BREAKING: BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo Unveiled
Live pictures of the BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo (also known as the PAS or Progressive Activity Sedan) have been leaked on the internet. The pictures seem to have been taken at a European event for the new BMW Concept.

We expect all the official details and images to be revealed very shortly so stay tuned. The BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo will make its world premiere at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show next month.

It seems like former BMW design head Chris Bangle was also on hand at the event.

Sexy interior (really digging the steering wheel color combo) and nice rims, but to be honest I think I threw up a little when I first saw the exterior.

P.S. I wonder if the seats are two tone or if that is a different material in the middle?

A M3CSL would sell in such small numbers it wouldn't make any financial sense. Yes lots of high performance cars are cool, but they don't sell, nearly as well as vehicles that are sporty and family oriented, after all most of the people who can afford this car..are mature, and have families. I don't think BMW forgot about the enthusiast, considering the new M3 is a brilliant car, and has more performance than anyone could use on the street.

"They are ruining the M name by slapping it on everything."

are you referring to the X5M? B/c Porsche has a cayenne turbo and im pretty sure that didn't ruin there name. Actually im pretty sure Porsche is doing better now because of the cayenne.

"Like I said, BMW wants to be the Toyota of Germany. They want an SUV for every single tiny niche."

no they are just a successful company, that's what they do they do increase market share by venturing into new areas of the market..

How many SUVs does BMW need -- the answer is simple, as many as it takes to finally get one right. Leaving the issue of the dreaded iDrive aside for the moment, my wife was looking for a small SUV and the X3 looked right until she drove it in the winter and discovered that the rocker panel sticks out so far that she got her pants nice and dirty getting in and out of it.

ROTFL, Staarr, that was a funny and accurate comment. So accurate it made many very angry, hence the deboost :) Truth hurts, obviously. Indeed, some BMW fanboys are just scary in justifying of their favorite carmaker mistakes. BTW, I like your avatar :)

BMW Panamera. Front end is OK as it is 90% 7 series but what about the rear. A pillars rearwards it's a disaster.

Statistics say that most of european are getting old and that include americans....people like that could be a good market for a car like this, but honestly if I am going to buy a car for old people, in that case I prefer the R class to this ugly thing...

"JRob, where are you my good man? I can't wait for you to come in here and tell everyone how this is the next best thing since sliced bread. First, you are going to tell us all that BMW will limit production to keep it exclusive. Next, you will tell us what a unique vehicle this is. After that, you will tell us it sold so poorly because of the economy. Finally, you will tell us that car buyers were too stupid to understand this massive BMW flop. I am just waiting for some good comedy for this PAS, or is it POS? BMW, the Ultimate Ugly Machine. It has a nice ring to it." With your permission Staarr....

From the pictures on this site (or through the link, rather), I actually thought it looked (surprisingly) good. But check out the pics morpheus found on Der Speigel. it looks terrible. While I like some details, and don't even object to the idea of a 5 Series hatch, it just looks too awkward. As for the point of this car, there's no way that BMW will expect big volume. They don't get it with the 5 wagon, so how will they sell a lot of these? it's another niche car, although I really don't think they need any more.

It has a lot of CS elements in it which is a good thing. Im sure it will look great on the road, and be a sales success. But hey all of you can keep hating, b/c im sure you just looked at the one pic and jumped to a conclusion.

100% pure uglyness! BMW has lost it. All they seem capable of nowadays are creating odd looking non aggresive looking designs. Guess its going to take a while for the Banlge influence to wear off.

I like the front, but the back looks awkward. I will have to wait to see it in person though before making my final judgement. Personally, I would prefer a 535xi wagon (with 6MT) over this any day, but that is just my opinion.

I really like the 535xiT too, but considering the stigma Americans have with wagons maybe this is a solid alternative. They certainly couldn't sell fewer of these than they do 5-Series wagons here.

I think the car looks very good. Especially the front which says how the next 5-series is gonna be like. From some angles it has nice coupe-ish curvature.

However, a car has to be judged against its competition. How does the PAS stack up against the Mercedes CLS (and Audi sportback concept)?. I'd opt for the CLS or the sportback. Then, I thought they're gonna lift the PAS a bit to compete with Audi A6 allroad quattro. They didn't and even if they did, an estate is much more practical than a coupe and Audi estates tend to look very good.

So it looks like a weird car that has neither an appeal of CLS/sportback concept nor practicality of allroad quattro. A bit of a gimmick.

Why BMW do such things? Couldn't they just plain and simply follow the basic rules of car design and offer a proper 5er four door coupe and a proper raised 5er estate?

As downtoearth said, it is some kind of sportback concept.
Here is my problem.
Look how high the hatch opens up.
Seeing that garages in Europe are not tall at all, well you won't have much access to your trunk..

THis is just not an attractive vehicle. I'm worried that some of the most innovative car companies are running out of ideas and turning to these contraptions. This is just not a good design. The whole design is just ugly to me. First the Panamera, now this!!!

"what will this vehicle offer that a 5 series wagon won't? i guess it's just a midsize sedan with a hatch."

I think that's the point -- what it offers is the fact that it's not a wagon, which most Americans avoid like the plague. To someone who likes wagons, it might not make sense. It might appeal to people who don't, though, and right or wrong they make up the majority of the population.

BMW CS concept was really stunning, but it's very sad where BMW is taking it. A CLS competitor or new 8 series coupe would have been great offspring of CS concept, but it generating such eyesores like above 5 granturismo hatch is very sad and wastage of CS design cues IMO. Even X6 looks maserati compare to it.

All we need now is an X7 to complete the trio of useless vehicles which already have this hideous 5-series GT concept, and the X6.

The X6 is already a sales disaster. No one needs a less practical and more akward looking X5.

Breaking News: BMW introduces the X7 - a 7-series just raised off the ground.

WTF is this BMW!?!?!?!

I actually like it... a lot. It makes the X6's basic shape look right. I thought it would look stupid but this seems like the perfect concept for the modern luxury car--practical, spacious, aerodynamic, cutting-edge. There is always a method behind BMW's madness.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 2/14/2009 8:58:28 AM

I showed the pictures to my wife last night. When her X5 lease ended I wanted her to get a 535xiT but she wouldn't even consider it. "No wagons". She wanted an SUV again, she likes to sit up higher, blah blah blah. So I showed her this car, showed her the two-way trunk, raised seating, and movable rear seats, and she loved it.

It's a wagon that doesn't look like a wagon. I think that's who this car is for. People who want the utility of a wagon but without the "mommy mobile, Family Truckster" image associated with wagons. Wagons don't sell here. They just don't. And Americans are rebelling against SUV's, but still won't buy wagons. So rather than being like everyone else and coming out with yet another indistinguishable from the crowd crossover, BMW came out with this. We'll see how it sells, but I can't fault the logic. If it works, they're geniuses.

S4cabriofoxoneS4cabriofoxone - 2/15/2009 1:20:43 AM

Well, not only does it not carry the stigma of a wagon, but it's just interesting in general. It will have the same performance as a regular 5er but with much more practicality and maybe even more style. This and the Audi A7 have really peaked my interest--this car is a tad taller but they're the same overall shape and would make quite a bit of sense for me. They'll probably both come with AWD, both big enough but not too big (A8/7), practical, stylish, luxurious, sporty... and I'm guessing they'll both be in the $60K range.

I think there are a lot of people like me out there who would want something like this. It's a sweet spot that hasn't really been approached before. The X6, while nice in theory, is a bit too bloated and SUV-like. This is different because it looks like it will truly have ride height and practicality similar to an SUV, with the dynamics of a sedan.
