G37 Beating Genesis Coupe Gets A Retest And Widens The Gap

G37 Beating Genesis Coupe Gets A Retest And Widens The Gap
A couple weeks ago we ran a full test on the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6 Track. It ran respectable numbers, but not the kind of times we expected from a 300+ horsepower, rear-wheel drive coupe of its size.

Hyundai was disappointed too. So they went through the car following our track session looking for answers. What Hyundai's engineers found was a rear wheel alignment that was off spec and worn front tires paired with new rears.

Another problem was the car's ECU. It was programmed for damage control, not 0-to-60mph runs, so it was cutting power when it was needed most. We complained about this system in the test article and were sure the car would accelerate quicker if the damage control system was backed off a bit.

Headline is misleading. It doesn't widen the gap. More like, closes the gap. The G37 still outperforms it even with the upgrades.

Actually it beat the G37 overall, and now with improved figures it widens the gap between the two.

If that's your spin on it. But the article does not support the headline you've written.

You have to read the first article where the G37 loses to the Genesis coupe and go from there.

In the first article the Genesis wins based on value.

Quote:
It's the undeniable value equation that tips this test in the favor of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8. You simply get more car for your dollar with the Genesis coupe. Sure, it's not as much car as the 2009 Infiniti G37, but at two-thirds the cost, it doesn't have to be.
_____________________

The Genesis comes close in performance but still lags the G37 in the original etst. This new article is about how Hyundai has tweaked the pefromance to be more equivalent to the G. How is that widening the gap in performace?

Misleading headline.

The Genesis Coupe is still slower and worse performing than the G37.

Sorry Agent00J.

^^^

Excellent point. Agent00J should have more journalistic integrity than this. It is a misleading title and even then, it doesn't even make sense. A wider gap means worse performing. The Genesis was already worse performing than the G37.

DocMarten - Well if you first win overall as the Genesis did in the first test, and you improve your parameters while the competitor did not, then the gap of victory has been widened.

Wrong! This article is a comparison between two econoboxes. The GT-R vs Porsche argument was based on the fact that a car like the GT-R made by a economy brand like Nissan should not be compared with a car made by a premium maker like Porsche. Apples and oranges.

The GT-R is like a mini-Veyron. That is what people like Jeremy Clarkson, Chris Harris and Tiff Needle say.

They have driven some of the most expensive cars in the world.

Their opinion matters the most, they are smart chaps.

1. Hyundai must have known about the issue. During extensive testing of the car (they clearly did it) it wouldn't have been possible not to detect it. They have simply left it "as is", accepting the flaw.

Only now, when a motoring magazine puts them on notice, Hyundai poses as an ambitious and concerned company that listens to testers/customers and carries cost of improvement. Only they were actually forced to do it. Without Edmunds raising the problem, Hyundai wouldn't likely do anything.

2. It's not the first time when Hyundai was caught doing so.

This is the first crash test of Hyundai Genesis sedan:
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=1026

The car gets only AVERAGE rating for the frontal crash, with dummy's head bottoming out the airbag and hitting the steering wheel, increasing risk of injuries. There are serious issues with knee protection as well. There were also problem with side airbags. Very poor result for 2009 huge luxury car.

So the Hyundai modified the car and Genesis was retested:
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=1094

Now, after modifying the airbag and adding some knee padding the car did fine, getting Top Safety Pick. My only complaints are the AVERAGE rating for driver torso protection and safety cage stability in the side impact test:
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=1027

However, the question is: how could they not know about those safety issues? Two possibilities are there: either Hyundai didn't conduct internal crash tests according to well known IIHS standards (which would be very lame and disappointing) or they conducted them, only, again, accepted the unimpressive results and let it go.

Hyundai offers a G37 for a lot less, with Genesis. Considering how overpriced Nissan/Infiniti products are, that comes as no surprise.

Why are these two cars still even being compared. Neither the G37 or 3 series goes against the Genesis. The Genesis goes against the Eclipse, Mustang, and other cars like that.

Thank you. I don't know where this all started. Probably from the fact that the Genesis is so visually similar to the G coupe. Motor Trend's comparison of the Genenis to the Mustang and 370Z makes much more sense.

As mentioned in other forums; In all fairness, the Infiniti/Nissan group should get a chance to retune their car (as did Hyundai) and have a third test to fairly settle the score. Why doesn't anybody (but the German fanbois) else see this?

StarStar - 3/16/2009 3:49:15 PM

See what? Retune for what? Who cares which one is faster and which one is slower. These are econoboxes that offer the typical "chinese" built quality and zero feedback to the driver. Do I care if they go in 5.4 or 5.6 seconds from 0 to 60? Who drives garbage like Infiniti G37 or sporty Hyundais other than the high school dropouts working at McDonald in the night shift. These are not real enthusiasts cars, these are cars for the plebs who don't have any idea what a real car. These are for people who look at specs when comparing two cars and decide that the one that has more horsepower is better value. The problem is,

horsepower is not value. High level of engineering which results in perfect balance is real value. Unfortunately for the Japanese fanbois, these two cars have zero value when it comes to engineering and they are as balanced as a one legged midget. Two Asian abominations for the American public. Enjoy!

The G37 is nice but remember its a Nissan Skyline rebadged. The Genesis coupe simply makes it seem overpriced as an Infiniti. You lose the NAV option and a slightly better interior and not much else.

Whats nuts is a G37 can hit 45k and the Genesis at 30k looks like a complete and utter bargain. Even a G37 at 40k is overpriced.

Hyundai is really doing their thing!
