Mad At Auto Execs And Their Perks? UAW To Retreat Over Holidays To $33M Course THEY OWN!

Mad At Auto Execs And Their Perks? UAW To Retreat Over Holidays To $33M Course THEY OWN!

Even as the industry struggles with massive losses, the UAW brass continue to own and operate a $33 million lakeside retreat in Michigan, complete with a $6.4 million designer golf course. And it's costing them millions each year.

Click here to see photos of the UAW's $33 million retreat.

The UAW, known more for its strikes than its slices, hosts seminars and junkets at the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center in Onaway, Mich., which is nestled on "1,000 heavily forested acres" on Michigan's Black Lake, according to its Web site.

But the Black Lake club and retreat, which are among the union's biggest fixed assets, have lost $23 million in the past five years alone, a heavy albatross around the union's neck as it tries to manage a multibillion-dollar pension plan crisis.

Critics call it a resort for union leaders that wastes money from union dues.

How are my tax dollars at work? The union has pension funds and holds real estate, just like AIG, or any of the insurance companies that DID get tax dollars.

But the union hasn't asked for tax dollars. Not a penny.

I am glad that Bush's daughters are too stupid to run for president.

First off , this is located in the northern parts of Lower Mi; almost bodrering Upper Mi. and I dont think there is to many execs. batting a golf ball in the snow over the holiday vacation. Second, this is a public golf corse and built with good intentions until the economy soured . Yes ,it is owned by the UAW but the members do have to pay a healthy fee to play there . It is also open to the public and the fees they have tpo pay are about 20% more than one of those devils advocates UAW members as they are called on this sight . Yes, it a nice peiece of real estate and it is available to all residents of Michigan which I am sure they are all proud of and hoping for better days . No, it is not UAW members that are there right now smoking big cigars while many parts of the country are battling winter . Ajent OO1, you sure know how to build a fire by selective writing .

Thats good info to know but at the same time when they need a bridge loan (not a bailout) is this really something that they should own? Don't you think it might be better if it were sold off to a private investor or hotel chain?

Not according to recent news reports. Supposedly, the Black Lake Retreat has lost money the past 5 years...that would be before the "sour" economy and not such a great investment.

In general, however, I don't really have a specific problem with the UAW investing in property IF their membership agrees and knows that their dues are being used for this type of thing. HOWEVER, it's quite apparent to me that unions are no different than politicians. The union brass make out like bandits while the general membership suffers and then the "brass" blame it all on management, the boogeyman, Bush, yada, yada, yada.

I guess that's why the unions and the Dems make such great partners...they always want to blame someone else for problems they created.

They should dump it immediately. I respect a lot that the Unions do, and have done, I doubt we would have the labor laws and good pay in non union jobs without the Unions. But this is not something they should be involved in. Dump it now.

I don't think dumping real estate is a good strategy, short term. The union has lots of pension liabilities, etc, and they should sell it when they need the money at a higher value.

No surprise a real estate investment isn't doing well in Michigan over the last few years.

Hey ya big dummies-the UAW is the one that built and maintain this. The Gov't has nothing to do with it nor does your tax dollars. Pres Bush has nothing to do with it either as the UAW never really sees fit to endorse Republicans ya know. (hint think Democrat) If you think because Bush supports a plan to provide cash to the big three automakers he is somehow linked to this, again ya big dummies- think again. The beloved Labor Unions are the one to blame- if you don't like that- complain about them and how they choose to invest their member's Dues. Ya big dummies.

Unions have pension funds, etc, that hold assets. They own lots of hotels and resort properties as investments.

I don't know much about this particular item, but it's existence doesn't seem to have much to do with anything

Don't worry about the Big3 and their jets. If Detroit's execs need to fly anywhere, they can just call up AIG or Citibank or FNM/FRE to get a ride wherever they need to go.

I am retired from the UAW staff and live near the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center on Black Lake in Northeast Michigan. It is obvious that this group of spies doesn't know much about Michigan or the UAW or apparently how to do some basic research on the web. Cheboygan County has had almost 5 feet of snow fall since October 1. It was -5 degrees out on new year's eve. Center is closed from about late november to early march every year. Regardless when open the center is used primarily by rank and file uaw members and their families.

You can find out about the Center by checking it out on the web.

Building started in 1967 and Walter Reuther and his wife May died in a plane crash on a visit to the center in 1970. The public golf course at the Center was opened in 2000.

The UAW pays all expenses for a week long education program for rank and file UAW members and their entire families. it has rooms for about 400 guests. Rank and file members apply for a scholarship to Black Lake through their local unions.

The current financing mechanism is provided by the interest on the UAW strike fund. I frankly do not understand why anyone questions spending membership funds for a member's family to spend a week of vacation/training at a nice place like Black Lake. What is wrong with that or would you rather have the money spent on strike benefits or UAW staff salaries and benefits?

The current worldwide economic difficulties of every auto manufacturer affects their unions but the UAW is not asking for a loan from the federal government to maintain union operations.

To those that suggest that the property should be sold, you may want to know that the Michigan real estate market, particularly resort properties is down somewhat. But in any event, that is up to the UAW membership. I assure you that the appropriations for the building of the Center and its annual costs have been approved by the UAW membership at every UAW convention.

Just the usual right wing union bashing. Imagine workers wanting to have a voice in their terms and conditions of employment rather than having to accept whatever the boss deems appropriate.
