What recession: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Production Kicks Off with 14,000 Orders Already In
"Despite the economic situation, we have 14,000 sold orders, which speaks for itself," Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan told Inside Line. "It's pretty encouraging. As we expected, of the 14,000 Camaros sold, the majority are the SS V8. Those are the enthusiasts who have been anticipating this car. Those are our loyalists. There are lots of manual-transmission models in there. After that pent-up demand for the SS model, we anticipate that it will settle down to a 65/35 split. About 65 percent of the Camaros we sell will be the V6 model."

Rhadigan would not divulge total volume expectations on Camaro for this calendar year. But he said that Chevrolet would not put a cap on production. "No," he said when asked about volume limits. "We aren't limited. We will build what the market will bear."

Chevrolet also had some good internal news on the 2010 Camaro fuel economy numbers.

Rhadigan said that engineers had anticipated that the V6 Camaro would return 27 miles per gallon in city driving; instead, it is returning 29 mpg. The V6 model returns 18 mpg in city driving, he said. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V8 gets 16 mpg in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway on automatic-transmission models. The manual-transmission models return 25 mpg, according to Chevrolet. The EPA has yet to post any official fuel economy numbers on 2010 vehicles.

"engineers had anticipated that the V6 Camaro would return 27 miles per gallon in city driving; instead, it is returning 29 mpg. "

They must have meant 27mpg in highway driving.

Either way, 18/29 and 300+hp?!?!?!?!

Wow...to think it wasn't too long ago that 300hp was the benchmark of "big power" and you pretty much needed a decent-sized V8 to get there. Gotta love direct injection.

Don't like the interior much though, I can't stand "retro" interiors. Windowline is too high as well, would have been nicer 20-30mm lower.

Overall, very sweet ride though, Ive seen a few from time to time, very sweet looking rides, especially at night with the halo headlights.

Just like the Hyundai has crossed lines and is selling like snatch, I see the Camaro doing better. Those days of no cross shopping is history.

I need to test drive one. Hopefully it is better than a Mustang.

Looking at the Camaro, it has elements of the original, but this is as much a modern day coupe as the Mustang or Porsche 911 in paying homage to its heritage. This design is very forward and I don't really see a large retro look. Different strokes really. It's your money if you love it, or loath it is what it comes down to. It's good to have a heritage to go back to and American Automotive history is loaded, that's all good.

Nice to know that GM actually produces something that people will buy...

Now they need to have this type of hype on their other cars...
