Infiniti Essence coming in 2010

Infiniti Essence coming in 2010
The 2009 Geneva motor Show has seen the Nissan luxury brand making waves all over Europe there are not signs that the Japanese automaker is slowing down. It all started with the unwrapping of the stunning Infiniti Essence Concept, a 2-seater rear-wheel-drive coupe with a turbocharged V6 gasoline hybrid system generating 600hp to match its show-stealing sheet metal.

Then the bombshell was revealed: Infiniti intends to shift its entire lineup to the hybrid system beginning with the M sedan in September of 2010. There are also reports going around that a model derived from the Essence concept will be coming out next year in the European market. Further reports say that Infiniti will give up its gas-electric hybrid setup in the Essence in favor of the diesel-electric hybrid system. Although details about pricing have not yet been released for the model but Nissan said that customers willing to purchase a diesel hybrid would be in the luxury class. Of course, in theory, a diesel-electric setup would be more economical than its gasoline-electric counterpart. There are plans already by Nissan to open a V6 diesel powerplant in its European crossovers in 2010, this could point to the powerplant we can expect in the Essence version.

i hope they put in a gas engine ( at least as an option) for U.S. market. there are many of people who like high revving engines.

I'm glad we are finally getting an Infiniti with some decent flame-surfacing. Don't worry my friends, I am sure that the production car won't have a front that looks like a hamster with its cheeks stuffed with nuts. I am happy they are keeping the catfish design language, however.

I don't disagree. I love it too, but there's a similarity. Like it or not, the Riviera (and I assume you're thinking of the last one made), I think, was one of the earliest cars to use swept back, cat's eye lights. It also had a flowing coke bottel shape that tapered towards the rear. It wasn't a perfect design, as it was marred a bit by its front drive proportions, but it was a very good one, and definitely underrated because of the Buick badge.

that's bottle, not bottel.

and I saw a Riv on the street yesterday, first time in a long time....and the cat's eye lights aren't really cat's eyes! I think I was thinking of the way the front end curves around to the sides, and the way the hood lines sweep back with the fenders rising up a bit from the hood lines to the side edges.

That's pretty dang ambitious, especially considering the current automotive climate. An entire lineup of hybrid cars? Even Lexus doesn't have that and it took them years to get to where they are with the hybrid models available. It took ten years of development in Toyota's before they put it in a Lexus. And unless Nissan has been hard at work, the hybrid system they'll use is Toyota's since that's what nissans use. That's putting a lot of eggs in one unprofitable basket with a technology that could be eclipsed by something else before their plan finishes. Good for you Infiniti for trying, but I'll believe it when I see it.

This is directed solely to STAR...

I understand that you adore everything that's German automobile, however I must say that you are slightly delusional. And here is my thinking...
I've had a privilege of owning a couple of MB and BMW and currently I own a 2008 911 turbo, by the way if you need a list of cars that I've owned, I will gladly provide it. Anyhow, back to what I was saying. Yes, German car's in general are great cars to drive. But if you don't mind, please define what a car should be? A car is a mean of transportation, that is to get you from point A to point B. That is the sole purpose of a car. Reliability, quickness, handling among other things are just attributes to that. Now if you are arguing that Japanese or for that matter Asia cars don't fit that bill and with a much better track record than any of the above mentioned carmakers, well that SIR, you are and idiot and obviously a very biased person. Now your counter argument could of course be that you are an enthusiast and hence your statement. Well, lets see! How many cars can outperform the GTR? Being that you are a car enthusiast, please enlighten me.

Thanks,
GL.

There is a reason why people pay a premium to have the daily experience of joy that BMW delivers. No maker is perfect and no one seriously makes a claim like that, but there are real differences and once you have had a rich variety of experience you can choose which brand attribute you value. For the BMW, Porsche, and Ferrari people they are Joy, Exhilaration, Precision, Connection, Control, and Performance. I have to say this concept captures the Essence of what Infiniti is trying to do very effectively, adding a more emotional tone to a performance vehicle relative to say a more mechanically derived BMW (see M1 concept). Man this shows us (or should) that these guys are serious about winning people over beyond the spec sheet and taking chances (like deviated color interior -- awesome BTW) with carriage style luggage by LV which clearly adds to the overall thoughtfulness of the concept. However, with all of this high praise I am offering, do we really think that Nissan will develop a niche vehicle like this in a market that could conceivably fall to sub 9 million annual units? I don;t think that is where they are going to be investing their money for the time being -- the devastated economy will unfortunately hurt we vehicle enthusiasts I;m afraid in the short term. We all have to get real, no one is buying anything right now; awesome cars included. Essence tops my Hope List however.
