Edmunds - The Overrated List of 2008

Edmunds - The Overrated List of 2008
This semi-regular column is written (in his own blood) by an automotive sage and noted malcontent, known as The Mechanic. Mercilessly beaten as a child with rolled-up back issues of old car magazines, our free-spoken hero developed a unique "for your own good" take on cars and the auto industry, along with an unfortunate habit of setting himself ablaze. Later, after a distinguished career as an automotive journalist and magazine editor, he cast off the reins of his musty oppressors, carved out his superego with a plastic spork and became The Mechanic.

Two weeks ago I wrote about the importance of being optimistic in these troubled times. And I stand behind the sentiment contained within those wonderfully crafted 690 words. But don't misunderstand, optimism should be also be selectively doled out.

Sure the future looks bright, but not everything is great. In fact, during the inescapable 24 hour news cycle, many things get overrated. Too many things. And since I like the sound of my own thoughts I thought I'd make a list of those things.

I expect many of you to disagree with me on many of these, but remember, if you do, you're wrong.

Nissan GT-R
"Too noisy. Too rough. Too fragile. Better not use the launch control"
Sounds like the BMW M3 to me. Strange how there are no European cars listed, although there are plenty that belong here.

Other than the Jaguar, which shouldn't be on the list.

While I don't think either of them are noisy or rough (judging from reviews), the M3 is MUCH more refined as an everyday driver than the GT-R. It's more of a luxury GT that happens to have amazing handling, whereas it used to be a sports car disguised as a luxury coupe. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize this.

The sad thing is that you claim to be against senseless haters (Lexus haters), but you are a hater yourself. You have no common sense.

You know, just another Porsche fanboy.
"Too noisy" and "too rough"? I think he's never driven a Ferrari.

"Too noisy. Too rough"? I guess he never had a Ferrari before.

"Miles Per Gallon
In case you haven't noticed (and nobody has) gas is really cheap again."

Dumb.

Overall a very good and competent list. But should he have added Edmunds itself?

Seriously, this guy's an idiot. There are almost as many factual errors in this list as are their erros in judgment: 1) Chip Foose
Enough with the two-tone and the billit. Talk about a one note somba. Time to overhaul your esthetic.... Hint: the word is Aesthetic. 2) Saturn Aura -So much better than the embarrassing Ion it replaced this average sedan was destined for overrated status. Hint: The Aura replaced the Saturn L-Series, not the Ion... What A Moron, and a Biased One At That!

Hmmm... What's up with Infiniti these days? I haven't seen any new news about them lately. I guess with only one model; G37, keeping them on the map theres not much to talk about. Talk about boring and uninspiring.

The Dodge Challenger SRT-8
Dude, nice Camaro!

Chip Foose
And all of the rest of the custom car builders. Boring.

2009 Nissan GT-R
A super car for the Wii generation. I'll take a Ferrari. Any Ferrari.

Piloti Driving Shoes
Piloti posers.

The Toyota Prius
Tin can POS.

The Tesla
Battery powered Lotus Elise. Why?

Small SUVs
Small utes I can understand. Luxury small utes I can't.

2009 Lincoln MKS
And every other car Lincoln sells.

Speed Channel
Too much "drama", not enough speed.

2010 Ford Mustang
At least it doesn't look like a Challenger/Camaro.

Sync
C'mon. Its from Microsoft. You didn't really think it would work, did you?

Saturn Aura
Anybody want to buy a car division from GM? Cheap.

Top Gear
Best show on TV.

Lexus IS-F
Lexus I-Should've-Found a way to buy the BMW.

Honda Civic Si
Who cares? Its a Civic.

2009 Jaguar XF
Good try, but no cigar.

2009 Chevy Corvette
You forgot to add the words "for the money". That is the only way to justify a Corvette purchase.

Me
Me too.

Bob Lutz
Mr. Car Guy busy selling off car divisions. Kind of sad. But deserved.

Miles Per Gallon
Only matters when the price goes above $4 per gallon. Otherwise irrelevant. Car makers - the $25,000,000,000 question is what are gas prices going to do 2009 - 2011? Its time to place your bets.

How is the Lexus IS-F overrated when it hit DEAD LAST in every comparison test?

This guy hates Japan - he must have an autospies account...maybe he's 009...you never know.

Finally someone is honest about the Nissan GTR. Don't use launch control, don't dare burn out the clutch or it will cost you 20 grand, and if you believe a stock one ran a 7:29 at the Ring (Driver's Republic and Von Sarma don't) then I have some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell you. And I DO live in Florida.
