Fiat And Chysler Discussing Partnership Plans
Fiat is talking with Chrysler LLC about giving it access to its technology in exchange for a stake in the US car maker, a source close to the Italian group said on Monday.

"Between the two groups there is talk about Chrysler possibly using Fiat technology in exchange for a stake," the source told Reuters, confirming a report by industry publication Automotive News Europe. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Automotive News said in a report posted on its website earlier in the day that Fiat could give Chrysler access to platforms, engines and transmissions.

The source told Reuters a deal with Fiat would help Chrysler make vehicles that produce fewer harmful emissions.

Few people realize this but FIAT with its daughter companies is one of the most technically advanced carmakers in the world. Lancia had once one of the best all wheel drivetrains with Subaru-style center and Audi-style rear diff capable of splitting torque between rear wheels similarly to the way Evo SAYC/quattro with torque vectoring does. All that was powered by a turbocharged engine. Now Alfa Romeos Q4 are the only cars beside Audis and some Lexus/Toyotas to use TORSEN as a center differential. FIAT reinvented common rail injection in automotive applications, the fuel delivery system that completely dominated modern diesels and outgunned pump-nozzle systems from VW AG. This also made their JTD diesel badge to be some sort of benchmark in both refinement and durability. They recently developed small trubocharged T-Jet engines to keep up with VW in Europe. They own Ferrari and Maserati, brands which technology need no advertising. What mostly pushed them into financial struggles was poor reliability of their cars (which made resale values diminish) and a long series of weird cars offered by Lancia no one wanted to buy.

Wow, this is a great idea. The distribution network is ready to go, a win-win for everyone.
