Bmw M3’s (E46) engine preparing for retirement
The E46 M3’s 3.2-liter straight-six, one of the seamless, extremely driver-friendly powerplants, is now going to be retired. Although the new 2010 Bmw Z4 will utilize inline-six powerplants, starting from a 2.5-liter 201 hp to a 302 hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter, it won’t be receiving the 343 hp naturally aspirated 3.2-liter unit. That points to the fact that the ancient Z4, which has lately gone out of production, was the last production Bmw to employ the renowned engine.

I give ChuckG37 ten minutes until he is commenting that the Nissan VQ V6 engine is more advanced and superior than this retired M I6.

Damn, I was off by 4 minutes.

"I would honestly push for BMW to develop a modern V6 engine using the VQ as the benchmark. I sincerely wish for this because it will make BMW more competitive."

Chuck, do you realize that BMW's much heralded inline 6 is one of the defining reasons why their cars are praised so often and sell so well? I6 and BMW are pretty much synonomous. Also, Infiniti is trying to be more competitive with BMW (the benchmark) -- not the other way around.

Chuck, the VQ didn't make Ward's cut this year. The 3.0 bi-turbo I6 did though.

Do you ever get tired of doing Nissan PR?

I wish people would take 1 ½ minutes to do research before the spout if off opinion as fact.

In fact you “benchmark VQ” didn’t make the list.

Still waiting for the proof that the inline engine is obsolete.

The only advantages the V6 has over an I6 motor that I can think of is that it can meet current emission standards and can be placed further back in the engine bay for more 50:50 balance. Those 2 factor I can live without and will take the I6 every time. Also the engine note is something that cant be matched.

Once again I challenge you to show me ONE review, automotive analyst, or automotive engineer the states the inline six is obsolete. If you can’t then just accept the fact your opinion is make believe.
