New E-Class, Bluetec Zero and Stirling Moss SLR Roll Early Before Detroit Show
Mercedes-Benz started off the new year right with the early launch of the next E-class (looks much nicer in person than in studio photos), the Bluetec Zero Electric Concept and the special edition Stirling Moss SLR.

The Spies were at the pre-launch party and have these photos live in our 2009 Detroit auto show photo gallery and running live in our new photo ticker

Oh yeah, there are lots of luxury cars being used as taxis. I've even seen your precious JAGUAR S-Type and X-Type being used as one.

I totally agree. The rear end is so Japanese to me the tail lights look Toyotaesque.

I love the new E class also. I hope all those who were calling it ugly are looking at it now. Its another home run for mercedes. way to go!!!

I'm still disappointed in this new E-Class. It's too Asian-looking. I mean I like Asian styling, but on Asian cars, not German ones. And especially German ones as important as the E-Class. This looks like a larger C-Class inside and out. I would have liked for it to resemble a smaller S/CL-Class.

I would like to hear from a world-renowned design expert like you how exactly this car is "Asian"? Please, let's hear a well-thought out explanation and not some mindless troll BS.

I am no "world-renowned design expert," just a mere POTENTIAL BUYER of a mid-size luxury car. I know what I like, and I know what I see, and I do not like what I see when I look at the new E-Class.

You still have not answered my question. What looks so "Asian" about it? Let's hear some facts. The design looks very Germanic / Teutonic. Very simplistic (conservative) and subtly elegant. This is a successful formula, did you know that? Not everyone wants a car that says "Look at me!".

AnthonyAnthony - 1/11/2009 8:27:53 PM

Simplistic and elegant is "Germanic" I agree. This car is not. There are too many "layers" of sheet metal towards the front of the car, the side profile has a more creased character line than normal. The rear is too flat and does not match the rest of the car, and the front-end looks like a cartoon character. These are all "Asian" traits. And let's not kid ourselves: This car was probably designed somewhere in Asia. The new chief of design at Mercedes, Gorden Wagener, was formerly in charge of the Mercedes design studio in... Japan. They just hired an ex-Hyundai designer to join their team as well.

Regardless, I held out on buying a new Jaguar XF to see what the new E-Class would look like. I think I'll go for the Jag.

The design obviously doesn't appeal to you. I personally find it very attractive because I can see the total resemblance to the W211 E-Class and perhaps even E-Classes of the past. There's a design language in that car that a Mercedes fan like me can understand and appreciate. :-)
