Move Over Lexus And Mercedes! Hyundai's Equus Makes It's Korean Press Debut

Yesterday was a big and important day for the Hyundai Motor Company. The largest Korean car company has hosted an exclusive media eventat at its Namyang research and development center in South Korea, where it has unveiled its next generation flagship model, the 2010 Hyundai Equus sedan!

The all-new Hyundai Equus luxury sedan has been presented to more than 80 domestic journalists just two weeks ahead of its Korean debut, scheduled for March 3. Hyundai also used the event to pitch the 2010 Equus sedan against famous Mercedes-Benz S-class and Lexus LS sedan, both of them recognized as Equus’ main rivals.

To prove how serious the company is in gaining a foothold in the luxury car market, Hyundai allowed automobile writers to get behind the wheel of 2010 Equus sedan, test-drive it and compare it side-by-side with afore-mentioned luxury nameplates.

I would be the first person to admit that Hyundai's designs are derivative. However, Hyundai is foremost a business and they are in it to make money. They are executing their business strategy very well. If you were running Hyundai and had to answer to many stakeholders, including shareholders, what would you do to ensure the survival of the company? You must also take into account their position in the industry.

No, you are wrong, the 750i is like waaaay better than a tin can LS. It can never be surpassed by anything Japanese because it it naturally superior. It is simply fabulous and that' what all my cool friends tell me. Why are you even questioning this? Every cool person knows, just like me, I'm fabulous!! hee hee.

I guess you want to try and compare yourself to the best, but the bottom line is it's still a Hyundai. Until you seperate selling $8000.00 cars and $60,000+
cars in the same showroom, it just won't fly.

I'm sure Hyundai may have the egineering skills to a certain degree. But when it comes to styling they sure lack the originality dept!...Talk about stealing the mind set of the Secrets of Chinese Bootlegging with a no frills price, by taking the front end similar to a Toyota Crown, the side is somewhat MB CLS-ish with the touch of the bottom chrome accents of the LS460, and the rear end of the previous gen Acura RL with LS460 exhaust setup. I'm sure this will look real impressive in real life, but even though..."Get back to the drawing board!!!"...Not sure how Mercedes will "truly" respond to this. But it's time for Toyota respond with its' arsenal(just for shitz & giggles)to actually revise the Avalon(time to do something about this p.o.s.!!!) and put out the Genesis into it's place, based on luxury offerings, performance, and of coarse price, while the Toyota Crown or even the Toyota Century should do the same against the Equuss in all aspects. Neither MB or Lexus should not bother responding, or even worry about it...other than compliment well taken to be used as comparision!!!...LAMO!!!

I have been in the original Equus sedan in Korea and it was a comfortable ride none the less it was old and outdated, I am glad that they have redone it, the styling may not appeal to some but it is a HUGE step from the days of old.

I like it, and if the US Market was better I am sure it would be a hit

I don't see why all the hate on the Equus. This car has existed for quite a while as a RWD large luxury sedan in Korea and other nearby markets. And it isn't like they are saying it will sell in huge numbers. While I am sure there are some cars that will be better in some areas, it will be a nice car and likely undercut the others by thousands if not tens of thousands. If anything another competitor only means that the consumer has another choice, why hate on that?

91z4me91z4me - 2/17/2009 5:03:30 PM

No Kaner, I didn't say the Equus had to compete with a loaded S-class. If someone was looking at a moderately loaded E-class but wanted something with more room and features for the same money they COULD get the Equus. The choice belongs to the consumer and so long as the product is profitable then let the automaker make it without judgment. Quite frankly to many people here are over judgmental of others and should understand that in this day and age everyone should be able to choose as they please.

Kaner, you just don't get it do you? Not everyone has the money to shell out $90k on a car. Not everyone can afford a S-class. The Equus will be priced lower than the S-class and will likely offer as many or more bells and whistles. A person may be able to swing $55k for an Equus but not $90-100k for the S-class.

BTW I think the Audi A8 easily matches the S for top dog in the fullsize luxury category (also the Jag XJ has done well for itself in reviews despite being down on power thanks to its aluminum chassis). Nothing in this world has complete supremacy in any category for long, there is always a competitor coming or present.

