February 2009 - Luxury Car Sales
Who were the winners and losers this month in luxury car sales? The new Mercedes-Benz GLK has gotten off to a very strong start, surpassing everything in the cute-ute category by a large margin. Infiniti's EX comes in at a distant second place. The Lexus GS, Audi A6, and Cadillac STS have dropped off dramatically. Infiniti sold almost twice as many M models than Lexus's GS. The 3-Series and 5-Series continue to dominate their class. The Acura TL has slightly picked up in sales, but still well behind the leaders. The S-Class came out on top this month in the flagship category. 7-Series sales are almost non-existent, considering there is a new model on sale soon.

It's the value equation, for some value comes in first place.

Because in America the average car buyer thinks Acura is a premium brand and to them it looks like a bargain considering the lower price tag. What this idiots don't realize is that what they get is an overpriced European spec 4 cylinder Accord. Value buy? Nope... quite the opposite of that.

Not surprised to see that the GS is selling like sh1t. I'm glad the M is doing quite well still, even in this model's last year.

My neighbor just bought a GLK. I LOVE IT. What a fun SUV to drive. It is also more georgous in person than in pictures. If I had not bought a SUV last year I would heavily consider it.

GLK - is really an awesome car,SUV.
X3 just looks cheap and uglier
EX is too small and looks like that Nissan Rogue thing
RDX - ugly like every other Acura right now
Q5 looks like cheap VW suv

yeah, they only sold 10 of a 2008 model that is non-existant on dealer lots because they stopped building it six months ago. OMG BMW MUST SUCK!!!! But hey, feel free to not apply any logic or common sense to the figures -- why start now, right? You wouldn't want to set a precedent where people expect things you say to have any viable meaning or value.

maybe if BMW weren't so wrapped up in such shady and greedy business practices and respect the buying public more, I might give them more respect... until then, I'll continue to think of them as BlasphemousMotorizedWrecks

buddy, I couldn't care less what you think of them. I don't even care why. I'm just putting the stupid thing you said into context for casual readers who might not realize they shouldn't put any weight into anything you say. When I respond to you it's not about you, it's for everyone else.

Sector, I'm going to give you (and Teknik and even the jackass who calls every BMW the "[insert model] Mini Cooper", as if being being called a Mini Cooper is an insult) the benefit of the doubt that you're not actually stupid. In fact you probably actually already knew BMW stopped building the 2008 7-Series in August of last year, and by using even a smidgen of common sense that it's likely seven months later there are almost none left to buy. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not stupid, not ignorant, and already know all that. And if that is true, then all the BS you post is just because you're petty and/or insecure. Which is fine. But don't sit there and think you're above anyone, and definitely don't think anyone cares. Because again, when we respond to you, it's not about you. It's about keeping you from making anyone else as stupid as you pretend to be. The moderators on this site apparently won't do it, but the enthusiasts who use the site can.

JRob, you need to relax, why so passionate by BMW.. got personal interest in it or somethin? you should know every automaker on this site is fair game for ridicule.. just ask the kids (or adults with the mental capacity of a kid)... Star and EL34.

yeah, I new they stopped production for retooling for '09s, but isn't that obvious? you need to give readers of this site more credit, and I'm sure they can read english... as the article above indicates " 7-Series sales are almost non-existent, considering there is a new model on sale soon."

but still, that doesn't account the hundreds of leftover '08 as indicated by autotrader... the gap in sales is just too large between Benz/Lexus/BMW.

I believe it's safe to call the 2009 A4 a bust. Once you take out the cabriolets and leftover 08's, you're left with about 2000 sales in Jan and Feb. 8th or 9th on the list for a brand new model!!!!

why is the mercedes S-class outselling the LS even though it costs 30% more?

hmmm...because S-class buyers are not 65 year old value shoppers. there are still plenty of people in the world with money--and they're not buying lexuses.

hey david 969.

would you compare camry sales to ES sales? same proportionate price difference between an S-class and LS. and those cars are actually comparable because they're on the same platform and are bascially the same car.

so the ES must really suck because the camry outsells it 10 to 1 right?

It appears that S class Mercedes just passed Lexus LS in sales in US. Clearly the economy affected the poorer Lexus LS buyers a lot more than it affected the Mercedes S class buyers. I guess is time for all the accountants and grocery store managers to sell their LS and go back to their old Camry.

As expected the Japanese got beat by the Germans in every single category except of course for the category that doesn't exist... where a big fluffy 4 door 4 cylinder econo sedan priced under 30K(Acura TX)competes apparently with a compact premium sport coupe from BMW priced up to $20K higher than the lowly Euro spec Accord. Who shops for a 1 series BMW and an Acura??? Let's get real.

So I guess if Cadillac had a proper "Entry-level" competitor, the CTS would be in the "Mid-level" category and that would mean it would be the best selling right??? (Sales of 3,259 would put it at the top of that list)

http://www.bmw.ca/ca/en/insights/special_offers/special_offers1.html"

funny, I notice you didn't mention that was for 2008 models. Way to leave out the fine print there. If you think Toyota doesn't have money on the hoods of leftover 2008 Lexus models just like BMW and EVERYONE else, you really are as ignorant as you constantly make yourself out to be. Even I didn't think that was possible, and trust me, I have the bar set very low for you.

What category is that Hue? The TSX is nothing more than an Accord and belongs in the same category as the Camry, Mazda 6, Malibu. Their sales should match those of the cars I just mentioned. They don't though because the Acura TSX(euro Accord) is a flop in its own category. They needed to make up a bogus category and put a mainstream economy car like the Acura sedan next to specialty vehicles that never sell in big numbers like the 1 series BMW(sport premium coupe) in order to explain their poor sales. How desperate is that?

StarStar - 3/6/2009 5:58:43 PM

I posted this in the Audi sales thread, but it's probably more relevant here, so I'll post it again. btw, I'd love to know why it got deboosted...unreal.

Does anyone know how many dealers of each brand there are in the US? I know Automotive News used to print (this was pre-internet) either the total number of dealers of each brand occasionally, or the number of units sold per dealer. I would think this is a pretty important statistic. of course there are a lot of variables, but if it takes 300 dealers to sell 80,000 Brand X per year and 2,000 dealers to sell 100,000 Brand Y, obviously Brand X is going to have much more profitable dealers.

I think this is an important point that gets left out of a lot of these discussions.
