Is this Fair? Japanese Government To Step In And Help Pay Idled Auto Workers

Is this Fair? Japanese Government To Step In And Help Pay Idled Auto Workers
Thousands of Japanese car workers will soon draw part of their pay from the government under a scheme to prevent redundancies at companies hit by production cuts.

Mazda and Mitsubishi Motors, respectively Japan’s fifth and sixth biggest carmakers, have applied for the employment adjustment grants, according to industry officials, and others may follow soon.

The grants are available to struggling manufacturers of all types but the particularly sharp downturn in the car sector, combined with a recent expansion of the programme, has made carmakers eligible for large levels of support.

Mitsubishi, for example, plans to build passenger cars at its main plant in Okayama prefecture on just seven days next month. On the other 14 weekdays, the plant’s 3,000 full-time workers will stay at home but receive 85 per cent of their wages, half of which will be paid by the government.

Why not. At least they are not throwing money into a black hole as the U.S. government is doing for the big three.

Agent009, why would you even care? What is the significance of a thread like this? Pointless.

The significance is that seems to be a WTO no no.

And since you know we are in a world economy, do you want the competition to an unfair advantage? I guess to you it might be fair for the feds to pay all Chrysler wages until the competition withers all around them becuase they are playing free market rules.

Does the best man win in that situation, or did the government with the deepest pockets do so?

DTE, Your post is even more pointless than this thread. And if Porsche does develop a new fart cannon, rest assured Audi will be the first manufacturer to copy it. I can see it now, the new Audi RS6FC.

The only relevence that I can see is the comparison between the fact that these car makers want to take care of their own people in Japan but would lay off US workers at their US plants.I know that Toyota is still trying to pay it's idled US workers due to this country's down turn in sales. At least for now that is. Certainly companies like Mazda and Mitsubishi may not have the cash flow to do this in this country. It then creates the question that Japan seems to want offer it's unemployed auto workers wages but why doesn't the US do this? Maybe that's what 009 is refering to.Of course the UAW has been offering somthing like this for unemployed or idled workers for some time.I don't know of anyone not in the auto industry that would support such a move by the federal government without doing this to every industry where there are unemployed workers or idled workers. As for the "Black Hole" comment: don't you think the "black hole" is far more appropriate to the banking/mortgage industry then the car industry? At least congress has demanded some accountablility with the auto industry. So far no such thing has been required of the banking/mortgage industry(at least not yet)We will have to wait and see how the Obama administration goes about this.

When Toyota pays idled workers, that's good. When GM does, it's a "Job Bank," and bad.

I love this list. An altered reality.

If I had known it was your cousin chunky, I would have danced on the hood before she took it home. And everybody knows, NONE of this damage could ever happen at the dealer, right?

LOL, ChunkyMicro, some of your anti-Toyota and anti-Lexus comments somehow happen to be funny :-)

I guess stupid drivers like Chump and his cousin don't fall too far from the tree. And I figured that Chump doesn't take any time reading the articles before spewing his garbage. So, heres an interesting part of the article..."Toyota said it would not apply for adjustment grants. It plans to cut 18 shifts at its domestic factories over 11 days in February and March..." Whereas "Nissan, which made use of the grant scheme when its fortunes sagged in the 1990s, may be preparing to do so again. The company said it was still negotiating with its union over how many days workers would be told to stay at home during production shutdowns... By the way Agent009, I didn't see the picture of the Lexus factory in the article..hmmmm?

Chunky, If I didn't know better I'd say you wrote that little work of fiction yourself. But alas, far too many big words for you. How about this though? It's from the Urban Dictionary. Infiniti..... A Nissan with luxury options--in short, a utilitarian car with snob appeal. "Is that a Maxima?" "No, it is not! It is an Infiniti I30!" "In other words...it's a Maxima."

I must say, when I look at it I fail to see a global conspiracy aimed at the big 3. But then again... *cue theme song to twilight zone* I could be totally wrong.
