Hyundai Finally Gets a North American Car of the Year!!!! Lets put this to bed. Do they make Good cars?
The 2009 Hyundai Genesis wins the crown of 2009 North American Car of Year at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. "Genesis represents everything we've learned, so far, about engineering great automobiles -- and we're delighted that the judges have recognized the good work of our R&D teams," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America acting president and chief executive officer. "And we're not stopping here ... Genesis will share company in Hyundai showrooms this spring with its rear-wheel drive platform-mate, the Genesis Coupe." This year, the jurors considered more than 50 new vehicles before selecting the top three cars and top three trucks. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Ford Flex were the other finalists.

Only 10 years ago, Hyundai was still at the butt of Jokes by most automotive journalists. While Even Top Gear has given Hyundai's New European Line-up good reviews, some people still snicker at the idea of Hyundai making a good car. I personally have been depending on the workhorse Hyundai Accent for years now. I know for a fact they make good cars. The question is, do you think so?

Yes, Good, actually very good but not yet Great..They have come from so far over the past five years. It will take another five to ten for them to get where they want to be on the automotive land scape.

Come on, the nose is straight from the 3series with a S class grill. This is why North America (aka the USA) can't build a car worth S%!# because we consider this glamed-up derivative car note worthy.

veyron1001, Since the car doesnt have to be made in North America There are alot of f'n cars that are great. Did you just want to make a comment on my statement or did you have something to actually say.
E36er, Lexus copied Merc when they first came out and now there are alot of folks in the US that consider them or a few of them great cars. I am not one of those folks but I have heard they exist. Both you guys try to think before you speak.

Then a Japanese car should have been awarded. They are the ones who have the most money. However, unforfunately, not a single japanese made large sedan was ever awarded as north america car of the year.

Not even a Lexus....

I'd say they are jsut as good if not better than any of the competition. If competition in this case means non tier 1 luxury cars and othe cas for the masses

Before you get hit with any negative comments I'd just like to say that YES Hyundai is building good cars and they are getting better..much better! It's not only a question of how good their cars have become but more importantly the innovation, growth and change this company has shown .....alot more than many other car companies including the big three who could learn a thing or two from Hyundai!! They've come a long way in a very short time from the very first PONY to the latest ACCENT...for overall value, quality, warranty and price Hyundai is hard to beat not to mention an ever expanding lineup that meets all the same criteria.

Good job hyundai. I know many hyundai owners, and they are all happy with the value and reliability they get with their cars.

Hyundai proves thst robots can make better cars than people and the robots never complain, get sick, or strike. Hell, they don't even have a union. Take that, UAW.

Hyundai is light years from where they were a decade ago in the auto industry. But in people's minds they are still a slot behind Mazda for some reason. But I put that on people who are not too knowledgeable or saavy with the market. I par Mazda up with Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevy, Nissan. However car magazines continue to only do comparo's with Honda, Toyota, Chevy and Ford. Many times Nissan is not included, Mazda is very rarely involved, and Hyundai never makes their lists often at all.

It's a bias for sure. The cars still do not retain as much resale as their counterparts, same goes for Mazda. However things are changing the the brand is gaining a second look bringing worries to its competition. When the last generation Sonata came out, it really gave the Accord and Camry a run. Many said and I would agree to a point that it did look slightly like the Accord, but the price was unbeatable. They offered the 10yr 100k warranty first, which is now followed by some others (GM). Now they throw out a luxury sedan (Genesis) and SUV (Veracruz). Sure they know you are not going to cross shop a Lexus or Land Rover to them. But it's phenomenal marketing when you see a commerical where the Hyundai beats the Land Rover is many aspects except cup holders, LOL. It is a statement. We can build cars that are almost at the par and level of these bigger luxury names yet still cost less than your Toyota variant. Sure they may not be 100% with a Lexus or Rover but they strive to be and by showing this to their clientele, they are getting their fair marketshare which has consistently grown in recent years.

The new Tiburon and upcoming Genesis Coupe are going to sell well. I happen to like the current Tiburon, it just needs more power. And the Genesis coupe will be fun to read a comparo against the Z or G37.

I wouldn't pay 40k to have a base model luxury car with nothing in it. No Navi, no HID lamps. I am big on if you buy the car, go big or go home. If its a commuter car that is one thing or for work. But if its your daily, I would want all the amenities. a BMW or Mercedes without leather is just cheap. And people who dont get the bi-xenon lamps are again cheap.

We have always said they make good cars. But is the Genesis as good as a 5-Series, Benz or Lexus for less money, like their ads imply?

We think they're stretching quite a bit here.

But if you can get away with it and people are dumb enough to believe it, more power to them!

I think that there's a certain segment of the market that really doesn't care whether or not Hyundai is a prestigious as the tier 1 brands. These people are not necessarily dumb, they just don't care as much and they place lower pricing at a higher priority. They might also be willing to try something different. Would I buy this? Probably not, but Hyundai's offer is compelling for many and this is where they will make inroads. Good business case.

I would say they are good at what they do and what they do is making inexpensive cars, mostly hatchbacks and sedans no bigger than Camry.

It's only now that they have started making bigger and competitive cars. Veracruz is competitive, i hatches(i10 and i30) compete well with Polo and Golf respectively and most recent Genesis sedan & coupe compete well with 3 and 5 series(only on paper so far). Upcoming cars like new Sonata, Equus...etc also look promising. So Hyundai is definately doing a good job.

They're making quite good cars but they're in nothing at the forefront, they don't have any image that they're good at something, only overall quite good cars for the price.

I love the typical idiotic statements on here and Hyundai deserved the award. Main reason...more for your money! Yes Hyundai 'borrowed' name brand queues in the Genesis, BUT offered a very similar car for MUCH less payola.

Come on guys let's stop kiding ourselves here. You'd have to have been in a coma since the late 80s and woke up yesterday and some one showed you the new Genesis and Lexus GS 350 road comparison video. Then they asked you which one do you think is a better value? Not knowing any thing about the background of either, the obvious choice would be the Genesis. It's a no brainer. Like I've said time and time again, you'd have to first compare Hyundai with the Toyota brand before you jump the gun or skip steps. Agent 001 is absolutely correct and Chuckyg37s comments are sense less, worthless, useless and any other lessness you could think of.(ha,ha,smile)

Look at the last 2 years, Saturn Aura was named car of the year for 07', destined to go over the top of the Toyota Camry & Honda Accord(so it was said by the shortminded GM execs)...and look where Saturn Aura ended up? The back of the bus, like it never even happened. Then comes the Chevy Malibu in 08', a much better and "REVISED" version of the Saturn Aura, using the same under pinnings, powertrain, and certain cosmetic gagets. Malibu just tighten their bolts a little more, add somemore dampening material here and there. It gain a little bit of traction in sales compared to the Aura, but not enough to take away a significant marketshare from Toyota Camry & Honda Accord. So it does not mean that the Hyundai Genesis will be the "cream of the crop"...but it does have alot more potential in proving its' role compared to last 2 nominated pieces of junk!...Forget the award Hyundai, just prove your role! As the last 2 years GM just used this award as a "Penis Extension" and it really did not get them the "numbers" they were hoping for...LMAO!!!
