Volvo planning to use four-cylinder engines in the near future
It common knowledge that car manufacturers are opting for smaller engines and going for more efficient technologies, one company however is going a step forward beyond offering just a few hybrid models in their range to appease eco-conscious customers.

Auto Motor und Sport reports confirming that Volvo will be using four-cylinder engines exclusively in the near future. Volvo claims that this four-cylinder unit is equally powerful than others engines equipped with more cylinders. This bold move by Volvo makes perfect sense at this time considering the fact that EU regulations will bring down allowable emissions levels to an average of only 120g/km by the year 2015 with a long term target of 95g/km by 2020. Meeting these requirements early will save the Swedish company time and money and permit it to focus on other areas of future product development.

You are aware that Lexus has already said they are looking into producing a smaller car then the IS (ie. a 4 cylinder).
Freaking fan boys.

Volvo is apparently going back to its roots. Remember when all Volvos had a 4-cylinder. Albeit largish ones, but they were turbocharged and they made good enough power. Volvo has never seen itself as a luxury car manufacturer so I don't see why we should either. They are family cars, and family means thrifty as much as it means safety.
