GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Is It Time For BMW To Make Their 3-Series Sport Package More Unique?

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Is It Time For BMW To Make Their 3-Series Sport Package More Unique?
I remember the first time I saw the first sport package on a BMW 3-Series.

I loved the way they modified the car with the different lower body kit, wheels, seats and steering wheel.

The second I saw it, I said to myself that I would get it the next time I ordered a car.

Because it made the car look 'special' and set it apart from the regular 3's.

It also allowed me to have something different enough that everyone noticed that my car was unique, in comparison to the others driving around town.

But today, the sport package on the 3-Series is about as unique as seeing calamari or tiramisu on a restaurant menu.

You SEE it EVERYWHERE.

Seems like you never see a 3 without it.

Well, so much for being unique and special.

BMW then offered the even more unique 'Performance Package' on the last 3 that added alcantara and some really fine interior touches.

They sold every one they could make and to this day, people are searching them out on the used market and will pay a heavy premium to get one.

Which brings me to the point of this article.

The Roundel has been teasing us at auto shows (see article photos) with Tii package rumors and they even offer a cool performance package through their parts and service departments that harkens back to the one they offered as a factory option on the last 3.

Well, I've seen the parts and service one a few shows now but here is the problem.

When you have it put on at the dealer, in my opinion (and many other buyers), it's NEVER the same and when they make it a factory order item, it is ALWAYS cheaper.

We say it's time to take the performance package and start offering it as a factory option.

And we say they call it the 'M Sport PLUS' package.

We think there are quite a few people who would bypass the plain sport package and spend the extra dough to make their lower end model look more 'M' like.

Do you agree with us?

If it was an extra $2,000 over the price of the sport package would YOU go all the way and order your 3 that way?

I know I wouldn't have to think for more than a second before I told my dealer to add it to my order.

Think the 335i sport is great?

Well, a 335i M Sport plus would be even better.

Maybe BMW needs to take a page out of the MINI playbook and offer more factory customization from the factory?

Let us know if we're on to something here....

Other than the sill, the components looks right.

What's cheap is the rest of cabin, especially central console. WTH is that? Even new base 370Z looks better.

Those seats are incredible for track days. They work perfectly with four and five point harnesses and they hold you in place firmly and comfortably which is important for obvious reasons when you are driving a high performance car at the limit. The steering wheel is amazing. Among other things, it taps into the car's Dynamic Stability Control data to give you G-force measurements, it measures lap times, as well as sector times. It's an incredibly useful tool for the track enthusiast. Imagine a car company of top level engineers who are all driving enthusiasts - that's what BMW is. Is it even possible to ask for any more from a car company? I think not.

It's not too bad. I like the rims on it but it will never be a true "M" car.

At 30 i think i am a bit too Mature to want those add-ons to my vehicle, the Regular 335 M-Sports Package is sufficient for me.

Facelifting of the 3er has worked. By subtly retouching front and rear of the car they managed to get rid of this pre-lifting 3er awkward styling. In terms of appearance it's now much better poised to compete with the extraordinarily good-looking A4.

The E46 ZHP came with more than just "alcantara and some really fine interior touches." The engine was tuned to produce more HP, it had a revised suspension and a quicker steering rack (quicker than the M3, in fact), a revised exhaust system, new wheels, bodykit, and of course an interior treatment.

So if your asking should BMW offer that package (ZHP) again, then

HELL yes.

BMW listened and did add the factory built ZMP M-sport package to US bound 1,3,5 builds starting in January.

"Seems like you never see a 3 without it. Well, so much for being unique and special."

So by that statement, you are saying that BMW should not offer the sports pkg to everyone? What if everyone order the 3er with the sports pkg? Of course its going to be everywhere!

And when they make a "new" pkg and charge more for it, to make it unique, everyone says that its too expensive...

The issue with any/all BMW 3-series is market saturation, in other words: They've become as common-place as Accords/Camrys/Altimas/Malibus in most cities. There's absolutely nothing special, or impressive, about seeing a 3-Series (sport package or not), as it's just another compact car going about its business to most people now. I guess its the price a vehicle manufacturer has to pay to survive these days.

DaHarder,

was the 3 series BMW suppose to be anything else than a common car? It is(and always was) the main choice for the car enthusiasts around the globe, in the same way Japanese cars(like Nissan/Infiniti, Toyolex) are the choice of the uneducated plebs.

So many have been accused of copying BMW in recent years. Hmmmmm...who's copying who now??...Alot of these add-ons cheapen the 3-Series. What's the point? It's near perfect the way it is...leave it be.

With sport package or not this is the ultimate car in its segment. This is the car that the Japanese engineers wish they could build. This is the car the Japanese fanatics secretly wish they could drive.

With the current economic crisis, not really.

If people really are that concerned maybe they should just buy the M3.
