Hyundai's LS Killer Debuts, But Will The Equus Force Lexus Back To The Drawing Board?

Hyundai's LS Killer Debuts, But Will The Equus Force Lexus Back To The Drawing Board?
To create the best: That was the uncompromising objective for Hyundai Motor Co.'s VI Project design and engineering team. After ten years in the marketplace, the company's flagship sedan EQUUS would be retired and replaced by a new EQUUS, an import fighter that would need to compete on an equal footing with the most storied names in the luxury car business. Much had changed in the interim requiring a rethinking of the basic assumptions. It started with the adoption of a front engine, rear wheel drive architecture, the luxury segment's de facto standard, to achieve the ideal 52:48 front-rear weight distribution needed to achieve optimal ride and handling characteristics.

"Genesis showed the world what a great car we could build, but EQUUS improves on the Genesis in every measurable way," said Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, Vice Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of the Corporate Research and Development Division. "The VI (EQUUS) was a fun project: It was greatly satisfying to have absolute freedom to adopt the newest and the best technologies. For once, we weren't constrained by our usual design-to-cost approach to engineering and manufacturing," said Dr. Lee.

From design to execution, absolute excellence would be required on all levels if the new EQUUS was to meet the needs and wants of the target customers, a highly demanding group of top income earners, male executives or entrepreneurs in their 40s and 50s for whom cars serve as an expression of status. A majority of Korean luxury car customers had defected to Japanese and German luxury marques over the years, and winning back their trust in Hyundai posed the ultimate test of the new EQUUS. An entirely new set of technologies would be needed to attain first-class performance, safety, comfort and convenience.

The visual statement is one of elegance and luxury. The exterior lines are progressive, faithful to the original design concept. Viewed from the front, the impression is one of strength and confident power but with luxurious refinement evident in the details of the headlamp and grill design. A study of the side profile hints at a deeper dynamic, sporty personality but without compromising the sedan's overall grace and from the rear, perhaps the most commonly viewed angle, the emphasis is on balanced proportions for visual stability. LED rear combination lamps impart a dynamic, high-tech note.

The interior design concept is, in a word, sumptuous. A classical image welcomes the eye with a simplicity of form that is in balance with high-end IT details for a thoroughly modern interpretation of luxury. From the selection of exotic hardwoods for the crash pad and centre console to the supple leather upholstery of the seats, master craftsmanship and premium natural materials soothe the senses taking luxury motoring to a new level. EQUUS customers will have a choice of three interior colors with matching hardwood accents (Eucalyptus, Walnut or Burled Birch) while brushed satin aluminum trim will add a contemporary feel.

POWERTRAINS
EQUUS comes with a choice of two sophisticated engines: The Lambda 3.8 V-6 and the award-winning Tau 4.6 V-8. To maximize power while minimizing emissions and fuel consumption, both engines feature all-aluminum construction, continuously variable valve timing, variable air induction systems and are mated to six-speed transmissions. The Lambda V-6, good for 290ps (Note: Korea domestic standard, using regular fuel) and a peak torque rating of 36.5kg?m, delivers an impressive fuel economy rating of 9.4km/l. The Tau 4.6 V-8, named by Detroit-based Ward's Autoworld as one of 2009's Best Ten Engines, delivers 366ps and 44.8kg?m of torque with a fuel economy rating of 8.8km/l.

TRIM LEVELS
The 3.8 V-6 will be offered in four trim levels starting with the entry level 3.8 L. 3.8 GL and 3.8 GLS will add comfort and convenience features and V-6 range will be capped off by the 3.8 Top edition. Ruling the EQUUS stable as the most exclusive and best-equipped EQUUS of all will be the 4.6 Top.

SUSPENSION
Front and rear, EQUUS rides on 5-link suspension featuring lightweight aluminum control arms. Such a multi-link setup for both the front and the rear is uncommon in the industry but through a careful optimization of the wheel geometry and bushing characteristics, stability and ride quality were optimized. To improve shock control over the wheels, Hyundai worked in partnership with ZF-SACHS to develop Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD) which features an innovative relief valve, a design EQUUS shares with only one other car in the world, its luxury stable-mate Genesis. The air suspension is electronically governed to minimize body roll, nose-diving and other undesirable characteristics.

EQUUS also comes equipped with an Electric Parking Brake which is automatically released once the vehicle is put into drive gear and an Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering System which reduces fuel consumption.

