CAR: Audi R8 V10 better to drive than Porsche 911 Turbo

CAR is the latest magazine to get behind the wheel of the Audi R8 5.2 V10. Their verdict is that Audi's R8 5.2 V10 is a simply brilliant car that receives the truly rare 5-star rating. Best of all, to top it off CAR magazine even goes on to say that the Audi R8 V10 is better to look at and to drive than the similarly priced Porsche 911 Turbo. In fact, CAR says the R8 5.2 V10 is getting close to the brilliance of the loony Lamborghini LP560-4 but costs a whopping forty-thousand pounds less. Congratulations to Audi yet again for building what is clearly the best daily driving supercar on the planet.

As great as the V10 is my V8 is still potent enough. I do regret not waiting for this V10 but I think I still got a good car. Considering a 911 Turbo is very very good it's a huge compliment that the V10 is better or comparable to the 911 experience. If the next turbo has the PDK tranny I may pick up one of those badboys. I'm considering stepping away from my LS next year so i'll have some money freed up. Can't wait!

I just wish I liked the looks. I'd take a used Lambo or Ferrari instead.

You know Porsche makes a mid engined sports car. It's called the Cayman or Cayman S.For the money it has to be at or near the top in sportscar handling.(Perhaps an Elise handles better but barely and you saciface creature comforts).Maybe it's time that the 911 finally moves to mid engined.Porsche could easily keep the sillouette pretty much the same except for perhaps the addition of side air vents. It would be a very interesting comparison if Porsche put its GT3 engine or GT2 engine into a Cayman to see how it would fair against the other exotics. Porsche has done a brilliant job in making a rear engined platform work as well as it does. There is no way it can beat a mid engined platform except perhaps as a race car.The other point is that maybe Porsche needs to go with a flat eight now.Doing a turbo flat 6 gives incredible HP but does it give it the advantage it needs over a V8 or V10?The R8 is an accomplished car.But you have to wonder by Audi putting the V10 in it what then is the point of Lamborghini?Other then size the mechanics are almost identical. The AWD systems are almost the same. You are paying for the Italian body style. Further if Audi puts the V12 into the R8 what will that do to a the Murcealago? Maybe this is Audi's way of reducing it's inventory of car companies,or should I say Porsches way. Come to think of it why would Porsche allow the R8 to exist in the first place? I guess the answer is "money" right!

IMHO Porsche blew it. Think of where the development would be to the boxter/Caymen if they had made the 911 mid-engine in 1964 when they had the chance. They wouldn't be making excuses for having the motor in the wrong place.
