Bet You Can't Guess Who Had The Hottest Cars In December?
While December sales for many makers were down over 25%, there were some bright spots in the industry.  Some dealers actually had a hard time keeping cars on the lot!

You might be surprised to know the Agent001 correctly pegged that BMW's X6 would be a run away hit, and December's figures are now backing him up.

According to JD Power the fastest moving car moving off the lot in December was the BMW X6.  Who would have thought?

Agent001 did!

Everyone in the press has dissed the X6 and said it wouldn't sell, but this certainly shows now, who really knows what will be hot and won't.

Here are the fastest movers in December:

17 Days Average On Lot BMW X6
19 Days Average On Lot Honda Fit
20 Days Average On Lot Mini Cooper
21 Days Average On Lot Toyota Prius
24 Days Average On Lot Audi A5/S5
26 Days Average On Lot Dodge Challenger
38 Days Average On Lot Scion xD
38 Days Average On Lot Subaru Forester
39 Days Average On Lot Honda Civic
39 Days Average On Lot Lincoln MKS
39 Days Average On Lot Toyota Corolla

Shortage of vehicles like the A5 and X6 more likely to explain the short lot time.

I agree with you on the A5, can never find one at the dealers around me, but not sure about the X6.

if BMW can deliever 5 thousand X5 in a month, it sure can produce more than 432 X6 in a month. I highly doubt this shortage is due to high demand. this is more like BMW knows it cannot sell many X6 so it try to not produce any.

ghosthunter, that's the point. Look, is the A5/S5 sold out in the U.S.? It is, right? Everyone agrees there, it's a "hot car", right? No one questions the A5/S5? Well guess what, they sell the same numbers of those as BMW does X6's. Could Audi sell more of them? Sure. Could BMW sell more X6's? Sure. But supplies are kept low so they maintain their exclusivity and sold out status. Why wouldn't they?

What you guys don't seem to grasp is today's market is WAY more into the fashion statement than ever before.

And the X6 is a FASHION statement.

And a damn good one at that.

You CANNOT believe the response you get driving one...never had an SUV that has generated such a positive response on the road.

Stick with us.

We'll show you were the trend is going first.

Not having many on the road is why there is some interest to people. I have seen a few around town, and I would agree that I take a second look, but it doesn't exactly stir that much emotion.

X6 is limited production.. if you want one you order..When it arrives promptly is delivered..

My local Dealer has a Black/black 5.0i which had been sitting there for over 3 months. BMW knew it was going to be a low volume seller and adjusted prodcution numebrs AND PRICE to make it "sold out" and profitable..cannot blame them..

As usual.. one can "play the numbers" to support a point. Read between the lines to get a better "feel" for the truth.

Correlate the "DAYS ON THE LOT" with production numbers for a better indication of "what is a hit" . Also have to exclude those "moved to demo service" as the local dealer like to do with his Porsche Inventory:

C4S Targa: "Recently Been Put Into Demo Service But Has Not Yet Been Driven. Tremendous Savings. Warranty Has Not Yet Started."

And the Diesel X5... NO SELL there.. Why Pay $3000 more on purchase and then MORE at the pump. BMW got it wrong here.. Right vehicle WRONG price.

sorry but while I'd maybe agree if you had said BMW got it wrong with the 335d, you're totally off base on the X5 35d. Why? Because you're comparing it to the six cylinder X5 when you SHOULD be comparing it to the V8 X5. The X5 35d is as quick as the X5 V8. It gets a 65% increase in fuel economy versus the V8. It costs $5000 LESS than the V8 X5. And even though the fuel costs $0.20 more per gallon, with 15k miles/yr you're saving $800/yr in gas. It'll also have better resale value than either other X5 model.

So basically what you're getting is X5 V8 performance for $5000 less up front plus $4000 in gas savings over five years plus better resale value. Hmmm. Explain to me again how BMW got it wrong?

The corolla!?! Maybe Lexus is on to something with its new corolla based HS.

The new HS250 is based more on the Toyota Avensis than a Corolla.

The X6 doesn't look sporty at all it looks heavy and slow with a big back. Each year the design of the FX proves to be a successful one.

You could say a lot of things about the X6, but you cannot say it isn't sporty, and you certainly can't say it's slow. With the turbo six it has gone from 0-60 in under 6 seconds, and with the turbo V8 it has gotten at least five flat if not quicker. Judging from the reviews the handling is also nothing short of sensational.

In other words, the only luxury cars for under $100K that are more satisfying to drive are BMW's sedans.

The X6 could never have been a volume car, and BMW knows it. So they price it high, keep production low so they don't have to discount the ones that don't sell. We see the days on the lot, but what we don't see in the equation here is whether or not the profit margin is hight enough to justify the existence at low volumes. I imagine it is.

The current trend driving an X6 is sure path to the body shop...you can't see out the back window at all, which you really need to do sometimes while driving forward so the back-up camera won't help.

I like how an article was posted showing the source of the information and people still do not believe it! People on here are funny and narrowminded. Cant you people progress? I like the X6 because it is different. I know 2 people that have one and they really enjoy it. they say people ask them all the time what kind of car it is (for some reason people cant read) and those people really like it.
people, there is a reason there is more than one vehicle made in the markets, everyone has different tastes! deal with it...

i have an x6... got it in sept. until the other day, i had not seen another one on the road. so now... there are 3 in kansas city. i personally like having a car that not every other person on the planet has. you can keep your lexus/toyota and audi/vw.

just because there is a shortage, does not mean there is a demand for the vehicle. Toyota doesnt produce a lot of land cruisers and they sit on the lots.

24 days on the A5?? They are never on the lot - each and everyone that arrives at my dealer is spoken for. So that means zero days.