SAFETY
EQUUS elevates driving safety to a whole new level with the introduction of Vehicle Stability Management which integrates the Lane Departure Warning System, Pre-Safety System, Third Generation Smart Cruise Control (SCC) and other sub-systems to provide unparalleled active and passive safety. Using smart optics, the Lane Departure Warning System issues an audible warning if the car deviates from the driving lane without signaling. SCC uses radar waves to automatically regulate the brakes and throttle and maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. If a collision danger is detected, the Pre-Safety System automatically applies the brakes, triggers a flashing warning light on the TFT-LCD which is followed by an audible alert and a vibration in the seatbelt harness. If a collision is unavoidable, full braking force is automatically applied and front seat belts are reeled in within a split second in order to maximize protection.

Another new safety improvement is the addition of a Knee Air Bag for the driver. With two front, four side and two side curtain airbags, this brings the total airbag count to nine.

Video cameras in the rear and front eliminate blind spots during parking and backing up maneuvers, reducing the risk of accidents while the new Parking Guidance System provides a computer graphic overlay on the display screen to assist the driver. High Intensity Discharge Head Lamps with Adaptive Front Lighting System varies the angle of the light beam according to the steering direction for safer driving.

COMFORT and CONVENIENCE
Whether driving or being driven, EQUUS surprises and delights as it opens up a new realm in motoring luxury. Heating, for example, is to be found in unexpected places-steering wheel, seat cushions and backrests- providing a welcome touch on a chilly day. On hot summer days, the seat cooling system and glove box drink chiller will be appreciated while the massage system in the rear seats relaxes and refreshes while en route.

EQUUS is also equipped with an advanced Driver Information System whose menus are accessible through touch-screen menus or jog wheel which has adjacent buttons for menu short cuts. DIS displays navigational maps, personal cell phone directories (downloadable via Bluetooth) and serves as the central control of the 17-speaker Lexicon Sound System. Logic7.1 is able to transform the EQUUS cabin into a veritable concert hall with surround-sound wizardry.

A 3.5-inch display nestled between the speedometer and the tachometer provides a rich variety of information displayed in colorful graphics using the latest Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) technology. From the tire pressure to the AV system and lane departure warning system, fifteen different vehicle functions can be monitored using this high-resolution color screen.

As the pinnacle of the Hyundai motoring experience, EQUUS, Latin for horse, retains its trademark winged emblem which captures the spirit of the fabled winged horse that has been mythologized in both the East and the West. Not only does the EQUUS name generate a high level of awareness in the minds of Korean customers but it also has strongly positive associations as a symbol of status and success. Because of the tremendous amount of brand equity accumulated in the EQUUS name over the past decade, Hyundai decided to retain the name for the Korean market but export badging remains to be finalized. Hyundai is now committed to expanding the EQUUS range to nurture it as the company's flagship model.

EQUUS has made its mark as Korea's top luxury sedan with sales of over 120,000 units worldwide since its launch in April 1999. While the first-generation EQUUS was not exported to North America and Europe it was sold in a very limited number of overseas markets (primarily the Middle East, China and parts of Asia) under the Centennial name. In view of the critical acclaim received by Genesis, feasibility studies are underway to expand exports of the new EQUUS worldwide, including North America and Europe. However, it could be 2011 or 2012 before all the necessary preparations are completed.

Built at the Ulsan Plant, EQUUS will arrive in Hyundai's Korean showrooms in March, 2009 when retail pricing and full technical details will be announced.

I love what Hyundai is doing lately, but if Lexus didn't put Benz out of business, isn't it silly to call this a "Lexus killer"?

Actually I think Lexus is the closest target to Hyundai right now due to price point. The EQUUS pretty much is a feature to feature lineup with the LS for the most part. Will they steal some of Mercedes and BMW sales? Yes I think so, but their target audience may not be as impressed with the lack of all out performance.

Many (not all) Lexus customers are less concerned with all out performance when they can get their buns warmed and back massaged for Tens of thousands less. Price is a big factor to many Lexus customers and this is where the EQUUS may shine in comparison.

