Who is the king of the 'Ring? Nissan GT-R vs Porsche 911 GT2.

It was a throwaway statement, but once it was reported and widely quoted, it caused quite a controversy. Oh, how we all love a tempest in a teapot.

It went thus. August Achleitner, the demure chief of the Porsche 911 range, was speaking to an Australian Web site when he was questioned about Nissan's claimed 7-minute, 29-second lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a new GT-R. His response was pure nitroglycerin. He reported that Porsche had indeed taken a GT-R to the 'Ring, but that its test driver could only manage a 7-minute, 54-second lap. On the same day, a 911 Turbo and a 911 GT2 ran 7:38 and 7:34, respectively - slightly outside the times previously set by test driver Walter Röhrl, but only by a few seconds. Achleitner then suggested that the only way the GT-R ran the claimed time was using special sticky tires. We'll never know if he uttered that last point wearing an impish grin, but he must have known that such comments would prove explosive among the Porsche and Nissan communities. Sure enough, since the story broke last year, the Web has been alight with claim and counterclaim. In its initial riposte, Nissan offered Porsche, and any other car manufacturer that might be interested, a demonstration of how to extract the best time from the GT-R. Meeeow.

Should Herr Achleitner have opened his mouth? Probably not. Was Nissan's response a little childish? Possibly. Why do we care? Because it has prompted two car manufacturers to start bitch-slapping each other and caused one of the most interesting car debates of our time, namely - is the new $77,840 GT-R really faster around the Nürburgring than the $194,950 pinnacle of Porsche's sports car lineup?

Yet you know you would buy yourself a Carrera GT if you had the money. People buy Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Porsche's, Aston's, Zonda's and they will never use it on public roads.

I'm a proud owner of a 997 TT and a GT-R. I'm in love with both of them. I'm amazed by all the trash talking between the two fan clubs and how much in price they are and blah blah blah. We tool our cars on a track and we all have drinks over it after wards and laugh. Porsche will always be a Porsche and the Nissan will always be Nissan but the GT-R is the flagship and it's one great car.

You guys argue over figures that only professionally trained drivers can achieve. Tires, conditions, & how the driver feels in that particular moment dictates the results. Put all your biased views aside and enjoy cars in general. Otherwise you'll be one pissed off S.O.B that is plagued by the numbers game and not by the actual experience. I'll tell you BOTH the Porsche and GT-R offer different experiences and it's unique to each.

From your comment "crappy", I guess that's why the big 3 are going belly up since no one in the world trust American even themselves.

A buffoon comment made by a buffoon.

Unrealistic facts will never diminish the GTR in my opinion, the car is incredible. However, Nissan, the manufacturer, would certainly lose a tremendous amount of respect and credibility if their reported ring time is exaggerated.

This is old test done by Chris Harris(Kenny P - photographer) but last time he wrote it for Drivers Republic, now for Automobile, it was also at autospies:[http://www.autospies.com/news/Magazine-Tests-The-GT-R-At-The-Nurburging-And-Can-t-Come-Close-To-Nissan-s-Claimed-Time-37943/]. These are the same tests.

Both cars are 17 second slower than their claimed times, Nissan claimed 7:38 at Bridgestone tires, Porsche claimed 7:32.

My answer is "so what". Doesn't the Corvette ZR1 claim 7:29 around the ring? You still have to give it to Nissan for coming up with a car that comes so close to the abilities of the GT2 for over 100 grand less. The other point is that at those kinds of speeds I would guess the GTR is easier to drive then the GT2.Further to make such a heavy car handle as well as it does is also an accomplishment. So for the money you pay for a GTR(approximately 75 grand)no other car up to that price range performs as well. Further from 75 grand to 200 grand only the GT2 will essentially equal or in some cases slightly out perform the GTR. It is only when you get above 200 grand do you have vehicles that will best the GTR.That's quite an accomplishment when you think about it.It will be interesting to see how the Audi R8 V10 does against the GTR.

It would be even more interesting to see how the Audi R8 V10 fares against the GT-R Spec V.

Its pretty clear by now that the Porsche is faster and the Nissan is cheaper. Buy whichever ride is most appropriate for you.

I think that Nissans Godzilla has been one of the greatest cars ever built based on its design and performance. Nissan has been considered a middle class economy car maker for many years and when they finally produce a car that can out perform a Porsche, it made the German car maker crap their pants because it out did their own. Sad.
