BMW will focus on eight-speed automatic transmissions

BMW will soon be offering a new eight-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF that is set to appear first in the 7-series flagship saloon. The new transmission is said to be both more fuel-efficient and cheaper to manufacture than the current six-speed unit, and its performance is also claimed to be comparable with the more advanced seven-speed dual-clutch unit launched last year in the M3.

Speaking with Automotive News, BMW development chief Klaus Draeger said the luxury carmaker plans to focus on automatic transmissions instead of dual-clutch units for its high-volume models.

“The eight-speed automatic that we developed with ZF can compete with dual-clutch transmissions on shifting times, but it’s lighter and more efficient and has cost advantages,” he revealed. “The incompatibility with high engine-speed designs is a disadvantage, however.”

Draeger went on to explain that dual-clutch transmissions are complex, expensive and heavy, especially for cars with longitudinally mounted engines and RWD.

ZF’s new eight-speed auto, meanwhile, has been designed for both RWD and AWD cars and will appear in several BMW and Audi models later this year. The extra cogs have the added benefit of improved fuel economy because the gearbox can better match engine speeds with the right gear since there’s more to choose from. To further enhance fuel-economy, the new ZF gearbox will also have an engine stop-start feature.

sing BMW’s own vehicle test data, ZF has found that the transmissions achieves a fuel economy benefit of 3% for gasoline engines and 6% for diesel engines over its current six-speed auto. Both the first and second generation gearboxes will be built at ZF’s Saarbrucken plant in Germany with half of these earmarked for use in BMW vehicles.

Another case of follow the leader. Say what you want about Lexus, but when BMW starts to copy them, they must be doing something right.

Lexus is still a boring ass car doesnt meet the performance of any BMW except for that ugly A$$ Lexus ISF that has to be the most ridiculous looking sports sedan ever...it has nothing but speed...it has no style interior looks like something thrown together was not well thought out in my eyes.....now tyhe reason why lexus made the 8 speed because they were FOLLOWING BMW when they made a seven speed SO WHOS FOLLOWING WHO NOW. Lexus has a long way to go before they can even match the complete package that BMW offers but hopefully they will get their in a century or so

see there you go again not thinking before you talk. for your information I OWN a 2007 750IL unlike you and its no wonder you bought an A8 that car is made for old fougies like yourself that car doesnt look aggressive and mean it looks bland just like the new LS460. and another point the BMW 5 series has the best resale value in its class "OH YEAH YOU DIDNT KNOW THAT EITHER" now that stuff you talking about better performance I tell you again LEXUS has a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG way to go to meet with BMW performance the only thing they have going for themselves is the ISF but who knows how long thats going to be

B7FAN, Lexus is approx. 15 years old and in that time displaced both BMW and MB as the best-selling luxury marguee in the US, the largest luxury car market in the world. They offer better customer service, better reliability, better fit and finish and on par resale value as of now. They have made strides (without alienating their core audience) with both the IS350 and IS-F, and offer hybrids which either offer better performance or better mileage (sometimes both). IMHO, Lexus at least takes the time to test/troubleshoot new features/technology unlike BMW with DSG and i-drive which have both received lukewarm receptions from both owners and auto mags alike. I've owned a Lexus (GS450H), currently own both an Audi (A8)and a BMW (335i conv.)so at least I can offer perspective instead of fanboy ranting.

THE A8 IS BORING I DIDNT KNOW BORING MEANT NICER LOOKING YOU MUST LIVE IN A BIZZARO WORLD WHERE EVERYTHING MEANS THE OPPOSITE. THATS THE BIGGEST JOKE EVER THAT THE A8 OUT SOLD THE BANGLE 7 SERIES STOP READING YOUR KELLOGS CAR BOOKS THAT COME IN THE CEREAL AND SHOW ME SOME REAL PROOF. THE A8'S RESALE VALUE IS TRASH COMPARED TO THE SEVEN. LISTEN AUDI STILL HAS NOT MADE A COMPLETE PACKAGE CAR COMPARED TO BMW ITS THE WHOLE PACKAGE NOT JUST 4WD LIKE YOU AUDI A$$E$.....4WD DRIVE IS AUDI'S CLAIM TO FAME AND THATS PRETTY MUCH IT OH AND THEY HAVE NICE INTERIORS

I am not a fan of AWD big cars yeah they MAY handle a little better than a RWD but with RWD you get better performance out of your car than a 4WD in my opinion.......yeah the A8 might have out sold in the european market but in the US there is no comparison that the 7 series sold more. I like my 7 series I am ready to trade it in for a 09 7 series once it comes out. I will give you the interior on the Bangle 7 series needed alot of work but the interior on teh 09 7 series looks like it is ready for all types of awards. the ONLY car that I might invest in from AUDI is the A7 if it is not a direct copy of the mercedes CLS like the Passat CC but we will see I have been a BMW fan for the longest it would be mighty hard for someone to get me to switch.

Well honestly speaking I still find 8 speed too many, but I really like to see what those car journalists have to say when it comes to eight speed tran on a BMW. It'll be nice to see someone posting that comparison here.

Lexus eight speed transmission in LS460 and IS-F is universally praised for it's super quick changes almost as quick as dual cluth, very smooth with improve fuel effecincy. Eight speed is definately great gearbox and not just an extra gear as said by many earlier. In a recent test of C63 AMG by Car magazine Middle East, though they gave it full five stars rating, at the conclusion paragraph they said they hope it had Lexus IS-F's like gearbox and that it's gearbox is no match to the IS-F's. Similary in the comparison test of M3 coupe and IS-F by Evo middle East, they too prasied the IS-F's gearbox and said it's probably the best automatic gearbox available.

too bad the is-f looses in every comparison test against the c63 and m3. So take away the advantage of the gear box now that bmw is on board, and now what does the is-f have over it's rivals. NOTHING

"Doesn't BMW have like efficient dynamics in that car or every new car they make? And the 8 speed auto in the Lexus is a gimmick. They created simply so they could finally get a "Worlds first...." award for something totally inefficient. According to most reviews the 7 speed auto from MB is more effective and efficient and the upcoming 8 speed auto from BMW should be even better."-Chuck37.........................................................................................................................................With respect to the article, does this mean BMW's 8speed will be less of a gimmick, or Lexus' 8speed more of a gearbox, Chuck?

Again you dope, show some proof that I ever made statements like that. Anybody can check my profile for past statements. I honestly believe you don't even have a car (or license). In fact, I think you must be
relatively slow in mental or emotional or physical development.

I honestly think ChuckG37 sits in a cubicle at Autospies Headquarters and is paid "by the post" in order to drum up site hits for ad traffic for the site. Who else would have so much time to respond to EVERY post at EVERY TIME of day? Probably some 15 year old part timer....just sayin'...now, ChuckG37, say something really personal about me so you can finally get banned...you don't contribute anything of truthful substance to this site, just fiery rhetoric in order to stir the pot. You are the type who would yell fire in a movie theater in order to see who gets trampled for the fun of it.

And so do I, but if you mean periodically, as in, once every 5 minutes, post for 30 minutes, then back on in 5 more minutes, can you really say you WORK on/with computers?

Autospies.com, the largest collection of "tools" on the internet. If BMW, Audi or Mercedes Benz does it, the opinion on this site is that it's pure genius. If Lexus or Toyota does it, it's laughable.
