Future Indy Car Racing May Feature VW/Audi Engines
For the past several years, Indy cars ran Honda engines. No options, no modifications, no questions asked. Teams bought their engines from Honda, and turned them back in for rebuilds after a certain number of miles.

All that might change in 2011.

The Volkswagen group (VW, Audi, Porsche) have been showing serious interest in joining Honda as an engine supplier for the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar series when new engine regulations take effect in 2011.

Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Fiat, Mazda and Volkswagen sent representatives to an IRL meeting to discuss the future specifications for Indy car powerplants. Of those attending, it seems the VW Group has the most to offer and the most to gain.

It is always open. Other engines suppliers simply couldn't keep up with Honda engines success. Toyota and GM stopped to develop those engines.

Pay attantion also that those team will consider joining once the engine regulations will change, currently they have no chance to beat those Honda engines

There's an error in the article. E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Not the other way around. The writer of this article also seems to be unaware of exactly how large Alfa Romeo's owner FIAT is. They do own Ferrari which has very successful experience with building F1 engines/cars and also provides very competent cars for GT series of all types. Having Ferrari whip something together and slapping an Alfa Romeo badge on it, preparing the US for their reported return would be a pretty good idea. There is, after all, room for two engine suppliers in IRL, isn't there?
