Chrysler says GM merger could be best option for survival
In its restructuring plan submitted to the Treasury late Tuesday, Chrysler LLC said that it believes that the “best option for the U.S. auto industry” would be a GM/Chrysler merger. Chrysler, which is also pursuing an alliance with Fiat SpA, said that consolidation among U.S. automakers and their brands is a strong way to sustain the auto industry.

Chrysler’s restructuring plan called for an additional $2 billion loan on top of its $7 billion loan request. General Motors, which asked the U.S. Treasury for an additional $16.6 billion, did not express any hint of...

I guess if they trim the fat (management and UAW included). I just wonder what the product line would be then. I mean they have alot to offer each other but there's so much fat to trim between the two of them.

A merger would really do nothing in the short-term other than create a lot of complexity and confusion. Seems to me that Chrysler is grabbing at straws.

Cerberus is just making Chrysler say this to try and get the rest of GMAC, which is all it wants anyways.

GM already has enough useless brands of their own.

If GM is pairing down to 4 brands then why jeapordize this by adding more brands and models. In a non economic turn down of the auto industry this might have worked. In today's climate it cannot work. Chrysler is simply dreaming now. It seems to me that the deal with Fiat will help them and help keep jobs. I hope the Chrysler/Fiat deal goes through. Chrysler gets to sell smaller cars and we get Alfa Romeo and Fiat back in the USA!!

This "could" work, but not in the short term.

Joining advertising, human resources, purchasing, some R&D, etc would save money across the board. If they were to join, Dodge would eventually get axed (sorry Ram & Challenger fans), Chrysler will be merged with Buick (if not axed altogether) and jeep would replace hummer. In other words, GM would liquidate Chrysler, killing Dodge & Chrysler and keeping Jeep.

Caution: Spin Doctors at work!

Cerberus proposes GOV'T CASH and a GM-Chrysler Merger.

What they are really saying to the US Gov't is:
1. You give us money
2. We give Chrysler to GM
3. We're OUTTA HERE!!!

... nice try guys!

I think Gm should be sold to Hyundai...Hell, they are producing some decent looking cars now. Gm needs help. I do like the CTS and the vette, but besides that. They can keep the rest of them.
