Audi's New A8 Promises To Break BMW's 7 Series Stranglehold On The Luxury Flagship Market

Audi is charging ahead with its third-generation A8, set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in the fall of 2009. Once released, it will battle a slightly face-lifted Mercedes-Benz S-class, expected to be unveiled next spring, and BMW's all-new 2009 7-series. But unlike the rather conservative 7-series, which backed away from the audacious styling of its predecessor, the next Audi A8 will show a new look and carry the brand forward stylistically.

Audi's chief designer Stefan Sielaff explains: "The first generation was very dogmatic and product-design-like. With the second generation, the theme was 'elegance'—softer, flowing lines. The upcoming third generation will be stronger, sharper, and more precise."

your kidding right you must have not seen any audis lately, as they all look the same, are bland, and ultra conservative. the new generations look just like the old ones for the most part, and they are by far the most conservative and boring when it comes to styling.........more flash...lmao

bmwdrvr, do you know anything about auto design? Audi makes similar looking cars for many reasons, the primary being:

1.) They want to build and maintain a reputation where every car produced is unmistakeably Audi (do you see any bmw's without the "dual kidney" grill?)
2.)It works, the new style balances aggression with sophistication

you guys are right how dare I, say something negative about Audi, blasphemy, to have my own opinion, oh wow surely this must not catch on.....grow up.....everyone doesnt have to like every car. and anyone tht doesnt think their cars look alike, and like the last ones is blind, that pic looks like a big a5 sedan, as does every other illustration for future audis. dont be mad at me be mad at their desighners.....

"your kidding right you must have not seen any audis lately, as they all look the same, are bland, and ultra conservative."

They do all look alike, I'll give you that. But they DON'T look conservative, and they certainly don't look like the older cars. A 3 Series looks staid and boring next to the new A4. I would still buy it over an A4, but that's the truth.

no bmwdrvr, you are right, kudos to you for being so daring. Your posts dismissing the brand in EVERY Audi post are refreshing & unpredictable. Can't wait for the next Audi post...

icompliment if it deserves it but im surely not the only one that thinks except the crazed audi fans, no one believes that anything from Audi is fresh, the interiors and exteriors look identical across the board, there is no creativity, they even look like the last generations. Im not saying they are ugly cars, just not fresh in anyway shape of form, its funny I say the same thing magazines, and other posters have been saying aboutthem for years and all of sudden im wrong..lol i love the audi crazed as their first defense to someone saying something negative about audi is, that it isnt audi its that your bias....grow up. Now you have a whole line of cars that will be based on the same platform and all look the same, and just like the last generations with a mild refresh....great...how creative...lmao

all i read was "new interior design" and i am a happy camper. i hate the fact that all audis have the same interior but hopefully this might change things. Go Audi!

THANK YOU! I totally agree! I hate the A4/A5/A6/Q5/Q7 interior design with a passion! I've realized it recently. Not only is it overly cluttered, but the materials aren't even up to par. It's not elegant but it's not cool in a "buttons are fancy" sort of way either. I hope they come up with a simpler look, like the current A8's interior but more modern and with new materials.

I hope it doesnt look like the A4,5,6,or 7 audi has a killer interior but I am so sick of the same exact exterior shape for every single AUDI. I like AUDI's BUT they could use some FRESH MEAT in the exterior design department

The A8 already outsells the 7-Series in Europe, China, and Russia. So, that is no big deal there. Audi is aiming for improved sales in the North American market, though there are plenty of A8s running around LA lately.

Can anyone honestly tell me that the A8 in that illustration looks different from an A6 or an A4?? If you're going to plop down almost $100K for a vehicle, it shouldn't look like its cheaper siblings.

ohh that grille. Why is it keep getting bigger and fatter? That looks so thick. Poor rendition, i hope new A8 front end looks quite different from that and also Audi change their headlights profile. Make something curvy with more lines like BMW X6 or new Z4...etc and not the current rectangualr boxes with LEDs inside, they look like soap and are very bland.

Yes Chuck, the Infiniti Q45, which hasn't been produced since 2006, certainly is still one of the class leaders. Riiiight.

The only thing broken is the fake wood paneling of a 1999 Infiniti Q45. The Bose tape deck is probably malfunctioning at this point as well.

So do I. In fact, of the luxo-barges the A8 is by far the slickest, in terms of design. I think even the first aluminium bodied model still looks nice.

Are you guys on crack? Audi has been releasing some of the most progressive designs for the luxury market. I'm not even an Audi fan and can admit this. I could care less if they all look the same as long as they all look good (a4, a5, rs8).

And in the US, the LS460 is the top seller in the segment.

I'm a S Class fan all the way. My father has owned one since 1985 and I now have one myself. It's the pinnacle of full size luxury sedans, a world renowned name plate and model.

With that said, I like the new Audi's that are coming out. I may seriously consider getting rid of my perfectly fine LS and make it my second Audi in my garage. I can't wait to see the new A8.

It's a hard market to buy a car in. The XJ, A8, S Class, 7 Series, and LS are all great cars, some more prestigious than others but their all worth the money, no joke. Flagships you simply can't go wrong with. It all boils down to preference, taste, and brand loyalty.

I think that the current A8 spanked the W220 S-Class when it first came out. The W221 is certainly the best, though.

Dream on... The S class is the most over engineered car (turd) on the planet. Remember when they made the car so big they had to have little antennae pop out of the rear qtr panel so you could see the end of the thing?

In comparison to the svelt 7 series, the S class has always been the fat blowhard banker everybody hates, but is always too intimidated to admit. How anybody thinks the 7 series comes in second to that is beyond me.

The new A4 looks like a Ford Taurus. Incredibly boring. The A5 is gorgeous but Audi screwed up the A4. It doesn't look like a luxury car. It looks like something that would compete with the Camry instead of the 3 series.

Never cared that the A8 sold in huge numbers. The fewer the better. This car is something that you aspire to own. The current A4 is great. Side note, choosing between the A4 and MB new C Class is difficult at best. Now back to the A8. I hope Audi will ship the std A8 and keep the A8L as an option, same as Jaguar, BMW and MB.
