We Told You This Was Going To Happen! Genesis Coupe Defeats The G37 In First Head On Test

The list of six-cylinder sport coupes that actually matter is a short one. Let's face it, until now it's been BMW 335i and Infiniti G37. And then, about two weeks ago, Hyundai dropped a bomb. A big one.

It's called the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

And all of a sudden, the Korean carmaker — whose previous attempts at "sporty" included machines like the unenviable Scoupe and the forgettable first-generation Tiburon — has thrust itself into the spotlight with a car that at once looks good and has the specs to do the deed. Three hundred horsepower. Six-speed manual transmission. Rear-wheel drive. Limited-slip differential. So put that in your Scoupe pipe and smoke it. Here comes a real car.

Won't these flame titles ever cease at Autospies?

Here's what the article says. It's a value proposition.

The Rest of the Story
It's the undeniable value equation that tips this test in the favor of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8. You simply get more car for your dollar with the Genesis coupe. Sure, it's not as much car as the 2009 Infiniti G37, but at two-thirds the cost, it doesn't have to be.

Plus the Hyundai effectively opens up the sport coupe arena to a new buyer — one who isn't prepared to drop the better part of $50 large on a car but wants the looks and most of the performance of the big players. And that, friends, earns the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 a spot on anybody's short list of possible purchases.

Guess I am still missing the point when the article states that it does not handle as well as a G37, or that the VQ engine is better with its higher tach, or that it is a lot slower, or if you shift the Genesis aggressively it cuts off the fuel, or where they stated the Genesis is not the car the G37 is. If I had a choice, there is no doubt the G37 is the better choice here. As stated by most car fanatics here already, the Genesis is a nice coupe for someone who can't quite afford a G37 or 3 series, but see no since in trying to put this car into a battle with the G37 and 3 series, because it can't compete with them. I think Hyundai did a great job of making a product to compete against the Eclipse, Mustang, and Soltice, which is where their sales will come from.

It is the sum of all parts. The same can be said tof the earlier M3 models. Might not win every stat, but when put together it all adds up as a better package.

For instance the G37 wins in all out braking. But the brakes are grabby in everyday use, making them error prone. So while it stop from 60-0 quicker the tendency to over compensate going into corners is out weighed by errors it creates.

It is the total package that matters more than a series of static tests.

The original G35 was placed up against the likes of 3 series, but couldn't get close enough. The Genesis is designed to perform and take sales were ever it can. If the specs and design goes after a luxury brand and succeeds, then it is what it is. Don't hate.

I would spend the extra for the 335i over the G37 but not the extra for the G37 over the Genesis Coupe.

BMW will be slightly tougher for Hyundai but if anyone can do it...

Actually it won't be the Genesis Coupe that dethrones the 3 series but a sportier version of the Genesis sedan.

it would be rare to overthrow BMW on the first attempt. The G37 is lower hanging fruit. Tests well in the static tests, but is not as good as a cohesive package in comparison.

Gen Coupe is for people looking for value and don't really care about their image.

G37 Coupe is for people who hate 335i because they can't afford it, and they think that infiniti is a prestigious brand.

335 Coupe is for people who love to drive.

I switched from BMW's to Infini's in 2004, My first was the G35 sedan, then the Coupe with 6MT... Hurricane IKE took my G35 so I now drive a G37s Coupe 6MT. I could drive an AMG if I wanted, pric eis no object but rather save and enjoy my $ in other ways; so your wrong, we Drive the G37 because we want to; I personally drive infiniti because I was tired of having my BMW's in the shop. I put over 100,000 miles on my G35 with absolutely no problems, the only trips to the dealer were for scheduled mainenance and I always had a sweet loaner waiting.
G37s 6MT rules!

335 Coupe is for people who can't afford an M3.

And M3 is for people who can't afford a GT3.

Gen Coupe gets the 335 job done without the need to pay $20k to make up for inadequacies. Plus better warranty, gas mileage, reliability, and exclusivity.

You are wrong. Ex. I chose the 335 Coupe over M3 Coupe because I don't want the attention and I don't need the horsepower. There's no need to mention cars that are not in this article.

And Gen Coupe doesn't "gets the 335 job done". Go test drive a 335i at your local BMW dealer and you will know why.

The article indicates that the G37 is slightly better in driving characteristics but "only slightly".It does have slightly better interior controls and better interior plastics. The Genesis has better seats. The G37 is a half a second quicker to 60 and does 1 MPH better in the slalom. Further the Genesis does have that engine cut off to protect against over revving that the G37 does not have. So you have to conclude that the G37 is a slightly better driving car overall. The question is this.Is the G37 worth a 3rd more then the Genesis coupe? The answer has to be a definate "NO".The Genesis Coupe is an amazing effort for Hyundai and does apparently compete with the G37 even if it loses. It's got to be the best bang for the buck.

This is the same thing the Nissan Fanboy's latch on to in these comparison tests........the 335i is a better car in performance, quality, materials etc. just more expensive.

Now the Nissan faces the same type of challenger and they are raising hell.

Hypocrisy?

9/10 times, the more expensive vehicle is going to be a better vehicle naturally, to command the price premium. Why is that so hard to comprehend? You can go to Smith Wollensky steak house or outback, you tell me which is a better steak....now it's up to you to figure out if it is worth the price premium.

The Genesis Coupe has a LOT of trade offs vs the G37. If you don't have the money ... guess what? You go with the Genesis, its a good car for the cash, but not great. If you can cover the costs and "step it up", then Infiniti is the way to go or BMW / Merc for that matter.

Hyundai just got my respect with the recent offerings. It sounds like they still have few minor things to work out, but that gap between Japanese aren't that big as it used to be. I was not, and still not fan of Hyundai but let's just say I am becoming a fan of Genesis.

No surprise here. The G37 is a POS and every car enthusiast knows it. It's obvious that it doesn't take much to beat a glorified Altima and Hyundai apparently knows that.
And for the butt hurt Infiniti cheerleaders, stop trying to associate BMW with the the Asian trash. The level of engineering in a BMW is 25 years ahead any Asian brand.

I wouldn't say Infiniti is a pos, but I would say that German engineering has finally met it match. Too many manufactures are slowly catching or surpassing them, before you know it, Hyundai and the Chinese will dominate the market, like it or not. No institution stays on top for ever. Engineering is not limited to individuals or group. That is the beauty of capitalism.

All I hear is how the Japanese offer a percentage of what the Germans offer with their cars, for a lower price. face it, the Japanese imitation is ALWAYS the cheaper, more bland version of the unequaled, incredible piece of German engineering.

As for Koreans they imitate what it is easier to imitate...Japanese engineering. German engineering is so out of reach for all Asian engineers. I can only wish them good luck in their attempts to make better copies of the fabulous German masterpieces though. LOL.

Wow, can't believe people argue of stuff like this. At the end of the day the Genesis is a new version of the Tiburon, it is a nice car that will compete against the Eclipse, Mustang, Soltice, etc. The G37 outperforms and looks like a sports car. In the end a true car enthusiats will always favor the ultimate performer, in this case being the G37. The Genesis coupe will do well in the tuner high school and college world. Good job Hyundai, but please stop trying to compete in an arena in which you are obviously outmatched.

Am I the only one that thinks naming this probably nice car a Genesis is crazy?

The 4 door Genesis is a nice priced luxury car. This thing which looks nothing like it at all and certainly has a way different karma has the same name! Cheapens the four door IMHO.

G37 coupe and 4 door - same car except for number of doors - at least they look like siblings
Genesis coupe and 4 door - don't even look like same brand.

WTF - Names are cheap why mis-use one?
