CNN calls new Mercedes R-Class great!

'Land yacht' is such an ugly term. It brings to mind the pointy-fendered Kojak-mobiles of the 1970s with swimming pool-sized hoods. But it really is the best term I can think of to describe the new Mercedes-Benz R-class.

In a Mercedes R-500, with shades drawn back from the stem-to-stern sunroof as I piloted down the New Jersey Turnpike toward Philadelphia, the warm sunlit feel inside the cabin reminded me of nothing else as much as a restful cruise in a sailboat.

Except that I was surrounded by the New Jersey Turnpike.

The R is roomy like a large SUV -- it even has a third row you can actually use -- but it handles more like a car. Well, like a limousine, perhaps.

It has great features, but regardless of how much chrome you put around the front bumber, it's still a MINIVAN!

If you want a REAL "Sport Tourer", as the MB people deliriously call it, then what you really want is an Audi Q7. It will have much the same features, a panoramic skyroof, entertainment system, rear passenger ammenities, room for 7, bla, bla, bla, ... PLUS off-road capability, great for ski vacations, bigger and nastier wheel/tire package and most of all much nicer styling. The Q7 would NEVER be confused with a MINIVAN regardless if you call it a "Sports Tourer", "Sport Activity Vehicle" or whatever.

... and, NO, MB has not created something different with the new R-Class. It's only made a Chrysler invention much more expensive.
