STUD OR DUD? Buick Drops Details On The 2010 Lacrosse Ahead Of Detroit Auto Show
Redesigned from the ground up, the 2010 Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan makes its world debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 12. The LaCrosse offers all wheel drive, a suite of advanced intelligent personal technologies and safety features, and a choice of two fuel-saving V-6 engines.

“The new LaCrosse was created with great attention to detail, craftsmanship and advanced technology,” said Susan Docherty, Buick-Pontiac-GMC vice president. “It builds on the success of Enclave as the next step in Buick’s revitalization. And, as with Enclave, our goal is to attract a whole new buyer to our dealerships for LaCrosse.”

Sculpted design

Buick’s long heritage of leading designs, such as the Y-Job Concept, the Roadmaster and the Riviera, helped define American automobile design through the years, according to Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. Today, Buick design is a product of a global team and resources. Creative collaboration between designers in the United States and China, in partnership with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) as well as chassis and body engineers in Europe, resulted in the first General Motors vehicle to be created on three continents.

“The new LaCrosse is intended to represent modern elegance,” said Welburn. “Throughout the design, you experience a balance of contrasts. Both the interior and exterior have been designed with harmony in mind. The exterior balances taut, sculpted lines with sensuous accents and surfaces. Inside, smoked chrome accents, warm wood, first-class leather and materials combine with cool blue ambient lighting to create an inviting environment.”

The exterior design is faithful to the Buick Invicta show car introduced at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show.

“It is instantly recognizable as a Buick, with its signature ‘sweep spear’ body-side styling, portholes inside the character line on the hood, and waterfall grille,” added Welburn.

Luxurious interior experience

Inside, the two-tone interior is defined by a flowing, uninterrupted design theme that wraps around the instrument and door panels. Attention to detail is evident throughout the interior, including the analog instrument cluster, chrome offset by dark wood accents, and the contrasting thread and French stitching on the instrument panel.

Buick’s signature QuietTuning – an engineering process to reduce, block and absorb interior noise – provides a distraction-free passenger environment.

An unexpected, inviting touch is the cool blue ambient lighting throughout the cabin from the center console, instrument panel and door panels.

Intelligent personal technologies

The contemporary atmosphere of the cabin includes the digital connectivity and personal technology offered in the new LaCrosse. That includes features such as in-dash navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, an auxiliary audio input and a USB port. For rear-seat passengers, a power rear-window sunshade and a DVD entertainment system, with two display screens integrated into the seatbacks, is available.

LaCrosse’s intelligent technologies also work to deliver a 360-degree field of vision behind the steering wheel, for a greater feeling of comfort, security and safety. It starts with the available head-up display in the windshield, allowing the driver to monitor speed while keeping his or her eyes on the road. At night, the available adaptive lighting package can direct the high-intensity discharge headlight beams up to 15 degrees for enhanced illumination of the road and its curves.

LaCrosse offers Side Blind Zone alert that notifies the driver if a vehicle in adjacent lanes is traveling in the driver’s blind spot. The LaCrosse is also available with a rear view camera, with the display integrated into the navigation system screen.

The technology available on LaCrosse enhances a suite of standard safety features that is designed to meet the criteria for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 20 Star Safety Rating. Highlights include front-, side- and roof-mounted head-curtain air bags, StabiliTrak stability- and traction-control system. The safety and security of OnStar is also included for the first year of ownership.

Responsive performance

LaCrosse’s stiff body structure serves as the foundation for precise suspension tuning, safety and a quiet ride. Buyers can choose from a family of efficient, direct-injection six-cylinder engines and a fuel-conserving six-speed automatic transmission with tap-up/tap-down control.

The direct injection engines in the LaCrosse create more power with less fuel and reduce vehicle emissions through greater combustion control – particularly cold-start emissions that are reduced by up to 25 percent.

The 2010 LaCrosse will be offered in three models - CX, CXL and CXS:

  • CX – equipped with a new 3.0L direct injection V-6, premium cloth seats and 17-inch wheels. The 3.0L engine generates an estimated 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 211 lb.-ft. of torque (286 Nm) and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
  • CXL – also equipped with the new 3.0L direct injection V-6, adds leather-appointed heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lamps, outside rearview mirror with LED turn indicators and puddle lamps, and 18-inch wheels. Intelligent AWD is available.
  • CXS – equipped with a 3.6L direct injection V-6; real-time active-dampening suspension; perforated, leather-appointed, heated and cooled seats, and chrome-plated 18-inch wheels (19-inch optional). The 3.6L engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, generates an estimated 280 horsepower (209 kW) and 261 lb.-ft. of torque (354 Nm).

LaCrosse production will begin this summer at the Fairfax Assembly facility in Kansas City, Kan.

That is a good looking car, and what a great interior.

I think this could give the Lexus ES a run for the money.

Good looking and great interior - hell must be freezing over. Who would have ever thought those phrases would go together in regards to a Buick?

I'm not sure how you can single out the ES bro, this car will give everything in the luxury and near luxury segment a run for it's money. If GM sells this car enmass to the rental car companies, you can kiss all that hard work good bye. This car is a STUD!

This is a great looking Buick. And with their quality levels at or near the top every year, entry level luxury buyers would be stupid not to consider this. I think I may have to visit the Buick show floor for the first time ever when I go to the auto show next month.

Too bad when the UAW labor expenses have to be factored into the building cost, the price will not be competitive at all. Which means in order to keep paying legacy UAW pension and labor contract obligation the final GM product will have to compromise at the materials level and end up contain all kinds of low quality plastics and cheep engine components.

