DETROIT – General Motors Corp. says its restructuring plan is starting to take hold, improving the automaker's fortunes at least to the point that it won't need a $2 billion government loan installment that it had requested for March.

Chief Financial Officer Ray Young said Thursday that GM formally told the Obama administration's autos task force on Wednesday that it wouldn't need the money this month. But in an interview with The Associated Press, Young would not say when the struggling automaker would need more government money or whether it will reduce the size of its loan request

GM may be speaking too soon on this one.

I don't think sales will be recovering anytime in the near future, especially with a prolonged recession taking place.

I applaud GM's progress, but its still way too early to tell when or if this patient will ever be healthy enough to be removed from life support.

Don't worry, they're coming. I've seen Camaro's on car carriers while driving on the highway.

Please tell me where you spotted these. I would like to catch up with the carriers just to make sure they make it to a dealership...

That's not progress. We, the tax payers, made a huge mistake by giving them $13 billion dollars last month. $13 billion!!!! Now they are claiming so cavalierly that they don't need the other $2 billion. We shouldn't have given them that much to begin with.

well, here's an idea.... take your 13 billion back and YOU be responsible for the depression that follows. Quit hiding behinding "taxpayer dollars" shield, I swear everytime I hear someone talk about taxpayer dollars and GM I want to laugh.

Seriouly... I think we should have a national vote where everyone who votes to let GM fail is financially responsible for the loss in GDP, loss in tax revenue and expenditures due to the fact that the gov would have to feed/house 5-10 million people.

Stop whining, realize that the economy is a mess and be a part of the solution.

And for the record, it IS the govt's fault that GM got screwed the way it did... so since the Govt screwed up in regulating the finance/energy industries which resulted in a freeze on financing, I think it's only right that the govt LOANS GM money.

"We shouldn't have given them that much to begin with."

Sorry pal, you & I didn't give anyone anything. The govt loaned out some money..... you never GAVE any of your money to the government, they just took it. Get over it, if you want to complain about government waste, just start with the $3 trillion dollar gorilla in the room called IRAQ. Oh yea, 3 trillion there is nothing... 20billion for GM to continue contributing hundreds of billions a years to our economy is too much.....

"Seriouly... I think we should have a national vote where everyone who votes to let GM fail is financially responsible"

The only one responsible here is GM. Did other manufacturers manage to sell cars in the U.S. profitably? Yes they did.

"for the loss in GDP, loss in tax revenue"

GM creates net losses, not profits.

"and expenditures due to the fact that the gov would have to feed/house 5-10 million people"

There is no market vacuum. Failed GM will be replaced by strongholds established by German and Japanese car makers here. They'll move their factories, R&D centers and suppliers to the States and will make cars generating profits, not losses. And create jobs for those who worked for GM.

"Stop whining, realize that the economy is a mess and be a part of the solution."

When your team (economy) is loosing the game (recession), you need toughest and strongest players to regain the lead, not the weakest resuscitated ones (GM) that only let the team down.

"Sorry pal, you & I didn't give anyone anything. The govt loaned out some money....."

Which, most likely, will never be paid back. Difference between loaning and giving ceases to exist.

"if you want to complain about government waste, just start with the $3 trillion dollar gorilla in the room called IRAQ."

It's completely off topic. Do not introduce it, this is not iraqspies.com

Making one mistake does not justify making another one.

Fanboy,

you are too ignorant to even bother wasting my time with.

Yea, GM looses money (right now), but maybe you've forgotten the millions of people who rely on GM for their income directly & indirectly.

Almost every other manufacturer is having a hard time right now, so your "only GM is bad" idea is off

When your team (economy) is loosing in the game (recession), you don't pull your goalie (GM).

"They'll move their factories, R&D centers and suppliers to the States and will make cars generating profits, not losses. And create jobs for those who worked for GM."

Yea, Sure they will. An R&D building here, a (taxpayer subsidized) factory there,.... give me a break. The fact that you are unable to see that GM's got great products that actually generate REAL GDP for America is scary. Just what we need, more money going overseas and less domestically owned/controlled technology/industry. FOOL!

"Which, most likely, will never be paid back. Difference between loaning and giving ceases to exist."

Funny, I didn't know you worked for GM or for the US treasury. Gosh... if you know so much, why don't you share your financial knowledge with the rest of us.

neutral - 5, fanboy - 0

Iraq is perfectly relevant, it was a massive waste of money that we will never get back, and it didn't help the longterm technological/industrial might of America like GM does.

neutral - 6, fanboy - 0

Now fanboy, according to your comment above, you seem to be a weak player and should be taken out of the game. Goodbye!

Obviously 3 trillion is the high-ball estimate, but it includes the intangibles that are often overlooked like equipment depreciation, lost economic productivity, cost, shipping/tranport, etc.

In any event, the idea isn't Iraq, it's just that we waste TONS of money all over the place. Iraq is just an easy & glaring example.....

And i AM rootig for GM, I agree, it would be good for everyone.
