Toyota to stay top-selling car brand in the U.S.
Toyota Motor Corp. will most likely keep its top seller status in the U.S., beating out Chevrolet and Ford for the second year in a row. Toyota topped Chevrolet for the number one spot last year by 41,296 vehicles selling a total of 2.3 million. Sluggish SUV sales due to high gas-prices helped Toyota increase its lead over Ford and Chevrolet earlier this year. The Japanese automaker sold a total of 1.8 million vehicles through November, 185,200 more than Chevrolet.

GM would not comment on the report made by the Detroit Free Press but Ford said that it is more focused on...

“In times like these, who’s on first is less important than who’s still on the team, meaning who’s still selling cars and trucks,” said George Pipas, Ford’s U.S. sales analyst.

What a load of b.s. That like saying o yea I hurt my leg yesterday so I cant play at 100%. Ford just admit you cant be a competitor without Mazda and Volvo.

veyron1001,

We get it, you hate domestics no matter what. Shut up already. Your comments are laughable at best, but mostly just annoying.

If Honda or some other foreign company said exactly what George Pipas said, you'd be all about how intelligent they are and how fiscally responsible they are.

Pipas is right, it does a company no good to fight for sales king #1 if they are making no money.

Nothing new all cars Toyota makes are like appliances. Best example is to compare Toyota to Frigidaire now they are reliable reasonably price but Frigidaire has the upper hand on the reliability and design therefore it sells but since most of that at toyota is gone it really makes me wonder why they are stilling doing good.

well, that's one of the reasons so many people BUY toyotas.

how many frigidaires would get sold if they needed servicing EVERY SIX MONTHS? toyotas can live witn NO servicing beyond oil changes for YEARS at a time. (not recommended. but toyotas DO endure neglect/abuse far better than other brands.)

why is GM unable to make THEIR cars more reliable than appliances?

How about the fact that Toyota said "claim denied " when you did not check in at the toyota severice counter every three months/300O miles if the engine sludged up, .. and if the engine was still running they would pressure wash the inards instead of replacing it so it would make it to the end of the warranty

if owners DID have their oil changed every 3 months (at any place, not just toyota dealers), their engines would not have sludged up.

that issue was due to: 1) toyota stretching a bit too far in optimizing fuel efficiency, with extremely close tolerances and passageways, and 2) the very fact of toyotas being neglect friendly, resulting in many owners NEGLECTING regular oil changes.

in any case, 1) the actual percentage of sludged engines was miniscule in comparison to total production. 2) other brands, mostly domestic, have also had sludge problems. 3) just because toyota was over generous in providing brand new engines for tundra owners (all of ~27) who got improperly heat treated camshafts, one shouldn't expect ALL engine problems to be treated as generously. what other carmaker will do more than just fix ACTUAL defects?

or in the case of the sludges, cover OWNER NEGLECT?

when the nearest dealer or even plain repair shop is hundreds of miles away, no other cars/trucks are as highly desired as toyotas.

even in the u.s., toyota (and honda) dealers number only about 1/2 as many as chevy or ford dealers. not that distance is as much a problem here, but the volume of work done in the service depts would not be enuff to justify more dealers.

correction: toyota dealers in u.s. are 1/5 the amount of chevy dealers! ~1500 vs. ~7500 (and decling, as some fold their tents...)
