German New Car Sales Are Up 21.5% For February! Should We Follow Their Lead?
Scrappage incentives in Germany helped to lift the February car market there by 21.5%, year-on-year. However, a JD Power analyst told just-auto that manufacturer incentives on top of the government scrappage incentive also played a part in the sales surge.

The German auto industry body VDA said that car sales in February reached 278,000 units - the best February in a decade.

The VDA also suggested that new car registrations in Germany this year could reach 3m units.

Car buyers in Germany receive an EUR2,500 bonus towards a new car if they trade in a car over nine years of age.

Scrappage was part of the actual article, not my typo there.

Though I have my fair share of typos I must admit.

And to answer your question there is not a spell check option.

To hell with this high-mileage crap. They should have the tax incentive here in the USA for any of our vehicles. For god's sake, the Big3 need to sell PROFITABLE vehicles. To hell with this "environmental" nonsense, the economy is a shambles. All vehicles are already clean, go check the EPA/CARB emissions standards. Enough with this "automobile CO2" is causing global warming nonsense. Even the biggest of SUVs (Yukons / X5s / Sequoias) are getting great mileage considering what they used to get a few years ago & considering that you're moving 5000lbs+ of metal.

Also, does Germany have a "german car" (or "euro" car) requirement? Does this incentive include toyotas too? Does anyone know?

Yes, the auto industry is a global industry, but it's Detroit thats really suffering and to hell with everyone else, we gotta get sales for our new investments (Big3). only thing is we have to be careful not to be overly protectionist, possibly $3000 for Detroit Vehicles and $1000 for everyone else.

Agreed, pro WW2, Germany is one of the best nations on Earth....only switzerland and maybe an enclave or 2 are up on my list.....Germany also had the most number of cities in the Top 10 best cities in the world while USA struggled to get a couple even in the Top 50.

Germany:

Awesome country but like most of Europe, incredibly expensive. Whenever I travel through Europe my thoughts are always something like:

"A nice deli sandwich... probably 2-3 euros right.... HAHA, no. Try 6-7 euros" --- (and it could be a bad/not-fresh sandwich)

or

"Im thirsty, how about a bottle of coke (look as price.... GASP) WHOA, 2-3 euros for 500ml!?!?!??!"

Well, if it wasn't for Britain the world will be speaking German now and there would be no Jews.
Russia (manpower) and America (funds) shouldn't be forgotten along with of course British bombing, Spitfires, Royal Navy . . . Anyways, cars any one ... By the way the awesome P51B Mustang American Planes had Rolls Royce Engines which gave them great performance....esp. since the american allison engines were crap.
Surprising that Germany is so much better in standards of life and infrastruction than Britain or America now....

Techgeek, I wish I could say the same about British cars. We might be free from fascist megalomaniacs but we're still not free from mediocre British engineering. I will however give you Rolls Royce Engines, even though they're mostly on passenger airplanes.

By the way, we would speaking German right now if it wasn't for the AMERICANS. I'm sorry but Britain didn't have a crying chance in WWII if we didn't come to their aid.

Since you started E36er, let me tell you something : I absolutely understand your point of view, I have heard your line many times ( who did you pick it up from ? ).

You prolly have not learnt ( obviously in the great american education system which teaches about the entire world and not just America and which Obama wants to improve so badly ) that Britain won the Battle of Britain ( First ever entire war in the skies ) by itself even though it was heavily outnumbered by the German Luftwaffe, beat both the Germans and Italians air divisions badly and put an end to Hitler's dream of invading Britain ( operation sealion ), which is why Hitler turned towards the Eastern Front aka Russia. And Britain also totally smashed Germany and Italy in Africa where none of the countries could gain a strong hold. This was in 1940 and when exactly did America enter ? Towards the end of the War ? Why - Cuz Japan attacked Pearl Harbor or cuz we wanted to SAVE Britain ( quoting you ).....?

And you def. need knowledge about cars if you want to make a point. British cars :-
LOTUS ( Did I mention best handling cars in the world, every manufacturer asks for their help, sometimes even Ferrari, yes ! )
McLAREN ( Did I say longest record holder for fastest production car )
JAGUAR ( Indian owned but no made in India part in it, so still British )
ROLLS ROYCE ( Owned by the Germans, so what ? Still hand built at Crewe in England by Real English people in tweed coats who drink tea with crumpets )
BENTLEY
ASTON MARTIN ( Out of American Hands and owned by Prodrive which is British )
LAND ROVER/RANGE ROVER - Best vehicle off road period, despite electrical issues, Hummers and Jeeps ain't more reliable either....all serious offroaders are crude to an extent anyways.

And the fastest and best handling hand built cars in the world come from Britain too, like the Caparo T1, Barabus TKR, Ultima GTR, Bristol fighter etc.

Please dont forget England and Britain are not the same......BRITAIN = England + Scotland + Wales + N.Ireland

Did I mentioned Formula-1 is actually a British sport ?
We all know it isn't as great as Nascar......I mean c'mon F1 only has Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and other SMALL GUYS.......

It is boisterous Americans like you who make all of us Americans here in Britain and mainland Europe look like freaks...No one will like you when you go on boasting how great you are and what all you have done for the world. All of us are not the same...Just get along. All the allies lost lives and therefore putting one nation up does injustice to the others. Soviet Russia lost so many people, they brought around the turning point by chasing the Germans back into Germany after severing their supply like and kicking their ass in their own country, making the "Hunter" actually the "Hunted".

GOD BLESS AMERICA & GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

Now where the hell is The Sailor when you need his smartness...

A lot of countries and people were involved in defeating Nazi germany... remove any one of them from the picture and things probably would not have gone as well as they did, so singling out any one country and saying "if it weren't for X we would all be speaking German right now" may be true to an extent, but it is also somewhat misleading as it was much bigger than any one country.

Thanks all for the history lesson. Now getting back to the subject at hand "Scrap Incentives",I think they make sense if you buy GM,Chrysler and Ford you should get a $3,000 government backed incentive towards a new car(Chrysler,GM,and Ford if you trade in your 9 yr old car.I think it should be available for the next 2 yrs. Further if you trade in a large SUV you should get a $4,000 government scrape incentive towards a smaller car. I think it would spur buying.

Damn, thats a lot of WWII info but thanks for it anyways.
Without America, the allies prolly would have won somewhere around 1950.
Back to question at hand, great policy by Germany though. I will be seeing a lot newer cars there the next time I go.
And oi TechGeek you forgot to mention some awesome british cars like the Radicals and the Ariel Atoms, etc. There are some crazy TVRs and UK designed Rally Cars ( Prodrive etc. ) as well.

@TeckGeek: you should also remember that Britain´s army only survived the Battle of Dunkirk by evacuation some months before the air battle because Hitler hesitated to extinct the british army....

Reason? Look at wikipedia:

"Another theory was that Hitler was still trying to establish diplomatic peace with Britain before Operation Barbarossa so the Germans could have an potential allied force against the Russians."

The military technique used in Germany at this time was far beyond the equipment in all other countries and even helped more than 20 years later the US to fly to the moon.

Tom43, I beg to differ - You mean the jet engines which were invented by UK anyways and were stolen by German spies and the radar etc as well....so it was British technology which made space travel possible rather than German technology ?
And why did Hitler not want a bloody battle with Britain when he was fighting for the so called Pure Aryan race ? Did it not make sense for him to go on the eastern front and kill slavs and jews from Russia and East Europe, whom he did not like ?

PS = Has anyone not told you yet that Wikipedia is not a reliable source to back up facts. Anything can be pasted on there.

Thanks.
