BMW Progressive Activity Sedan Surfaces As The 5 Series GT Liftback

BMW Progressive Activity Sedan Surfaces As The 5 Series GT Liftback
A BMW with driving dynamics, compelling style, and versatility; the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo.

With the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo, BMW opens a new segment in the automobile market by incorporating BMW driving dynamics, quality, and style into a new type of vehicle. As was the case with the BMW X5 as the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW 1 Series, to this day the only rear-wheeldrive
premium small car, BMW is again developing a new market segment and giving additional driver groups the unique experience of The Ultimate Driving Machine.

The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo is the production-destined rendition of the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS) development idea. For the first time, this concept car combines the looks and appearance of a sporty BMW Sedan, a modern Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo is its combination of stylish quality, luxurious comfort, and remarkable convenience.

As the name indicates, the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo is the ideal car for long journeys while still offering a dynamic driving experience in everyday traffic or short jaunts. The design of the body presents the character of a BMW dedicated to sporting performance.

I simply don't get it... The front is far to blunt and un-graceful (probably due to Euro regulations), and the 'double-decker' rear is too bulbous and ungainly. This is by far the least elegant BMW design of all time.

Wow, another retarded design from BMW(even worse than X6), looks like a station wagon of the 80's. Other than the 3-series, and the new 7-series, they seem to be missing it altogether these days.

That's not even a BMW in the eyes of society. What have they done!?!?!?!?!? It's too late.......why have the made what they would call a POS sedan? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Oh...this is horrible...this is already a failure, they are trying hard to do suicide. Looks like Audi will take the place of BMW very soon, might be even before the 2015. Mercedes did better with the R class and hopefuly they won´t come with othe car like those V5 or X6.......BMW fans should be in red alert....cause if they follow this path some budy will end buying BMW.

you make absolutely no sense, for the record this looks nothing like the X6 except for the roof line and that not even the same. And why should BMW be worried? This car will sell, and perform...very well. I dont think there is really anything to worry about at all, actually this is a time to be excited.

BMW's & hatchback's don't mix(even if 4door)....look at the 318ti's of the 90's...besides.....its basically the same car as n X6, but lower....why not just add air suspension to the X6 and have it be able to go lower if they want to...

SpectatorSpectator - 2/13/2009 12:55:07 PM

So with this vehicle BMW is basically saying the X6 was a mistake...and this is the answer.

And I agree with you dhkss2002 this quite literally take a strong step towards the Pontiac AssCrack design philosophy...with a little Toyota 'Pious' thown in for good measure.

BMW if you are worried about the midsize 5 door market...stick with the X5 and X6 and just flush the designs out a little more...dont try to build a 5 door sedan. I mean honestly, do you truly want to recreate the malibu maxx?!

Nope, the X6 is meant to be a coupe X5, or something along these lines.

I agree i think it looks good. People expect every new BMW to be a low super sporty car. The fact is not everyone wants a sports car, there will be a market for this, and it will be a success.

Audi has a better concept of the "Sportback" design theme. Sportbacks need to low and long to look elegant and have that performance vibe. This looks too much as Aztek.

First, it would have looked better in ANY other color. But the more I look at this, the less I see the point. If someone wants a 5 with more room, they'll buy the wagon. if they want the hight of an SUV and/or the 3rd row seats (for occasional use, they're fine), they'll buy the X5.

I actually see the point of the X6 more than I do of this car. If the X6 had come out 2 or 3 years earlier, it would have sold better. It's meant for the rich guy who commutes by himself or uses it on the weekend. All the investment banker asses who buy (bought?) Range Rover Sports, Cayennes, etc would have considered the X6. But this new car? I actually don't mind the concept, but it's a small niche at best, and they'll have to price it high to make money on it.

I think they can price this very competitively considering it utilizes the new 5 series and 7 series platforms, along with BMWs award winning engines that are used across the product range.

How would you like your TT I6? Heavy. Heavier. Even heavier. Or pointlessly heavy. And keep in mind that as they get heavier, they get more "exclusive", or expensive, for the layman.

this car wasn't actually designed by bangle himself.

" 'With no direct predecessor, it can't hurt to show it a little early," says freshly promoted BMW design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, the man behind the car's bold appearance.' " (Edmunds.com)

This is hardly a breakthrough design. 5-door liftbacks, sportsbacks, hatchbacks, whatever have been around in Europe for quite a while. The new Porsche Panamera is one such example, and I believe Audi is developing a 5-door A5 as well. However, many Americans associate this body with economy cars, thus high-end marques do not import this body style to the U.S.
The color of the car shown here is unusual. What would one call it - peach, champagne, pale salmon, what?
As to the actual styling, I am not impressed. The nose is too blunt. It does resemble the X6.
One interesting touch, though, is that 2-stage trunk lid.

Has any1 seen a porsche 4s gran turismo. It was a concept 2 years back and made it to production this year. This vehicle is a cheaper copycat and looks like an ugly betty in front of the original.

Hats off to BMW to take 2 years just to copy a design from your neighbour and claimin to form a new segment.

Something similar happened last year when they copied the infy ex and said they brought in a new segment with X6. Wake up guys, do u see a copy pattern here!
