Jaguar XFR is fastest big cat yet 225 MPH!

Jan 12 2009 By Alun Thorne, Head of Business

Jaguar has secured its position at the cutting edge of automotive design with the unveiling of its fastest-ever car.

The Jaguar XFR took the accolade after topping 225mph at a recent speed trial at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah - comfortably beating Jaguar’s previous speed record of 217.1, mph set in the XJ220 back in 1992.

With 75,000 workers in the United Kingdom anxiously awaiting news of a vital multi-million pound government loan to help JLR tough out the recession, the launch of the new model at the Detroit Motor Show will provide more evidence that the Warwickshire-based carmaker leads the world in engine technology and deserves the support of the government to help it get through the current credit crunch.

Jaguar Land Rover invests hundreds of millions of pounds annually in its research and development facilities at Whitley in Coventry and at Gaydon in Warwickshire - the seventh-largest R&D spend of any UK company - and it is this that industry watchers believe will persuade the government to offer a financial lifeline to the Indian-owned company.

Jaguar programmes director Mick Mohan hailed the XFR as the “ultimate Jaguar sports saloon” and said that it was the perfect showcase for the group’s cutting-edge design capabilities.

“This is the most technologically-advanced, fastest Jaguar we have ever produced - it’s a big statement of our capabilities,” he said. “This will be our to-of-the-range vehicle - these are cars competing with the best in terms of capacity, technology and performance.”

The XFR, which accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, will take pride of place at the top of the XF range, a model which has sold around 42,000 vehicles since its launch last spring and has provided the momentum behind Jaguar’s recent buoyant performance, clocking up overall sales across all models of more than 65,000 cars last year.

“We have been delighted with the way the car has been received. At the last count, it had 29 global awards,” added Mr Mohan. “We are the only manufacturer in our sector in the UK with sales up for 2007. This signifies what Jaguar saloons will look like in the future - the XF is a global success story.”

Last week The Post, backed by four other leading regional newspapers, launched a campaign calling on the government to support JLR as its failure would be catastrophic, with 16,000 jobs directly affected and at least another 60,000 in the supply chain.

In an interview with The Post, Prime Minister Gordon Brown admitted that the government was in talks with JLR owner Tata but said there were issues to be resolved and that “first responsibility” lay with the Indian conglomerate.

Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, head of Warwick Manufacturing Group, who has close connections with the JLR parent group, welcomed the fact that talks were continuing. He said: “The mood has changed. Negotiations are taking place on the basis of respect for each other’s position. It is good to see that the government is moving in the right direction. Hopefully, a solution will be found by the end of the month.

“Nobody is asking for a bail-out and rightly so. The government has to be careful but we need to look after sustainable companies which are the future of this country.”

Wow that's quick!!!

It's a sexy looking car, but the front kit could have looked more aggressive.

A very poor article. The writer spent more time talking about Jaguar-Land Rover politics than about the actual car and the speed run.

Well, not necessarily although I shared your doubt at the beginning too. I found that someone topped current E60 M5 at 330 kph/205mph. It might be that the supercharged V8 in this Jag is slightly underrated with its 510HP, it might be that the Jag has slightly better aerodynamics and it might be it's slightly lighter. Then all those factors, when added up, with a bit of the tail wind, could make the Jag go that fast.

Well yes it is a standard XFR. All they did was add a small spoiler to keep the rear tires glued down. They remmapped the ECU and took off the limiter. The remmapping allowed the motor to run at full potential. 600HP. And yes the car got to 225 mph without wind or any other assitance. by the way we will eventually have a 600 hp version of one or both of these cars the XKR and the XFR.

310 kph? I hope it was in somewhat controlled conditions.... And regarding the speed, was it the speedometer reading? Since as you know for sure, speedometers underrate their readings a little, partially to protect reckless drivers from fines and to somewhat increase safety. Maybe you hit some headwind as well.

The XFR has a better coefficient of drag than the XK does.

I got to about 310km/hr too in my M5 on a newly built road here in the UAE because it had no radars or anything. Not even street lamps! But I'm sure that it can get to up to 325km/hr if it has enough road ahead. 330km/hr? Not impossible, but very hard!

