BMW 750i World's First Full Test by Insideline: The 7-series is a Bargain!

BMW's all new flagship 7-series, this time in short wheelbase 750i form, was recently tested by the Edmunds Insideline guys. Their verdict: BMW has built a car that rivals the $37,000 more expensive Mercedes-Benz's S63 AMG power-sedan for a price of $89,870, which is less than the Mercedes-Benz S550.

The highlights are the BMW's 400 horsepower twin-turbo V8 that delivers effortless acceleration, excellent handling which makes the driver feel as if he/she were driving a much smaller car and a higher quality interior with surprisingly good ergonomics.

The complaints are few, if any, including fussy throttle tip-in but that's about it.

So BMW has created a flagship sedan combining a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds, excellent handling, top-notch quality, and ergonomics for the price that undercuts its largest competitor in this segment.

Congratulations to BMW for this impressive achievement. However, Audi has been working hard on their upcoming A8 which will feature a sharper and more striking exterior design with an even higher quality interior and sportier handling thanks to the sport differential and ABS systems so the competition is promising to come prepared.

But for now.....the BMW 7-series is king of its class

the rear end isn't exactly pretty in my opinion, but it's at least not offensive. and then there is the sheer engineering excellence!
i know that someone is going to start a flame war over this article, but i wish everyone who is sane would not give in. please...

The 7 sounds great but without having driven it yet I'd say the S looks way better, but well have to wait until we can drive it. Anyway well done BM.

Accelerating Lies
But there's still some controversy as to the size of this big engine, designed and built at Mercedes AMG. The car's window sticker as well as its fender badges read 6.3 liters. It's supposed to make you think of the famous Mercedes V8 of the 1960s.

Yeah, and Al Gore rides private jets for the greater good of the environment.

The car's 518-hp, double-overhead-cam, all-aluminum V8 actually displaces 6,208cc. That's 6.2 liters by anybody's measure except Mercedes. But then again, Mercedes also says the S63 AMG accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Another fib.

At our test track, this big, black behemoth sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. If you're disappointed, you've never experienced zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. This car is fast. Blisteringly so. And it's nearly a full second quicker than your Uncle Leo's S550.

Just don't pick any fights with the supercharged BMW B7 Alpina, which hits 60 mph in 5 seconds flat, or the twin-turbocharged S65 AMG V12, which rules the class with a 4.4-second performance.

Those cars also outrun the S63 through the quarter-mile, but we wouldn't sweat it. Unless you're planning to visit the Beverly Hills Drag Strip and Plastic Surgery Center, the S63's 13.4-second run at 107.8 mph is more than quick enough to take care of most of your needs.

For me the S63 and even S550 Still a better choice, But For the price, if you care about that, the bimmer with 118 hp less than the S63 is the smartes decision, the car compites with the S550, but still, "for me" S550 looks a way better than the 750.

Just for the records.....Great performance for such small engine...I hope those turbos works fine (no overheat). Torque is titanic at very low RPM....sweet..

The new 7 is really growing on me. I still have yet to see it in person. The article says it is faster than an S63. If I was in the market for this type of sedan (maybe one day when the markets improve), I might consider the 750i over the AMG (can't believe I'm saying that).

Interesting things going on at BMW...
A good friend of mine who works at a BMW center told me that a lot of previous generation 7 series owners are not getting the new 7.
The reason?
Lease payments have jumped from the $1,200-$1,300 to the $1,900-$2,000 for the new one. It is not because it is brand new, it is because BMW is now "filtering" their clientele...
A lot of ordered 7 series are becoming available.
Same thing with the X3 which has no support from BMW financial and the 3 series payments have gone up as well.

""Filtering" their clientele"

Not so, there are several reasons lease payments have jumped; the car is significantly more expensive, BMW does not of any lease support on new vehicles, and the biggest reason is the BMW is being realistic about the residual rates which have moved into the 45% range for a 3 year lease.

That's what I said in a way.
With inflated reisduals, lower payments.. lower residuals, increased payments. This is also on the 3 series...
They were loosing their shirts on these cars off lease, so now only the "wealthier" will be able to get a BMW... again.

TurboSpyder, that's why the new 7 series is looking so good. Previous 7 series was ugly, but this one is acceptable. BMW's executives now know where to search good designers for future cars.

You're in minority. But taking styling on side. The best thing in the new 7 series is rear wheel steering, it's helping very much this big car to achieve very good handling characteristic, like in smaller car. I'm really starting to like new 7 series even harder.

Hate the styling, looks ordinary and nothing special!
My money is on the next Jaguar XJ series, the next XJ promises to be sexy as with all the other recent models from Jag.

Every single BMW is a bargain. No surprise here.

Since when BMW is a bargain? Only the pre-owned one.
No wonder its profit goes down 90%.

Actually the preowned once are a little pricey Everybody knows how well the BMW keeps the value. If you want used car bargains you need to look for Japanese cars since their resale value is known to be poor.

Look for preowned Infiniti or Lexus cars. They are bargain priced compare with preowned BMWs.

Exactly star, the resale on the lexus and the infiniti stink! They obvioulsy dont hold their value well if your statement is true.

Edmunds said with 1ft of rollout (the way all the other "faster" mags test), they got 4.9 seconds 0-60 for the 750. I didn't bother looking up with they got for the S63 AMG with rollout but I'd imagine since they said they both got 5.2 seconds without the rollout that they probably also both got 4.9 seconds or thereabouts with it.

So there's your sub-5.0 second 0-60, and it doesn't change the fact that they still tied.

As good as the 7er is, the level of prestige and name plate the S-class brings to the table is unparalleled. In Europe as well as the rest of the world the S is recognized as the marquee name for luxury. Everyone knows the S-Class not everyone knows the 7 series.

With that said, as any flagship luxury barge should be, it's one comfortable place to be.

Still a BMW, or in other words a second rate German car, just above the Audi but far below a Mercedes. Ugly too. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