Not silly at all to call this a Lexus killer. Mercedes S-class and Audi A8 are still at the top so this will probably end up as number 3 in desirability over Lexus whatever rank that miserable brand may hold. I say miserable because I have not yet gotten over the fact that the LWB version of the big LS ended up with a reclining lounge rear seat on one side only while the Maybach from Benz has two such rear seats. I first started to hate Lexus when they moved the spare tire on the RX from a proper wheel well inside the vehicle to underneath the vehicle where it would pick up all the winter mud and salt. Moreover, the matching alloy spare rim became a silly steel wheel. I sincerely hope that Lexus mends its ways on the 2010 model RX.

no, that is JUST your biased view. what they are doing is BORROWING from the lexus playbook.

if they TRULY wanted to compete head-to-head with lexus, they would set up a separate sales channel, with upscale showrooms and a more exclusive luxury ONLY line. the equus is even cheaper than the genesis, so they are actually going in the opposite direction.

Doubt that it will "kill" Lexus but can agree with the fact that with this new competition, it will definitely shake things up at Lexus.

Oh and Teknik: we don't need Agent 009 to "post anything negative about BMW" because we know that you will spend hours either searching for negative BMW press of creating your own "is Audi gonna kill BMW?" posts.

I have posted many not so glowing BMW articles as well.

As for all of the Audi press as of late. Well quite simply, they are one of the few at this time actually bringing new models to the market and can boast of them. If you need a prime example take a look at Lexus revamp of the IS for 2009. Probably took the designers all of 2 days to complete.

Most of the other Marques are simply sitting on their thumbs praying they can weather the storm intact.

why does it seem Hyundai is avoiding to put "Hyundai" on these new cars. There is no "H" in the grill or steering wheel or the name on back of car...IF they are going to make it a different brand sell the cars in a different show room...What ever that bird looking symbol they using now is gross...These will be nothing more then glorified Hyundai's...They might sell a couple now but once the economy comes back together people will go right back to MBenz, BMW, Lexus and Infiniti..

Equus has had that birdy logo since like 10 years ago when the previous Equus came out in the Korean market. Genesis also has a different logo in Korea. It even had a different logo for Dynasty sedan. When the Korean Azera (Grandeur) first came out, for a few months it also had a different symbol on the hood (it now has the H logo to unify the brand image with export models). Kia Amanti (Opirus) and Borrego (Mohave) have different logos too in the Korean market. It is nothing new that some Korean cars have individual logos. Moreover, the Equus featured on the above photos are Korea Domestic Market (KDM) version. If Equus reaches the U.S., it may have a H mark (although I am not totally sure). I have also heard that the export version of Equus will be called the Genesis Prestige.

Actually the 7 Series is selling very well if I'm not mistaken behind the S Class. Could Audi sell more A8's I don't think so. I'm glad to see a car of this caliber and the less the more special. Is Audi beginning to out sell BMW and Mercedes, yes (in Europe) The point a single car doesn't make a complete company. Give Hyundai more time, we will see a lot like it or not.

Wow, these guys really seem to be dialed in right now. Hyundai is taking the same blueprint that Lexus used to become successful more than 20 years ago and setting their sights on Lexus as the best luxury product. Good for them, looks like this vehicle is going to make some big in roads for Hyundai and in the current economy perhaps a larger 'value' in the Flagship segment is something that will be appealing for people moving up. Great looking vehicle and performance specs seems to stack up. Lexus killer NO. Best Korean vehicle yet. YESSIR

Why not? Lexus has taken sales from Mercedes and BMW as we know. The new economy allows individuals new opportunities to look at luxury in areas never look at before. Lexus had the same successful plan 20 plus years ago. It is ignorant to think otherwise in the case of Hyundai. The Sonata and Genesis is proving as much.

Most people are loyalist to their particular brands and will make certain sacrifices to stay loyal to that brand be it Merc,Lex,BMW,Aud,Infi,Acu,Cad etc. Folks usually don't hop brands unless they have had overwhelming bad experiences with that product and most folks are very image conscience. Not to mention how the top 5 brands have dominated the market for at least a couple of decades now.

For those believe that Toyota isn't any more prestigious because it has big "L" as their logo, shouldn't have problem giving this car a chance. If I ever decided to step away from German car, and it looks like this year could be it, I don't have problem getting flagship Hyundai if price is cheaper and quality is up there with glorified Toyota/Nissan.

Of course given these day's economy, I'll give Cadillac first chance win me over with their offerings but I'll include Hyundai along with Lexus and Infinity as my places to stop by.

Hyundai needs to come up with their own look and avoid being derivative in their design. That said, the most disappointing part of Hyundais are their interiors. I have driven enough Hyundai rental cars to know that the switchgear in Hyndais feel cheap. The other thing are the vertical vents. They make the interior seem narrow for some reason. They are too generous on the wood. Wood should enhance, not dominate the interior. They should go back and copy some of the 1970 and 1980 Mercedes interiors and modernize them. There is something about the simple elegance of the German designs from back then.

