Toyota Prepping Pink Slips for US And UK Workers - VW May Post 4th Qtr Loss
A warning of unprecedented staff cuts at Toyota, the world's biggest auto maker, and word of a possible first quarter loss by Volkswagen piled fresh pressure on struggling car manufacturers on Friday.

The bleak news came after a halt in dividend payments on Thursday by Italy's Fiat SpA, the first European car maker to report 2008 results, as it headed into what it called one of its worst years.

True and the Japanese Gov't picks up the Retirement and Health Care costs too! So Toyota can afford to pay more to keep workers happy.

like every civilized modern industrial country, japan has national health insurance. (why doesn't the u.s.? refer to first 4 words.) but it does NOT cover retirement costs. so detroit gets a DOUBLE WHAMMY from uaw.

XYZZ,

Japan is a nation of only Japanese people (it's an island afterall). The spirit of national unity and brotherhood in Japan (and many other nations) is different than USA. USA is a collection of diffferent peoples, so the idea of all of us helping everyone else out, especially in the face of the tens of millions of AMericans who are for all intensive purposes, worthless, isn't going to fly. Get over it, we all know our healthcare is messed up, but trying to go from what we have to what other countries has won't happen fast if ever.