Look at the exhausts, complete rip off of LS460. Headlights look exactly like S class and other front end details also match LS and S class. Side profile is also very similar to the rivals. Very unoriginal. Not impressed with styling at all.

But wasn't the original and the current LS a rip off the S-Class as well? So, why be a hyprocrit when Lexus has been ripping off everyone for the last two decades. They even build a pseudo-AMG/RS/M car to pretend that they have any level of sporting aspirations. If there is the ultimate knock-off brand, the Oscar easily goes to Lexus.

I wouldn't buy it even it's cheaper than Nissan Versa.

It's hard to imagine any premium car buyers want to get a bootlegged copy of a Mercedes.

Ugh... and I thought the whole flare around the Genesis was enough. Hyundai doesn't even deserve to be in the same sentence as Audi, BMW, Lexus, and/or Mercedes-Benz.

Until Hyundai [grows some balls and...] releases a half-decent luxury marque, I will refrain from classifying the Genesis and/or Equus as premium and/or luxury vehicles.

huu76, stfu. Okay, so the Lexus RX is considered best in class? What about the GLK? GLK outperforms the RX in many ways and still manages to keep a lower sticker price.

"No rebadging required? How about Hyundai grow some balls and dare to put their name on the car." You really are an idiot. Only an idiot would spend $96,000.00 on a Hyundai.

I see more creativity coming from the Audi department for Interior design. Sorry but this thing is just hideous in every single way.

Even if Hyundai straightened out the 'H', I still wouldn't spend money on it. Even if it was re-badged; I'd never buy it until exterior and interior styling are creative. Sorry but this thing is just awful.

...pass me my keys to my 7... oh yeah I won't need any keys to get inside. (Hyundai's don't do that.)

If you don't like Hyundai, fine. It doesn't concern me that much. However,

1. In Korea, the highest trim level will apparently sell for about 93K USD. Yea, it's expensive. But you know what? MB and Lexus are much more expensive than that in Korea.

2. If this thing comes over to US, do you honestly think it's gonna sell for 93K? I can't believe so many of journalists are posting that information as if that's the finalized price tag in US. 93K is in KOREA, where Equus is already an established prestigious car and is the best thing next to the import luxury cars. Now they want to challenge that idea with the new Equus, that's what's happening. It will be waaaay below 93k in US if it comes over. look at Genesis, it's quite a lot cheaper in the US than it is in Korea. More reasonable guess for the Equus' price in US would be about 40K for base and maxing out at 75K, which certainly does undercuts the competitors. (Yes, i do think they need to create a new marquee before bringing the Equus over)

3. Personally, yea, i think it 'burrows' quite a bit of styling cues from others. But the outcome as a whole looks very good/handsome to me. My guess is that they're going safe at first with derivative designs, but gradually (hopefully) they'll start evolving in a unique way. (kinda like Lexus at the beginning)

It's called currency. Care to find any other reasons why a fully loaded Genesis is just shy of $50,000 CAD?

I wonder if the Korean auto industry will surpass Japanese auto industry in 10 years time. It is perfectly not impossible, just like Samsung has beaten Sony in the electronics industry.
BTW, check out more of these Equus photos:

That is true; however, Sony is not doing well in the Korean market as it used to do before. Overall, Samsung leads the overall world market.
"In 2005, Samsung surpassed Japanese rival Sony for the first time to be rated as the new leading and most popular consumer electronics brand in the world by Interbrand" (Wikipedia).

Why on earth was this ever even incarnated. POS should have stayed on the piece of toilet paper it was probably first drawn on. $96,000 can buy me three Honda Accords (I'm sure the Accord outperforms this POS). At least Honda knows how to make the 'H' straight. Don't even give me any bullsh*t about the Genesis and how its so great and it won so many awards.

Funny it won the Canadian car of the year; It's RWD, and I've only ever see one on the road - and it was being test-driven by some 60+ former Buick owner. Hyundai needs to just chill... even if they did make a new brand... who would buy it? Audi still suffers the wrath witch Volkswagen placed upon it - what are people with common sense going to think about this?
