GM Slashes 10,000 Jobs And Cuts Remaining Workforce Wages
General Motors announced Tuesday it is cutting 10,000 workers, or 14% of its salaried jobs worldwide. A third of those job losses will be in the United States.

The troubled automaker also said it will cut the pay for its remaining U.S. salaried staff..

GM, which is preparing to present a long-term viability plan to the Treasury Department next week, said the cutbacks are part of the restructuring plan it submitted to Congress on Dec. 2 when it was first asking Washington for federal assistance.

Tough times indeed. However, it is time to The General 'right sized' and back into competitiveness. The reality is that they are way bloated in their cross divisional roles -- the inherent redundancy that has built up over the years has to go. Ford's 'Way Forward' plan that was devised years ago has simply put them in a better position today. I am sorry for all of those who will be losing their jobs, it is a tough times ahead. But for the good and survival of GM it is about time to get this thing turned around and well positioned to get back to lean high quality manufacturing.

More plant closures are planned. This is a step in the right direction for GM as a manufacturer. As with Chrysler and Ford, GM is bloated.

Considering levels of innovation and quality found at GM cars, these 10.000 people at work were mostly busy with belching. I wouldn't account this employment reduction as a big loss then.

Apparently you haven't been near a GM vehicle in the past few years. Please keep quiet when you don't know what you are talking about.
