Audi Looks To Score Big With Super Bowl Spot

Audi Looks To Score Big With Super Bowl Spot
While most of its luxury rivals retrench, Audi is looking to grab more market share with a stunt-filled Super Bowl spot.

After generating buzz with its "Godfather" spoof last year, the German brand is back with an action-packed ad that makes fun of the clichéd Hollywood chase scene - along with its closest competitors.

The 60-second spot, which riffs on everything from "Miami Vice" and "Magnum, P.I." to "Bullitt," features action stud Jason Statham on a high-speed chase through several decades. Statham, best known from the "Transporter" film series, actually drives an Audi S8 in the second and third installments of that franchise.

As he rushes through the 1970s, '80s and '90s, he wrecks one luxury car after another - Mercedes, BMW and Lexus - while trying to evade capture. Finally, he's able to escape when he jumps into a super-charged Audi A6 that takes him into modern times.

The tagline reads, "Progress is beautiful." Audi's advertising agency, San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners, created the ad.

Last year, Audi jumped into the 2008 Super Bowl after a two-decade hiatus with a parody of the famous horse-head-in-bed scene from "The Godfather," except the movie producer woke up to find the grille of a luxury car under his bed sheets.

Audi says the ad scored well with dealers and helped traffic to its Web site jump almost 200 percent.

So while most car companies are pulling back on TV ad spending, Audi is stepping up its marketing budget this year, by as much as 20 percent, and returning to the big game.

Audi reported a 7 percent decrease in sales in 2008, although that was far better than most of its competitors. At the same time, Audi saw its US market share rise.

"Finally, he's able to escape when he jumps into a super-charged Audi A6 that takes him into modern times."

I would think the A6 would be the last car they would be featuring in the ads. It is bloated looking, has a terrible weight distribution of 60/40 (http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/new_cars/Audi_A6.html), and is probably the most overlooked Audi model in my opinion.

The A6 is the best selling car in it's class worldwide outselling both the E-Class and the 5 series....
That might be the point of this commercial of using the A6... you know... brand awereness??

I think the new S4 or A4 would have been a better choice, personally.

You'd be surprised to notice that Audi and a lot of its customers are really satisfied with the A6, regardless of what you think of this particular model. I, for instance, given the choice between the competition, not only would take the A6, but I would take it in the Avant version. It might not be the better performing vehicle of the bunch, but it sure does have its appeal over the others. Besides, if you really think the A6 is THAT bad (which it sure isn't), then it wouldn't be wrong for them to try to boost A6 sales, don't you think?

Agreed. It is the Apple Inc. Advertising Syndrome. Bash your opponent. Bash your opponent. Bash your opponent. Bash your opponent. Bash your opponent. Bash your opponent... all while not defining yourself. This method also cost John McCain the Presidency.

At some point Audi is going to have to define what actually makes their brand better than Mercedes, BMW and Lexus in their advertising.

Hmm I think you ment risky, but possible very rewarding. Now if Audi would make a base Quattro for around 25k and in manual. I dont care if its a 2litre turbo I would seriously look into it.

If it's anything like last year's commercial it'll be HUGE for Audi. That supercharged V6 has some amazing specs. On the new S4 it gets 330 hp/p/f torque. Pretty much blows away its competitor (the BMW 335i)

I would've laughed at this last year but the new A6 is supposed to be quite good. I'd like to give it a drive to see for myself!