I think GM has potential, but they will need to first close all the Michigan plants and do like Toyota and BMW and build non UAW plans in the south in order to be able to put out an affordable quality product.

What you guys fail to see, is that designs are just the beginning of GMs problems, regardless of how good or impressive the design and concept cars are, they simply just can't build them all at that level of quality because of the ridiculous UAW retired pension and labor cost obligation.

Unless they get rid of the UAW, they should consider selling these designs and research to Toyota, Honda or Nissan to build as a Lexus, Accura or Infinity. Only then it might be a more profitable venture and more attractive product in the market place..

It's a great design, but GM simply can't build this car in the US with the UAW. Maybe if one of their foreign non union division built and imported it back to the US, it could be a great success.

This car will never see the light of day as it appears.. if it does, rest assured once you've had a chance to do a close inspection at the dealership you will notice some horrible quality plastic components courtesy of the UAW expenses that had to be covered as part of the building cost..

Simply said.. Demolish the UAW to save GM..

Well I would disagree with your statement. Look at the interior of the Enclave, Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS. The interiors are good or in some causes better that most. GM has made an outstanding effort in the last 3 years in revamping the interior of their vehicles.

This logic doesn't work. The average target for Buick would be larger families that need transportation, with luxury in their sights. The Enclave and La Cross are vehicles larger that the CTS/ SRX and cost less than both. Totally different demographics. The Buick owner would possibly look at Acura MDX, Lexus GX, Subaru Tribeca, Lincoln up coming MR-T. The La Cross to target like you said, the Lexus GS/ES, Acura TL, and Lincoln MK-Z, MR-S. As you can see, mid level luxury is Buick' s focus.

Chuck that didn't work with Oldsmobile so why would it work with Buick? The buyers don't stay in the "GM fold" like GM thought they would. They move on to other brands.

WOW. Very nice car. GM is really differentiating this car from Chevy. Smart move!

Surely Buick could have made the whole dash woodgrain. The wood strips cheapen the look as if they had limited supplies to work with. I don't like a half built car. Seems only the Jag customers get a full dash anymore. It can't cost that much to build the whole dash of woodgrain.

The outside does look a bit like the New Lincoln 2009 MKS.

Mercury could learn some lessons from Buick in widening the gap between brands.

Looks like a Lexus ES/LS and they went for the wrap around tail lamp look of the 2010 Mercedes E-Class. Nice design, but it doesn't know what it wants to be halfway through the body. The lines are in conflict with each other. The interior is cool looking, but very impractical. GM has a way of going overboard on their designs. Also, if I had to bet, GM will ruin in with cheap plastics on the dash and low quality leather. This is a STUD, but it will be a DUD within a year of coming out.

-1UAW - I was in a Chevy Malibu and Impala recently. I drove a Cadillac STS Seville as a rental for a week. The Impala's dash is made of that cheap tupperware plastic. The Malibu interior is too over the top. It does not have a timeless style to it. The Cadillac's leather is not up to Lexus or Mercedes quality and the feel of the hardware is still a notch below the competitors. Plus, I can spot that cheap GM Delco hardware miles away. You UAW supporters, get your head out of your ass. Until they wipe out your pensions, quit giving retirees healthcare, and pay you for playing cards, the BIG3 will have to cut corners and still make POS cars.

This is fantastic. The Chevy Malibu is a great looker and this is even better. Lexus better start to look over their sholder. I have rented a number of new 2008 and 2009 Malibus with V6 and six-speed and they are an excellent value. Moreover, the over pricing of Toyota and Lexus is going to blindside them.

Interestingly, I just rented a 2009 V6 Mazda 6 and other then it was a good looking car the structure and performance was far below the Malibu. This all should be good news for the new Buick as long as GM keeps-up the good build qualit I have seen on the new Malibu.

What's all the excitement about? Is that the best GM can do? It cribs shamelessly from the 5 & 3 Series, Lexus, Infiniti, et al. But mostly from BMW, as does the Pontiac G8 and the new Lincolns, years after the originals established the paradigm. Everything about it is derivative of something else. It's like the middle manager dweeb who arrives at the office one day with new threads and haircut and thinks he's suddenly with it.

Definitely a stud. Finally, GM is getting away from the long snout look that dominated the look for there FWD cars for so many years. There is only so much that can be done when your still using a transverse mount design with a V motor. But this one looks great. I really like the vents on the top of the hood, it just works. Add the elegant tail, and cool ambient lighting. Great job GM. Just price it right from the start. It worked for the Enclave, it will work for LaCrosse. I'm sorry to say, but for a while to come; this is one area where the domestics will have to be better; price. There reputations have been so maligned by the moronic 'daily press' and TV sNews over recent bail out-issue,(combined with bad reps they had before this issue;(undeserved in many ways) that getting people to come back will have to be based on price (& quality: perceived value). Once, and if, they can prove they are as good, if not better, than the competition, they can then raise there prices higher and people will still come. This is what Hyundai did. The question is, can and will GM be able to do it?

thstonethstone - 1/12/2009 5:31:31 PM

Awesome looking car with very nice powerplants. I expect the downside to be that the price will be way too high which will severely dampen initial sales. Then they'll offer incentives to generate sales and ruin the car's value as they lose money on every car sold. Been there and done that. What's going to be different this time? Listen to me, Buick - you are not BMW or MB or Lexus or even Acura. No one under 70 yrs old even pays attention to your cars. Price it aggressively to sell against Camry's in a crappy car market from Day 1 and you'll have a winner.
