Audi R2: Is this the car that finally cements Audi’s reputation as the world’s greatest sports car manufacturer?
Not content with shaking up the automotive order among the likes of the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage with its stunning R8, the company is now planning a new mid-engined model to take on the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes SLK.

The high-performance two-seater cabriolet is codenamed R2, and is being developed with VW. Audi’s sister firm is also believed to be putting the finishing touches to a production version of the BlueSport concept car revealed at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show.

The mid-engined R2 gets an all-new chassis and suspension derived from the MkV VW Golf. A four-wheel-drive variant is also a possibility, using a development of the Golf R32’s Haldex system. Plus, there are rumours that a hybrid – with electric power driving the front wheels – is planned, to help Audi reduce the CO2 emissions of its range.

The engine line-up is certain to include a mix of 2.0-litre four cylinder and 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol units. A diesel is under consideration, but it’s unlikely to be offered from launch. All models will offer a choice between six-speed manual and seven-ratio R tronic semi-automatic gearboxes.

Performance should be stunning, with power outputs ranging from 200bhp to a spectacular 380bhp. Top speed will be limited to 155mph, while the 0-60mph time is likely to drop below six seconds.

The R2 continues to develop Audi’s successful design theme as the tail-lamps of the new car will be sculpted to mimic the Q of its famous Quattro badge, just as they are on the R8.

A third rear brake light will sit above Audi’s badge, while the engine cover is to be kept free of aerodynamic extras. Instead, an underbody diffuser helps to improve the car’s stability at speed.

Audi is 10x better than BMW.

Here is a typical BMW driver:

1. He ditched this BMW on a piece of absolutely straight road. Only M3 drivers can achieve this.

2. Considering how he treats the car, clearly it does not belong to him.

VW owns Audi, Lambo, Bentley, and is partnered with a controlling Porsche. The R8 is the darling of the sport car segment right now, and a mid-engined R2 will just add to this equation. Really simple. Audi is very progressive and one of the most forward thinking company at this time.

Audi=Hot Newness.

Audi is the best German automaker to me because they embody all the best attributes of the others.

Worlds greatest sports car manufacturer? WHAT? Is this a joke? I love Audi, but Ferrari and Lambo are way above Audi.

"This has to be the biggest joke yet, most Audi's are overweight nose heavy barges!!!"

Uh, not the R8 and if this article is true, not the R2 either--Audi's sports cars, they are. A mid-mounted engine doesn't produce a front-heavy car, in case you didn't know.

I agree that this article is stupid though. "Finally" is so misleading--it's not like they've been pursuing this position for decades; the R8 came out in 2007. Why would they be the world's greatest? They may be able to nudge Porsche but no mere premium car company will ever displace Ferrari.

The S4 convertible is one of the biggest barges of them all! Even with quattro, it is super nose heavy. 57/43 weight = not brilliant. S5 continues this tradition.

"Is this the car that finally cements Audi’s reputation as the world’s greatest sports car manufacturer?"

Tbese postings get worse and worse. How can anybody judge the above question when the car hasn't even been released yet? It's like asking if 2010 is going to be the best year ever? Nobody knows. It hasn't happened yet.

I don't believe that Porsche will allow Audi to build this unless the performance quotient is below the Boxster/Cayman. Why would Porsche allow this to cannabalize sales. VW is already thinking about a small
displacement 4 for their mid engine roadster to compete with the Mazda Miata. I had read that Porsche was thinking of recreating a 914 with this platform. My point is there would have to be a clear gap in performance even if Porsche decides to share this platform with Audi.

Further-I doubt the accuracy of AutoExpress on this, especially allowing an engine from the TT-RS with 340 HP to go into this R2. The only possibility would be perhaps with a 4 cylinder turbo from the TT or TTS. The 2.5 5 cylinder turbo(which sounds fantastic by the way)I think would out perform the current Boxster/Cayman 2.9 6 cylinder and 3.4 cylinder flat sixes.

hahahaahha this site is ridiculous! They will post anything good about Audi even if the title is absurd like the one above, or if its spelled wrong like one i saw yesterday. Its also seems like only the bad new about BMW gets posted in a heartbeat, while the good news gets posted days late with silly titles. Autospies = amature spies, maybe the individual who decides what gets posted is an amature, or they are biased, probably both.

i drive an audi and a bmw. i love them both but if i had a choice and had to choose 3 cars from one manufacturer i would have to go with audi. i want an S5, S8 and R8. i don't think i want 3 bimmers, my only 2 would be a 650 (because i can't stand the body kit on the M6) and the 550 withe the M package, beautiful cars but there isn't a 3rd. mercedes benz only has one for me, the amg s class.
