BMW 330i nearly flawless
Everything is perfect apart from one minor detail -- the side mirrors are a tad small
With every new car, there is something that doesn't fit right, perform right or look right, or just doesn't make sense. Sometimes it's as if, when all was said and done, no one made a final, critical analysis of the way the car operates as a finished product.
So when I picked up the keys to a 2006 BMW 330i, the notepad was ready to take down what surely would become a dozen or so criticisms, especially because this was a new model, redesigned, the fifth generation of a sedan that has become the benchmark for performance.
By Day 7, there were lots of checkmarks covering performance, handling, braking, styling and comfort. Under criticisms, however, I had but one: The side mirrors were a tad small.
Not since I began reviewing automobiles more than five years ago have I been able to produce such a paltry list of complaints about a car. But there it is -- one. It's embarrassing, really, to find so little, but it's not my fault.
This is an extraordinarily well-built car. It's comfortable, feels great and rides beautifully. It's pleasing to look at, goes as fast as you'd like, and, more important, stops even faster.