You don't know one thing though. All the Sony LCD are made by Samsung. Do some research. Sony can not compete with Samsung anymore.
Samething will happen to Toyota soon. Hyundai is catching up too fast.

Lexus LS Killer? ...Call me when Michael Jackson restores his original pigment.
This thing must be a serial killer; R.I.P. my eyes.

NO ONE is likely to make a lexus killer. at least not without pouring as much money into an upscale channel.

having MADE that investment, and in view of the fact that even 'lowly toyotas' have a first class reputation for RELIABILITY and value, toyota corp is exploiting it to the fullest. they will always keep lexus as a premium brand, and let the Toyota brand duke it out in the lower ranges.

this is why you'll likely never see anything less than a v8 in the LS, and at least a v6 in just about every other lesser lexus. (the only exceptions being the diesel Four IS for the euro market, and tne new lexus hybrid.)

this will become all the more remarkable as the euro brands stretch downmarket with Fours and A-class vehicles. the Toyota brand can and will handle battles in this arena.

Huu76,

Your retardness...is.....just...........
Samsung is actually doing opposite to Sony. Samsung will never give up latest technology to Sony. Japanese companies gave up competing with Samsung long time ago. By the way, how could you even compare LCDs to brakes? LCDs are more like engines and trannies to TVs.

Listen to other people sometimes, and understand your mind retardness.

HS, you make the common mistake of equating recalls with reliability. most toyota recalls were for inspecting and POSSIBLY replacing sub-par parts, provided by outside suppliers. this is due to toyota (like all car makers) trying to cut costs, going to cheaper suppliers.

generally replacing a sub-par part is a ONE SHOT deal; long term reliability is not affected. which is why CR does not even consider recalls in their overall reliability ratings.

i'll acknowledge that my '03 toyota has some cheaper parts than my '94. but both are still rock-solid reliable. and to date, other than replacing normal wear and tear components, i have put ZERO dollars into repairs. there have been NO failed parts. ZIP. (you'd be hard pressed to find another owner of a 15-yr old vehicle able to make that claim.)

what is going to make this the LS/S-class killer is it's price.. if it is priced to ridiculously affordable... then i'd say its going to be a hot shot

We'll have to see in-person what the quality of the car is like. There is absolutely no reason someone looking into an S class or LS would not consider a Hyundai if the quality is on par if not better. It would be foolish to throw money away and people will see it as such if the car lives up to the hype.

Hyundai must be doing something right, sales are up, other car companies like to use their engine blocks, and they are not threatening bankruptcy. So, while some of you pick Hyundai apart, the fact is they're selling cars and making money ...... Props to Hyundai.

it mite compete against the Avalon. nowhere will it challenge the LS.

all LS lexi are V8 powered. no pretender with just a v6 will challenge it. even if it has the optional v8, few will know it does NOT have the v6.

part of the prestige of the LS is that ALL of 'em come with only a v8. (except the LS600, which has the v8 PLUS electric motors.)

The arch over the rear wheels is pure Hyundai (see Elantra, Azera, and Gen. Coupe), the upright fog lights with the dipped chrome trim above them on the front bumper is all Hyundai (See Gen. Sedan and Coupe), the grille is all Hyundai (See XG models), the chrome line above the side sills is all Hyundai (See Gen. Sedan).

The rear is really the only place with derivative design: taillights similar to Maxima (which are themselves derivative of the older Acura RL), the lower bumper with its exhaust outlets is nearly identical to Lexus LS (which is also the similar as the Bentley CGT, derivative of the Acura TL, and existed as a ricey mod for Civics for decades.)

C'mon, people. Seriously, give credit where credit's due. This is a nice looking car (the pic above shows it looks way better than the S), and it's as original as any other design you can get considering it's just a three box design. Let's not forget what happened when Acura tried to get inventive this time around?

Acura-Killer, Lincoln-Killer, Caddy-Killer, sure. Lexus-Killer? Maybe more just Lexus-Fighter . . . which is just where Hyundai wants to be. No one but Huu (who's pretty much lost all credence on this board) has really scoffed at Hyundai and Lexus being said in the same sentence. That's saying a lot. The company's only exported to outside markets for, what, 30+ years? This is Hyundai forging its "heritage."

I do agree, though, that there's no place for the V6 in a car of this level . . . unless it's supercharged.
