Vw BlueSport Roadster coming in 2012
A chief engineer for VW has revealed that a mid-engined BlueSport Roadster, aimed to compete with machines in the class of Mazda MX-5 and the Lotus Elise and assembled from a combination of customized and production parts, is just three years away from production.

The production components come from Volkswagen’s latest transverse, front-engined MQB platform which is due in 2012. The parts will only be available by then and the BlueSport has to wait, although it is currently in the production-ready stage.

Hoo Ray! The return of a (hopefully) affordable mid-engine sports car.

I think this is a good move for them. The Miata did wonders for bringing new blood into Mazda showrooms and this may do the same for VW.

I am really curious to see how you would better upon the arches.

Why? They look like the R8's, which look fantastic.

Yeah, I think you're off-base with this one. The R8-inspired wheel arches are executed very cleanly.

come on, it's the face of Fast from the GTI commercials.

Very cool concept from both aesthetic and engineering standpoints, but... One has to wonder about whether VW will overprice this vehicle to the point of completely missing its target audience. - We'll See?

I'm sorry...when did the Miata become part of the same class as the Lotus Elise???

Regardless, I am glad to hear this news and can't wait to see this in person.

The Mazda Miata is the best selling sport roadster in the world. Maybe that was what he meant by it being a "class leader!" But you can't compare a Miata to a Lotus Elise.

"bluesport", they're trying really hard to make a manly convertible. this might work.

That's what I want to see: If VW can produce a "manly," convertible -- for the first time.

I think VW hit the nail on this one. Nice design. Why 2012? Why not now so it can knock off that Mazda Miata.

Great, build a coupe version and I'll buy it.

DE-lighted! Bring it on! This would _finally_ be the first fun car with a diesel in the US. (I don't count the Jetta (too humdrum), I don't count the new 3-series diesel (since, unfortunately, I find it ugly and lacking class), and, of course, I don't count the (yawn) E-series.) A fun, mid-engine, affordable, diesel, convertible? You'd think someone's beginning to think out of the box they've kept us locked up in for too long in the US!
