Ford takes on Lexus with Active Park Assist, parallel-park with a push of a button
Ford has announced that it will take on Lexus with a new feature called Active Park Assist for its Lincoln brand. The new feature will be available in mid-2009 on the 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan and the new 7-seater Lincoln MKT Crossover that will make its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month.

The Active Park Assist uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking. It the calculates the optimal steering angle and quickly steers the vehicle into a parking spot.

Ford says that the EPAS technology also improves fuel-economy by...

Seriously. It's a basic driving function that everyone should have learned. Why make it sound so difficult to do.

1. Pull up 3/4 of the way to the car in front of the spot you are parking in.

2. Cut the wheel hard in the direction of the space.

3. Reverse slowly until your car is at a 45 degree to the curb and then back straight a few more feet.

4. Stop the car and cut the wheel all the way to the opposite direction, then resume reversing.

5. Stop, put the wheel in the opposite direction towards the space again and put the car in gear and move forward to center out.

I swear it amazes me how many people cannot get even the basics down. For instance, they dont stop to cut the wheel instead they move the wheel while backing up or going forward which is a waste cause you are not getting the full turn in you could be. Ugh.

Due to the increasing suburbification of America, parallel parking is becoming more and more of a non-issue, almost a novelty.

You're just jealous because Nissan can't successfully market a flagship in which to have such an option.

Nissan has nothing to compete with the LS. Don't even think about the Q45 it has nothing on a Lexus, not even the GS. The M45(Fuga) is Nissan's flagship.

A technology that will be perfected by whatever company. But a technology that Lexus had the balls to even start...so kudos to them on that. Everybody else are now just followers, wether you like it or not...

I would special order the MKt without the park gizmo.

Electronics Junk=Higher repair and Maintenance costs.

The Front Bearing Replacement on Rear Drive Ford Prior to 97 was a 5 minute job, now you have to pull apart the whole spindle and run a wire up to the engine compartment for the Anti-lock and stability control.

Who needs it.

I like Ford but am I the only one who thinks that their money would have better spend on marketing, and continued improvemnets in driving dynamics and quality. I have not seen a made rush copy Lexus on this so why should they.

It's really not that difficult to parallel park. Don't quote me on this but i'll bet that this feature is not an option in other countries other than the US.

Lincoln has been chasing Lexus lately. I think Ivy League Soccer Moms with impressive resumes have been hired to turn the company around.

Big Mistakes going with Front Drive Platforms at a time when Caddilac plans to go RWD.

The RWD Lincoln were always superior in drive quality vs. Front Drives.

I don't know how Ford is going to build Dual Clutch Gearboxes and squish everything under the hood.

Meantime the Asian builders are going for Big Rear Drive Sedans, and Ford seems to be taking the abandon approach like Chrysler did with the Imperial.

Execs at the Helm steering these companies on an uncertain course.

Lincoln is getting back at Lexus for copying the 'L' in Lincoln instead of the 'C' in cadillac or chrysler. it could have been Cexus.

I don't think Lincoln of the late 1980s/early 1990s had anything that merited copying. As a matter of fact, to this day, they still don't.
