What Is A Luxury Brand And Who No Longer Deserves The Title?

What Is A Luxury Brand And Who No Longer Deserves The Title?
What constitutes a luxury car? We tend to use general guidelines such as price, design, comfort, and prestige  to classify the category. But this may longer be true.

Luxury cars usually offer a higher degree of comfort than their mainstream counterparts, typically with a sumptuous interior emphasizing design and beauty. Features such as interior leather and polished wood dashboards and a host of high tech accessories are common amenities in almost every car, but this no longer can be used to define the term luxury.

As you also know, many automakers develop "luxury" or halo vehicles from their existing mass production siblings in an effort to boost profit margins. To the manufacturer they simply add relatively minor enhancements and slap an new badge on the car and call it a luxury car. As a result, "luxury" is sometimes only in the perception of the consumers not in the reality of the product.

Also many automakers now may upscale variants of existing mainstream models that crossover into the luxury definition, thus blurring the lines between pseudo luxury and real luxury. So now is luxury defined more by style, price or maybe both? Does a brand name like Hyundai also command the appeal of Mercedes Benz?

So with that in mind what manufacturers do you think maybe associated with luxury but are simply playing a shell game.  Are they simply hiding behind gussied up mainstream models and profiting off others hard earned cash?  Or are they worthy of the title of a luxury car maker?

??? Ferrari and Lambo as LUXURY??? More like HIGH PERFORMANCE. AUDI and MB create very luxurious vehicles, they even set standards in the luxury market. But then again, that's MY way of viewing this issue, which is, by the way, just another attempt to create a mindless discussion on the forum, since there's not much more interesting news going on lately, obviously.

caixa2, I don't think you understand what a luxury vehicle is. Luxury doesn't equate to comfort. Lots of people think of it that way but it is not the case. A luxury item is something desirable, expensive, exclusive--something that is not easily attained. A Lamborghini is a luxury vehicle just as a Maybach or Bentley is a luxury vehicle. It is not, however, luxurious. Does that make sense?

S4cabriofoxone - YES! You are indeed correct! The word "luxury", as given to us in our Marketing 101 classes, does mean exaxctly that - something that one would like to attain but it is difficult in one way or another (in short and in layman's terms). But I was replying to BSBB's comment about separating the so-called "high-end" from that list, which logically would re-define the word "luxury" as to what you just mentioned. That's why the author of this article should have made that distinction very clearly - and back to my point: the author didn't do that for the definite reason of stirring debate over something that is not well defined, or better yet, related to individual pride and comments.

Luxury is subjective, to some, leather seats and auto climate control is enough to be considered luxury, to others, it's exotic wood from the African albino bonsai tree only found in the deepest reaches of some rain forest, and to others it's latest technological innovation like Mercedes has always been known for. I don't think re-badging necessarily means you cannot be considered a luxury marque, it just means you know how to take something you've already made and sell it for more. Profit margin is the goal for every automaker and if BMW could take the Mini, add a few extras and sell it for 70K, they would do just that. An S-Class Benz is true luxury to most of us but to some, it's no better than a loaded Avalon, and nothing less than a Phantom will do. The practical question becomes what does the Phantom do that the S-Class doesn't? Not much, but it's price tag and exclusivity make it the ultimate in luxury. It doesn't do everything 100K better than the Benz or even 200K better than the Avalon, it doesn't need to, it's a Phantom.

Not sure my post even makes sense, but I don't think you can define luxury, not for the masses. If I have never owned anything but a Daihatsu Charade, a loaded Honda Accord would make me feel like I am driving the ultimate luxury car.........

Haven't driven an Audi - but still you couldn't call them Luxury if BMW and Merc aren't! Going by that argument Bentley, Rolls would be the luxury cars.. The buffer between performance and luxury is getting smaller and smaller.. and it wouldnt be long before the buffer vanishes!

All premium cars should be called Luxury for lotsa reasons .. heck at the least to sift them from regular mainstream autos..

