it is fun to drive at any speed. The convertible aspect limits comparisons if that is important and for me that was a must. I love the styling and it turns heads wherever I go. P.S> Sales of M3s in 2008 were up 50% year to year despite the terrible car market.....that tells you where people are putting their money!
