Would 415 Horsepower For LESS Than $40K From An American Car Company Be Enough To Make You Think Twice About Buying Foreign?

Would 415 Horsepower For LESS Than $40K From An American Car Company Be Enough To Make You Think Twice About Buying Foreign?
A funny thing happens when a car executive happens to be a car enthusiast as well.  Bob Lutz almost single handedly spearheaded and pushed through the vast GM bureaucracy the adoption of the rear wheel drive platform used in Australia initially as the short lived GTO, but more importantly the G8 sedan.  Powerful, fun to drive and inexpensive, the G8 brought big American V8 rumble back to the family sedan in a package that looks on paper more like a 5-Series competitor, than it does a Camry wanna be that its opening price point might suggest.

For 2009, the bar has been raised with the addition of the GXP model.  A 415 Horsepower brute of a car aimed squarely at the BMW 5-Series, but with a base price of just over $37K is priced more like a 330i.  Opt for the 6-speed manual and Pontiac actually gives you money back.

Yeah sure, you could argue that people buying BMW's aren't cross shopping the local Pontiac dealer, but honestly I am wondering if they shouldn't be giving this Pontiac at least a look before strolling to the Foreign makes.

Did I mention the 415 Horsepower engine FOR LESS THAN $38K?

Don't get me wrong, the 330i is the benchmark, but start adding options to the $40K base price and it is really easy to close in on the $50K mark.  Benchmarks are expensive.

Of course the Infiniti G37 is a fair comparison as well price and size wise, but did I mention the 415 Horsepower engine that comes standard in the GXP?  A number the G37 just doesn't come close to.

Perhaps I am being a little sarcastic here, but times are different than they were a year ago.  People are looking to hold onto as much of their money as possible, at least what is left of it after the stock market crash.  This car I think deserves at least a look, the price alone earns it that right.

Is Pontiac onto something here with their bargain basement priced super sedan?  Is this the performance bargain of the decade?

Let's look at the facts, to gain access to other 400HP + cars, you would need to spend considerably more money.  The 330i only has 300HP, to get 400 you need to step up to the M3 - a car whose pricing starts at $54,000.  The Lexus IS-f offers 400HP, but there again a price north of $50K limits its appeal, and both the BMW and Lexus are smaller than the GXP.  The BMW 550i has more power but the price is huge in relation to the GXP.

Only the Hemi powered cars from Chrysler come close, but only the Challenger offers a manual transmission option, and face it we are car guys who like to change our own gears with a traditional clutch.

So what's an enthusiast to do?

In choosing the GXP are you lowering your standards or "settling" for a lesser car, or can the argument be made that the BMW is worth the extra money.

I will grant you that in terms of interior materials and texture, the BMW is superior, but that superiority comes at a hefty premium.

And again I remind you the GXP has 415 Horsepower.

So go ahead, answer the question I initially posed - Has Pontiac made a compelling enough case to at least get you to take a look at the GXP, and would you consider the GXP over a BMW, Lexus or Infiniti?

Your Maxima isn't keeping up with the GXP model that's for sure. Maybe a G8 V6. Perhaps a G8 GT but not a chance against a G8 GXP.

Yay 415hp!!! the best car outta the group now!!!............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... no...

When people buy a car... most of them look at how long the car can actually last. Power isnt always going to be the first thing that people look at considering the gas first of all. Second of all they look at the most important quality regardless of interior or exterior they are going to see whether or not its worth it.... my friend.. ;]

funny now 300C is also a RWD, but i bet a civic SI can out handle it any day of the week.
and since i have also driven a 4.0 V6 mustang, i can assure you it doesn't have any power nor handling to compete with many FWD cars.

RWD is not everything. from my own experience, RWD is good for high power cars (meaning it is better in drag racing). i have yet to experience any other advantage of RWD in real world driving.

i am not kidding myself due to the reality of racing a G8 twice(from the light, not a roll. race ended at 3rd gear). my maxima is also a 6speed btw, which can out pace(nearly a full car length)the automatic version of the 6th gen maxima(raced an auto maxima, too btw)

i dont know what model the G8 was. i thought they all carried the same V8 engine

also, also, also: my maxima is certainly not stock; i know a stock maxima cant win against a G8 so figure in the following mods: intake, manifold, y-pipe, and pulley. im gonna get headers, exhaust later(6 months maybe for both) than the flash as final btw

the sailor -

i am pretty sure the G8 was an auto; did not rev at the light like i did. in addition to all my mods and whatever, you have to factor in the driver itself. both my launches were nearly flawless. we were neck and neck till i let go at 80MPH. the G8 could probably outrun me after 100.