Oh, is that all they did? Add aero pieces and then fiddle with the computer to add 100hp? Well yeah, that's totally the "standard" version of the car then. Totally.

The Jaguar dealership in my town has a ton of XF's sitting on the lot. I've gotten several mailers offering 0% financing on them already (surprising for such a new model). While it looks great, I just can't ever see why you would buy this over an E350 or 535i.

maybe you should drive one, they are selling pretty well here in NC. In all honesty it has a better interior than both of the 2 cars, the dynamics are alot better than the e class, and while not as sporty as the 5 series, its performance/luxury compromise are outstanding and unlike any of the cars in the segment, it really is a great car. There problem is no powerful 6 cylinder to compete with the 535i, which Im sure they were going foranyway, but a twin turbo 6 Im sure what solvethat problem to replace the ancient v8

"Dumb dumb dumb comment"
Before declaring me an idiot jagexpert (expert wouldn't be too accurate), do some research. While many manufacturers ARE offering 0%, several luxury divisions are not. For example:

2.9% on most 09 BMW's (3.9% on the 1): http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/FinancialServices/FinancingOffer/Default.aspx?enc=lTh/OtFZJYyyyRi1sAj9Rg==

0.9% to 2.9% on 09 Audi's.
http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/special_offers.html

That would not be "everyone."

Actually the Jaguar XF was rated as having better driving dynamics than the BMW 5-Series in one of the last Autobild or Auto Motor und Sport reviews from a few months ago. The only real downside to the XF was its poor comfort. The E-Class is apparently still the most comfortable car in this class followed by the A6, 5er and then the XF.

HSCCenterconsole,

well just to be clear the XF Luxury is going for 0% the XF Premium Luxury is goiing for 2.9% a nd the XF Supercharged is going for market rates. As are all other Jaguars. Just so you know BMW for years has been buying down its leases to ridiculous levels. When you can lease a 90K 750li for $999.00 its because they can't sell. them and have a terrible glut of car. BMW wrote of several BILLION dollars worth of bad leases last quarter and is off over 35% for 2008. They have an unsustainable situation. So you have no reason to feel superior.
The only car they sell in numbers is the 3 Series which is 75% of their sales. So you do the homework next time. By the way in 2008 jaguar actually sold 8% more cars world wide even with the credit crunch.

Jagexpert, I think the fumes from your X-type are getting to you.

I'm not trying to act superior. You called my comments "dumb dumb dumb" and YOU STATED that EVERYBODY was doing 0% financing. I corrected your inaccurate comment by giving two examples (Audi & BMW) of Jaguar competitors not doing 0% financing. Also, the reason why there are such great deals on E65/6 7-Series is that they are going to be replaced in several months by the all new 7.

@wimmer actually read my comment lol, I hate when people repeat what I say in a comment, or simply erad part and just go off on the handle. The 5 series in every mag has been said is the sportiest car in its segment, there is no questioning that, but the Xf like I said has a performance/luxury combination unlike any car, it blends both very well, and better than the other carsin the segment. I havent read a review that said it wasnt comfortable at all. My big issues with the XF though in all honesty is that it makes the rest of the lineup look irrelevant it has the best interior by FAR, gets better reviews, same engines, similar suspension to the XK and good looks. Why would you even waste the money on the XK or XJ unless you have to have one, or just cant get pass the looks. They really need to step the rest of the line up, when the "cheapest car" in a line up out does the rest of the line that is thousands and almost twicein some cases more expensive there is a problem

Love this car. I've never been a Jag fan, but this car is sexy. Several people mentioned that they would buy the E class instead...why, the E is soooooooo boring now..it looks like a grandmothers/grandfathers car.

At this momment the XF is the most modern and atractive sedan on this category talking about style. (I am fan of german cars but, it is imposible to eclipse the sun with finger).

fair enough. I was inaccurate. However as a Jaguar professional i will say that BMW has been selling the 7 series at deep discount and highly subvented leases for 4-5 yrs. now. But that neither here nor there. They all build great cars and are all doing what they have to do to keep sales up in a tough perios.
