Audi Super Bowl Teaser Ad - YES! It Is Entertaining. BUT WILL IT SELL CARS?
Audi has not been shy about challenging the competition in the last 12 months with their very aggressive advertising and web videos intended to bolster the Audi brand image.

Whether taking a scene from the Godfather and adapting it for Audi, or the Meet The Beckers series of videos that were in your face, and perhaps borderline offensive at times, it is obvious Audi WANTS to get your attention.

Of course, that is what advertising is meant to do, get your attention.  In the preview for their newest spot, scheduled to debut during Super Bowl 43, Audi appears to again be taking swipes at the competition as a means to position their cars in the marketplace.

Take a look at the video...

The question that begs to be asked and answered is, Is this form of advertising effective, and more importantly does it make you want to go and look at and possible buy an Audi?

Knowing that not everyone in the market for an Audi is looking at either the R8 used in last years ad or the current S5 as shown in this years ad, does the "halo" created by both of these cars help to bolster the image of the rest of the Audi lineup.

Audi is betting big on their advertising campaign, I for one find it amusing and entertaining.  Of course you aren't here to know what I think, so why not check in and tell us if you think Audi is correct in marketing their products in the manner they have chosen.

Don't forget to check out our many galleries of photos, the recently added Volvo XC60 and Porsche Museum are must sees if you haven't checked them out already.

Also, don't forget to send us your photos on the go by e-mailing them to mobile@AutoSpies.com

Actually this year they are advertising the A6 and not the S5 as you mentioned in your post. This is a volume car that they definitely are trying to sell more of. I think that what they are doing is attention grabbing and I would definitely consider Audi for my next purchase.

i don't think Audi is supporting the A6 this is a brand advertisment. The Full ad is out and is great. I think the R8 is some of the reason that the advertisment was so sucessfull last year. The new ad is great though and should get some good play.

the A6 looks great in this video. Time to stock up on more black cars

This commercial is as entertaining as drowning. Everything about it is pathetic, starting with this black PR against MB, BMW and Lexus and then the camerajob and selection of soundtrack. The exact opposite of Top Gear. Audi must have outsourced filming and after-editing to India, hiring "professionals" for USD 0.05 per week.

My opinion is they would have been better off to focus on brand image again with the R8. The biggest selling point I'm told from audi salespeople is that people walk into the dealer and ask for a car with headlights like the R8 they saw in the commercial.

Too bad Audi has to bash the competition in order to try and validate itself. M-Benz and BMW do not resort to this type of advertising because they don't have to. Kinda funny that Audi focuses on the 70's-80's and uses that against MB/BMW...when they could barely sell cars in the US.

Actually.... Audi in the 80's was doing quite well and was the fastest growing luxury brand in the U.S until some very poor T.V reporting and poor common sense, almost killed the brand in the States.

to me the video was funny as hell. The part about the Lexus was the best. The way Jason looked at the Lexus and the old couple argueing. I think he prefered to walk in that segument.

I think if people on this website hated it then it was a hit. Go back to last years comments

I will past last years comments here:

"It was an ineffective ad and a waste of money. It was too long, the ‘reveal’ came too late in the ad, and by my non-scientific observation most people didn’t connect the dots between the RR grille in the rich old geezer’s bed and the horse head from the godfather movies. It didn’t hold people’s attention either. Audi NA appears to have some marketing problems. They should hire a head hunter and poach the entire marketing department of another brand (say, BMW...) who has the marketing down. It especially disappointing because one of the best car ad's ever was the Audi 'ski jump' quattro ad from 1986 and 2000. They should have just used that and saved the royalties spent on the godfather clips. A better idea would have been to run a mainstream Audi and great winter vehicle, like the All-Road or an A8, up the ski jump and then for laughs, have an R-8 (with studded snows of course) do it too. Now that would have been cool. The ponderous ad they put forth was a complete waste of money. " - nybimmer

"The reaction from the Super Bowel Part I was at was, "What the hell was that?". Nobody was impressed. The did mention seeing the R8 at our local auto show and commented on how nice the car was, but thats it. I personally thought it was lame, sure the Godfather is an iconic movie, but its 30 years old and every parody is sooooo cliched including this one. If they want to be thought of as an innovative company why copy countless others. If their are warning old luxury, why show a sports cars? My opinion a complete waste of time & money for Audi." - theoptimisticpessimist

"I thought it was upsetting so what I thought was a vintage Mercedes destroyed. However, a friend of mine did say "that is that car," so I guess the ad worked. The genesis add was more compelling though. http://www.ecobeteater.com" -ecobeater

"Thats because they know your an Audi nut. Im sure you dropped some knowledge on them. In general I saw a lot more ppl, talking about the Genisis."-no1listensanyway

"Today all premium brands are the "new luxury": MB, BMW, Jaguar (XF), Infiniti, Lexus, Acura, Cadillac ... All offering non-excessive designs, sporty cars, featuring advanced hi-tech, etc. Old luxury as defined by you (and Audi as well) is non-existent today. Audi are fighting an imaginary rival here. My concern as well: what does an exotic (excessive?) super-car to do with luxury? Not much. And if Audi want to point out super-cars are the new luxury, then they shot themselves in the feet since they're featuring only one super-car in their product portfolio. The other Audi cars are by this latest definition still ... "the old luxury". How ironic. -TimE

In fact, if you pay attention to the advertising, is always praising Mercedes Benz and BMW, cause is very clear that they have to emphasize that they are better than BMW or Mercedes and is like an obcesion for them, they who they are, now the quetion is Do you think that MB or BMW fell their supperiority menaced in any way by AUDI? (might be). When you are really good, you do not need to advertise it.

First off, kudos to Agent 00J for his vast automobile knowledge. To mix up a S5 with an A6 takes some skills.
In order to be taken seriously on a web-site dedicated to the car enthusiasts or so called enthusiasts, you should know your cars a bit.

As for the comments that I am reading here, I am stomped by;
A- Lack of education
B- lack of knowledge
C- blatant fanboism

Most of you simply missed the point, Audi is not "attacking" the competition. If you had not A, B or C in your head, you would have seen that Audi is saying that M-B was "The luxury" brand in the 70's, BMW was "it" in the 80's and Lexus was in the 90's. We are now well into the 00's and it is Audi's turn.

I can appreciate that you disagree with the delivery of the message, that the video clip is not to your taste or whatever you may think but to not see this message or to refuse to see this message, well, refer to A, B or C and pick one or all.

This is what progress is all about, but you need an open mind, and many here don't have that.

The Audi A6 commercial was excellent. They had to do some real stunts and it cost them some money to do.

The Hunyndai ad was just a bunch of screaming actors that really don't work for the car companies they so called represented.

p!$$ on Hunydai !!

I thought the Audi commercial was better than the Hyundai one. The look on the Transporter Dude's face was priceless after seeing the Lexus ES300. Audi did the power slide parking thing to diss Lexus a few years ago and Lexus came back with the GS commercial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Nohcb5Lqs

I expect Lexus to come back with a rebuttal.

First off, I have no brand loyalties whatsoever. But this commercial was hilarious. Especially the Lexus ES part, he just stared at it.
