In some pictures I see the shift lever on the console or next to the steering wheel....5 and 7 speed?

yeah, I'm seeing the same thing! I like the presence of a real shifter on the console, but if the shifter a la S-class/M/GL/R has to be next to the steering wheel, that's ok for me. It's interesting because 3 of the console shifters are AUTOMATICS I think, and there's one pic that has the shifter look distinctly manual with the gear map on the top.
hm.............do they still make the 5 speed automatic for any Mercedes other than the S600/SL65 AMG etc? Or is this only in Europe?

I guess they do make a 5-spd in Europe

The interior photos with the manual transmission are for entry-level E-Classes. Higher-spec models which are only available in automatic probably have the OPTION of having a center console transmission or a column shift. This is just like Mercedes in the old days. On cars like the W114/W115 and W123 buyers had the option of either a column- or floor shift when it came to the manual and later automatic transmissions.

Never heard of E250 before. This petrol engine engine seems all new unit. I think 180, 200, 220, 230 petrol engines are really underpowered for an E class. E250 as entry level is much better.

"I think 180, 200, 220, 230 petrol engines are really underpowered for an E class."

They're not. The E200 Kompressor with a 1.8-l supercharged 4-cylinder and 163-horsepower was actually very zippy. It could reach 100 km/h in under 10 seconds which is always a good time. The E200 CDI was probably the slowest E-Class taking about 11 seconds to reach 100 km/h but that's irrelevant since most of them are used as taxis and performance isn't important in that job. The E220 CDI was the bestseller E-Class in Europe and it is far from slow. I've driven that car so often, new and old, and it's quick.

These greyscale images of the e-class are great. They really show the new lines off well. Mercedes design language appears to be headed towards a more classic 70-80s look with the pronounced edges and angles. It's not in the photos, but I am disappointed that they left the large clock to the left of the speedometer. Why does it have to be so big? In the older Mercedes the VDO gauge cluster had three circles. A tach, a speedo, and a third circle which had a clock, and two other indicators (can't remember - fuel gauge and battery?).

The interior looks very classy and expensive.

At first, I wasn't really "feeling" this design but the more I see it, the more I understand what Mercedes is up to. It has a classic, yet avante-garde feel.

So I'm out of the loops with this...can someone tell me if the difference between the two models (with daylight leds/ double fog lights) is because of they are different models or because of a separate option/package.

RNeekChic - You see differences because in Europe, Mercedes typically sells three trim levels for their cars - Classic, Avante Guarde, and Elegance. I have seen it for the A, B, C and E Class, but don't recall this applying to the S-Class. The stuff they ship to the US seems to resemble the Elegance versions, except without the badging on the interior.
