Honda F1 team to use Mercedes-Benz engines
Although hopes were high that Honda will be receiving engines from Ferrari for their beleaguered F1 team, Ferrari’s Stefano, Domenicali dashed whatever hope remaining with a revelation that the chance of a deal with Honda, previously attempted by team boss Ross Brawn, is actually close to nil.

As a result, it now seems that Mercedes-Benz will be the most likely engine provider for the Brackley based F1 team currently known as Honda.

But there is no buyer yet so there may be no need for an engine right?

Interesting, and frankly, I am surprised! It appears that Honda/Toyota are great at building solid consumer vehicles, but when it comes to cutting edge performance/technology, Ferrari IS DA BOMB! Way to go Big Red.

F1 is the flagship for speed technology, and it truly separates the best from the rest.

I would rather say Ilmor - British formula one engine manufacturer bought by Mercedes to design and construct engines for formula one under Mercedes logo, Mercedes refinanced and renamed the company. Shrewd marketing: --http://atlasf1.autosport.com/2001/jan03/tytler.html-- http://www.mercedes-benz-hpe.com/hpe/index.htm Honda has used its know how in performance engines engineering and build its own engines and dominated together with McLaren from 1986 to 1991.

"Although Mercedes is stamped on the engine covers, they are in fact manufactured in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, England by Ilmor Engineering Limited." --http://atlasf1.autosport.com/2001/jan03/tytler.html--

"When they were both competing in F1 at the same time - definitely Mercedes." Has Mercedes been designing any engines in F1 since 1955?

And earlier Honda increased their F1 engine budget and kicked Porsche (sponsored by TAG group) butt in 1986.

What What What!!!!!!!?????? Why not just give up F1? What is the purpose of using a Mercedes engine when the objective was to develop engines in F1, the tech to be used in road cars. Maybe Honda wants to disect and Merc engine for research?

The identity can be broken down into 2 categories, constructor and manufacturer of the engine. For example Force India Ferrari was their own constructor, they made(supplied) the car and Ferrari manufactured the engine. In 2009 they will be Force India Mercedes.
In response to Mikey's comment, Honda have only supplied 1 other team in recent F1.... The now defunkt Super Aguri team. The only other manufacturers supplying engines are Toyota(Williams), Renault(Red Bull), Ferrari(Scuderia Toro Rosso) and the above mentioned Force India.