I really wouldn't mind getting smoked by a G8 'cause i'm confident my Impreza's going to go where I want it to on a chicane.

Exactly, people do look at how long the vehicle will last and the GXP has the best in the business, 5year 100k powertrain. How about that quality, I'd invite you to go down to your local Pontiac Dealer and take a look at the G8, period. It is the best bang for your buck, HANDS DOWN and the materials used are up to European standards, fit and finish is amazing. Go drive one you will see. I have driven both the v6 and v8 versions but have yet to take on the GXP and I must say, both impressed me. B4 everyone puts in his or her two cents, get away from the fact it's a PONTIAC (because I know everyone on this site is all about the BRAND) and you will be really surprised, it is a PONTIAC!

Actually that would be the 3rd point of why I would never buy one behind the fact that its a Cadillac with a different skin and that it its American. Even though the 330I is 100hp down it is still the faster car.

out run... i dont think so. but if thats what you choose to believe, then good for you. The truth is, a year out of the dealership and things starts to fall apart, then the 37K seems like a bargain for the other two...

1UAW, 95% of the posters on this site have never even touched the cars they bag on with their own two hands, but they don't let that stop them from forming an opinion. They're like a bunch of parrots with typing skills. Can't you just hear them? Raaaat!... BMW's the best, BMW's the best, lexus sucks... Raaaat! 95% of BMW buyers don't want a Pontiac (or more accurately in this case, a Holden). Yet with the G8, several aspects of this car shade the Germans. Ride and handling are examples of this, as the Holden engineers build chassis far superior to their US equivalents.

Australian tastes are different to the US, with a preference for a firmer European ride but supple enough to handle rough Aussie roads. The benefits to handling and roadholding are there for all to feel in the G8. Remember the Aussies spent decades developing the 'big sedan with rear-drive chassis characteristics' when the rest of the world moved to front-drive in the 70s.

Ford in Oz are in the same boat. For years in Australia there was shear amazement that these sedans were never exported to the US, but I believe that reasons for this were largely political (UAW!)......

I don't need horsepower as a reason to purchase a domestic car. Ford is producing some strong vehicles at this time, Chrysler has the Charger/Challenger and GM with the Malibu CTS and up coming sedans. No don't need gimmicks for me to purchase solid sedans built here in the US.

I would NOT buy one new, I WOULD buy a used one, after depreciation sets in I will probably be able to pick one up for low 20s or maybe even high teens. Corvette motor, with all the aftermarket support that is sure to follow would make this an awesome weekend drag car and DD/grocery getter. I would not consider it for my "grown man's car" just too boy racer for my taste.

Honestly, this topic shouldn't even exist. Power-hungry people looking for the best value will be excited about this. People with money looking for prestige and power won't give this car a second glance. This is a generalization by the way.

IDK... I like the idea of retro versions of the past I.E. Camero, challenger, and mustangs but it still comes down to being inferior to the imports in technology and quality. Sure if I wanted to get in a car and not think twice about what the JONE's are drivin and all I wanted was a car and did not care what the value of the car is in a couple of years.....I might just ink up on one.

horsepower numbers mean nothing... hmm... i wonder how many rpm it takes to even juice that 415 hp outta that. hows 415hp going to transmit on a mid-sized sized family sedan? oh gosh... i can only imagine the amount of torque steer & understeer than rwd is going to produce. thanks but no thanks. ;] ill take an impreza wrx sti in white please. sensible, cheaper, more AGILE & more fuel efficient.

Just because the 5 series is way over-priced it doesn't make me want a G8. Ugly outside, crappy interior, 50% first year depreciation and terrible dealer experience. 600 HP wouldn't get me in one. This car is truly a great example of the wrong car at the wrong time. Makes the Flex look brilliant in comparison.

Holden makes some nice performing sedans in Australia for GM. Unlike many American brands these Holdens not only have high HP but also handle well.
