That is a good job. We hadn't done that comparison in a while.

Lexus LS still kickin' ass. That car has been so awesome since it came out in 1989. Its original V8 engine was in Ward's 'Top Ten Engines of the 20th Century'. How bout dem apples? Lexus needs to make a IS coupe, not just a drop top. ES+HS250h+expanded IS lineup will make Lexus the leader in entry level by far. And the next GS needs to be more like the older sportier GS not the new luxo oriented 3GS

Yep, the ls is just as awesomely boring now as it was in 89. Still copying the Germans, still slower than the Germans, still nowhere near exciting to drive, especially compared to the Germans. The reason it's at the top of the flagship list here? Because it's CHEAPER than the Germans. If it were TRUE competition, and priced like they were, it'd be like the is and gs, near the bottom of the list, because it's not TRUE competition.

YAWN...cut the crap already. every magazine rated the LS400 ahead of the 7 series and SEL420 back in 1990. It kicked some serious ass. Cheap??? HAHAHA Very few LS sedans are sold for the base price. Average sale price of the LS460 is like almost $80,000. If people really like the 7 and S class that much more they'd buy one instead. People who buy these cars do not care about a few dollars here or there. LS is an awesome full size luxo sedan. Probably the best.

the LS is simply just one of the BEST CARS made, regardless of price. within it's class, it is unbeatable. after extensive road tests, the engineers at CR gave it the HIGHEST RATING: 99. (this is not even considering reliability; just the ROAD TEST result.) the german flagships only get mid- to hi-80s ratings.

You could buy an S Class for almost $18,000 under invoice, and a 7 series easily $15,000 under.

Um, the LS was created and specifically tailored for the American market. This is why it is so successful in North America. Cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series are also designed to appeal to non-Americans because a large number of them are also sold globally and thus have to appeal to a wider audience. Calling the LS the "best car in its class" is far fetched since every car in this class is the flagship of their respective brands. Stuffing the LS full of technology might work in the US, but everywhere else there is more to a flagship than filling it with every conceivable gadget ever created.

And I personally don't give a damn about what Consumer Reports thinks. In one of their latest perception studies the people who fill out those surveys rated Toyota as a "sporty brand" and "Lexus as a styling leader". Uh huh...

The 5 series in it's last year is still way ahead of the competition lol.

Once the new 7 series hits the dealers, the flagship segment should heat up.

New 7 series is almost ready so there is not surprise. What is a surprise for me is that the E clas is in its last year and still doing good, a mean we now that the new e class will go on sales before the end of this year... in the other side, the A8 also will be replaced , not as soon as the 7 but very soon.

Well done BMW, BMW did the best out of any auto brand mentioned in these lists. By the way, who cares who was better in 1989/90? What matters is here and now and right now BMW is doing better!

The TL used to be at or near the top of its class, I remember at one point when the '04 model came out it was the best-selling luxury car in the US. Sad to see how badly the new one is doing, not that I'm surprised.

What is really surprising to me is Volvo's state. Check out the fact that the C30, S40 and V50 combined can barely outsell the 1 Series, and the S60 is easily the worst-selling car in its class. It makes the 9-5 look like a hot ticket.

This will get slammed, but the TL is a Mid-size player in this field where it would only be outdone by the 5 series. If we go features, size and power (M5 notwithstanding), the TL stacks up to the 5 and E class very well. Too bad about the damn grill though....

No the TL is built off the Accord like the ES off the Camry. Its not a real luxury car. Its beyond ugly and overpriced.

These rankings don't mean it all. They are rather an indication of what the preference is out there when many things are taken into consideration like price, loyalty, cachet, etc...
