Toyota and Honda sales declined more than their U.S. competitors

DETROIT – Toyota and Honda's U.S. sales fell more than their U.S. competitors' in December, with Toyota's 37 percent decline and Honda's 35 percent drop showing the Japanese company's popular fuel-efficient models were little help as consumers steered clear of showrooms due to the dismal economy.

Toyota's 2008 sales fell 16 percent to 2.22 million, compared with Ford's 1.98 million. Detroit-based GM's 2008 sales totaled 2.95 million, down 23 percent from the year before. Honda Motor Co.'s 2008 sales fell 8.2 percent.

Analysts expected auto sales industrywide to drop up to 40 percent in December as consumers remain uncertain about the economy and their jobs.

The auto Web site Edmunds.com predicted sales for the full year will total just over 13 million, down 18 percent from 2007 and the lowest level since 1992.

Duh. Toyota and Honda sales number had been going up for a few years till 2007 while the us makers' sales number was heading downward. The bigger gainer faces the bigger loss when economy turmoil hits.

this comment makes no sense.

sure, the larger players will fall more in raw numbers, but they fell PROPORTIONATELY more--which is very surprising. honda, however, did the best of all for the full year. not surprising.

of coarse they would be worse in numbers compared to the domestics...but Toyota and Honda set the bar so high that they did it to themselves and can actually afford to do so. Rivals have not ill affect on them. Remember who the loosers still are at the end of day, and have admit to that...that is why they are the ones who went to the WhiteHouse & Congress begging for "Nickels & Dimes!"...LMAO!!!

they both sucked wind for december, but honda did very well for the full year...half the decline of toyota.

No surprise. Toyota has roughly twice the product line as Honda. What do you expect? Hello GM, FORD and Chrysler!!!!!!!!

If the incentives are the reason's that the Big 3 are doing so well then why aren't Toyota and Honda upping their incentives. Lets face it compared to GM, Chrysler, and Ford Honda and Toyota are ROLLING in dough.

Honestly the situation is very different at Toyota and Honda than any of the Big 3 and it comes down to corporate philosophy and structure. The Big 3 NEED to move metal or their fixed costs will eat them alive. Toyota and Honda on the other hand can afford to cut production to meet lowered demand while maintaining profitability. And HOPEFULLY the domestic manufacturers can see this and adjust their plans for the future accordingly.

You know Huu, none of these haters are open minded enough to consider the validity of your post. Very well put.

dear huu:

have you not seen the incredibly annoying "saved by zero" commercials that toyota runs every 3 minutes? so despite MASSIVE advertising AND MASSIVE incentives, they still sucked wind. please explain.

It is interesting. I praise Toyota and Honda for a properly organized corporate structure and explain why their method is better than the Big 3 and yet the Toyota nuts still deboost me.

Perhaps you guys should read more before you click the little down arrow.

interestingly however, U.S. built camrys sold some 10,100 units MORE in 2008 than in 2007!

while everyone else is slowing or even stopping production, those plants cranking out camrys are still humming along!

Toyota and Honda don't have near the inventory the domestics do. And when you've got 2009 and 2010(ha ha) you gotta move some scrap iron. Hence 0% of 72, 84 and even 96 mos.

there is no validity to this point, because toyota (NOT honda) is running the exact same incentives and is spending way more on advertising than the big 3.

Hey enthusiast, If you really want to hate on Huu with a valid arguement, why don't you just bring up the fact that for the last quarter of 2008 Toyota and Honda were still in the leasing business, while the big three weren't. You'd sound a whole lot more intelligent.