There are many luxury cars, ie., cars which are comfortable to sit in, and use top quality materials.
MB, Lexus, and Audi have the most luxurious interiors of the group (excluding less common brands like RR, Bentley

I had some time today and checked out 4 dealerships, BMW, MB, Infiniti, and Nissan (since it was next to the Infiniti one). Sitting in various cars is not really any way of determining the attributes that make a great car,
but I came away impressed with the MB cars, and not so much with the BMW ones. This was only based on the comfort and quality of materials standpoint. The Infiniti ones were not bad, but when you sit in a Maxima at the Nissan dealership, than see that the interior of the Infiniti EX is exactly the same, one has to wonder why spend the extra coin on an Infiniti. Actually, the Nissan dealership was nicer, and I was impressed with what you get for the money with the Maxima. This is only
my opinion.

Not offering a car with a V8 is killer in the luxury segment.
Their cars are way too close to the Honda sister cars.
Acura is definitely sportier than Honda, but a lot of the gizmos found on the Acura are also found on the Hondas when you get the Nav system.
An example is that the TSX is simply a rebadged European Accord...

This topic will cause a brand war and I think that was the intention. This has been discussed on this site numberout times. It's very few that I would call luxury brands. A lot make luxury products. Ie. The C class is not a luxury car in my opinion. I also don't consider the 3 series a luxury car...The E (too bland) and 5 (more sport), M45 (more sport), Lexus G or IS (more sport)...S class, &7 series, LS, Jaguar (as a brand), Bentley (as a brand), Rolls (As a brand)...plus a few more. Don't think that I'm hating on MB or BMW because I own one of each. My S I consider luxurious, while I don't think my 6 is. My 99 Q45 is more luxurious than my 6 series.

I think luxury is history based. MB has their place among diplomats, presidents, dictators for good and bad. BMW has established as sport-luxury since decades ago, Audi has worked up to luxury since their first Audi 100 1977, and Jaguar still ranks as luxury despites poor quality in 80-90, s. Maserati still counts as luxury car whit their latest Quattroporte, even if they don’t have a car for four people since 60,s Their four-door salons in 80-90 was not good enough for luxury class.
Lexus, Infinity, Hyundai may technically compare to those, but do that counts? You can drive those cars but no one will notice you, there are too bleach in design. What have they given to the car evolution? Just copy the best and maybe do it slightly better whit no charisma.
I rather own a Jaguar who failed down now and then, like my wife’s temper, than own a Japanese “perfect” car. Is like making love whit a rubber doll.

Lexus is a wanna be luxury car. Everytime I am in those things I can't help but acknowledge that it is a glorified camry. The switch gear, the driving dynamics, and the general operation of the engine and transmission seem very sub-par when compared to the likes of MB and BMW. For comparison a C-Class feels like a baby S-Class, while a ES feels like a camry with fake wood and cheap leather. The LS feels more like a bloated camry than anything else.

I know it's not acceptable to compliment asian imports on this site, but if you want to be believable when comparing MB vs Lexus, the last thing you should compare is the transmissions. Obviously you haven't driven a benz in the last 5-10 years, otherwise you'd know to say they have struggled with their transmissions would be an understatement. I had a CLS500 for a demo once and thought the tranny was going to come up through the floor boards as it down-shifted approaching a red light. I immediately pulled the car in the service drive and was told they know about the problem, but at the time there was no fix for it. I turned it in for a ML500 and it did the same exact thing. Truth be told, all the rubbish people mutter on here regarding "luxury' is far too subjective to be debated. What makes a button a "luxury" button, etc... It's all rubbish and you sound like a "fanboy" as opposed to rational individual.

When I think Luxury, the first thing that comes to my mind is Mercedes-Benz, followed by Maybach, Bentley, & Rolls Royce. I myself refrain from considering Lexus and Audi as Luxury brands; more along the lines of premium.

I beleive that Porsche, along with Lamborghini, Ferrari and Jaguar renown them selves as (premium) performance brands. However I do not feel BMW fits into either category. BMW (in my opinion) is more of a fashion item; a fashion item that is of average to premium quality while offering substantial performance.

I can relate BMW to brands such as Coach and/or Fendi, however I associate superior brands like Prada, Gucci, and Armani with Mercedes-Benz.

I do not classify Acura and Cadillac as premium or luxury brands due to the lack in market-share, however Cadillac retains substantial quality products compared to Acrua (when viewed as a Luxury brand).
