Jeremy Clarkson Fails to See The Magic With The New BMW 730d SE

Now, though, there’s a new BMW 7-series. You wouldn’t think so from looking at it, or from studying the engine, which is largely the same as before. But this is a brand new car.

Headlines? Well the cheapest model — the 730 diesel — starts at £53,730 and for that you get a car that produces just 192g/km of carbon dioxide, which is less than comes from the back of some Ford Mondeos or a cow. More importantly, it will achieve 45mpg on the open road, if you are careful with the throttle. And if you are not, 0-62mph in a shade over 7sec and a top speed of 153.

Hey, 009, I posted this article a couple of days ago. Why was it moderated and didn't go through?

BTW, key opinion in this article:

"Sadly, though, the 7-series is let down by two things. First of all, BMW makes much noise, quite rightly, about the inherent sportiness of all its cars. But sportiness is all wrong in a car like this. It’s like buying a coat when you want a tablecloth. Yes, it has great steering, great reactions and great urgency, but they all come at a price. And the price is comfort and quietness. Put simply, a Mercedes is a more relaxing ride and in a big, very wide, very heavy and completely unsporting package, that’s what you want."

Perfect quote describing what people want in a premium luxury sedan, ie., quiet and comfort.
Ps.,
009 does that alot.

"I don't know about even though I'm very left brained and logical."

After having read several very biased posting from you and witnessed what you have selectively submitted I don't see your logic. Bias comes from illogical thought.

Well, by the way, I got 100% plus infinity on that assignment, so there! Seriously, If you were so logical you would realize that just because you can be logical, it doesn't mean that you can't be illogical at times and biased with irrational thoughts... hmmmm, that was an interesting sentence filled with logic.

Clarkson tends to give BMWs poor reviews, right? So what's the big deal anyway? Everyone knows BMW built this car with their philosophy in mind which means it is probably the most dynamic and best-handling car in this class. That usually comes at the cost of comfort. You can't really have either or. Most German reviews of the new 7er have said that its suspension is a bit hard (for handling purposes) but its seats are very cushy and comfortable. In my book that is an acceptable compromise, especially for a BMW, which should remain true to its roots. And they just did.

so Clarkson's problem with the car is he can't use the iDrive knob left handed? Sorry, but if every car over there is right hand drive, wouldn't he therefore have that same problem with the MB COMMAND knob, the Audi MMi knob, etc? Anything that has controls in the center would be a problem for him them, correct? And if he is incapable of turning or pushing a knob with his left hand, I guess he can't drive a stick then either, since in England that would ALSO be done left handed? Yet he seems to do that relatively often on the show, so... kind of makes me wonder how seriously to take his opinion here.

Agreed. If it's really that hard can't he just use the voice command? It doesn't work perfectly in some BMWs but it works very well in the X5 and I'd think it would work well in the latest and greatest, F01.

Jeremy Clarkson is a trip!

While on the topic of left-hookers, 1995e34, perhaps if you learnt to drive a stick properly it wouldn't matter, would it? I have owned both left and right hand drive stick shift cars and the problem with driving either one had nothing to do with the hand that was on the shifter. For those who do have a problem with using their left hand, bear this in mind, shifting gears is a programmed response. Operating the steering wheel is not. Therefore, it would stand to reason that a right hander would be far more comfortable having the dominant hand on the wheel and the less dominant hand to move back and forth, left and right. And really, this "proper" side of the road thing is getting very old and ignorant. Just so you know, Samoa has recently decided to do what it deems as best for itself. It will commence driving on the left-side of the road as of 6.00am on Monday, 7 September 2009. Hurts doesn't it?

As for using the mouse with the left hand, I sometimes do that too, most notably when I'm on the flight simulator and have my right hand on the joystick and my left hand activating something like the autopilot or moving a panel out of the way. Oh, speaking of flying, I should have the doubters know that on all helicopters, the captain sits on the right and operates the collective with the left hand, and the cyclic with the right. Same reason as before, up and down are programmed movements.

Autocar also said something very simialr. They siad it's too noisy, uncalm some say it's 'sporty character' but they said such a big luxury sedan shouldn't be like this and should be more calm, relaxed, comfortable, smooth...etc and new 7 lags behing competiotrs like S class and LS in these categories. They also said S class is still better because of the reasons mentioned.

In short they meant S class is a better balance of smooth, comfortable crusing and sportiness than 7 which is too sporty, so much that all those noises, ride quality and feedbacks in steering...etc becomes irritating and not acceptable in this segment.

They gave it 3 and half stars rating. Car Magaizne review was also not very differnt though Evo liked it. Both gave it 4 stars ratings.

NEWS UPDATE: CLARKSON ILL

It’s all very hush-hush at the moment, but apparently Jeremy Clarkson has a terminal illness. It’s as yet unknown whether it’s related to his years of smoking cigarettes or something else. Apparently, surgical efforts were not effective, and the very large growth lodged in his rectum (a bug) is eating away at him. Despite that, he’s his usual upbeat self, though it is clear in watching him walk (seen in the latest Top Gear episodes) that he’s favoring his anus (which most, if not all, Englishmen do).

To make matters worse, he’s had at least one medical complication resulting from chemotherapy. Specifically, instead of shrinking the large insect, the chemotherapy has shrunk his already diminutive penis. The silver lining to this side-effect is that his prior existing bitterness over the lack of girth and length has increased manifold and has led to a correspondingly increased sense of humor!

Many of his peers, such as Piers Morgan, are devastated. Now, the only pansy Mr. Morgan will be able to smash is the one in his garden. Not to worry, Jism’s wife has already had one of her enormous front teeth pulled for the production of a headstone once he passes on. As a side note, the tooth is so typically English and large, excess portions of it are being donated to piano makers throughout London.

You can send e-mails of well wishes to Jism.Clarkson@whingingpom.com.
