Salvation Of A Marque? 600HP LF-A Supercar Slated To Make Debut At Tokyo Auto Show

Salvation Of A Marque? 600HP LF-A Supercar Slated To Make Debut At Tokyo Auto Show
Right on the heels of the announcement that the 2010 British Auto Show is off comes news today from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association that the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, slated for late October this year, will be shortened by four days. But at least it's still on — and Toyota will make an extra effort to help stimulate the show-going public, a source tells Inside Line.

Some excitement will be generated by the fact that Toyota's new president, Akio Toyoda, will be taking over in June. Sure to be more interesting to the show-going public is this tidbit: The production version of the 600-horsepower V10-powered Lexus LF-A supercar, our source says, will not make its debut in Frankfurt but instead will be unveiled in Tokyo.

You can always hope, and 600hp is a great increase considering there are station wagons out there with more than the 500 hp originally stated.

Lets hope they have refreshed it to be more current as well. This car has been in gestation far too long.

Lexus is hardly "exotic". They are repackaged Toyotas after all. And stunning design? Really? It looks pretty much like their normal slightly-different-than-toyota fascia.

the BMW 7 didn't copy anything. it's not terribly different from the previous version. and really, the lexus anything is simply a copy of a less expensive toyota. even if lexus was copied by 10 other companies, that would not make their designs "stunning" by any means. they are simply aren't.

Really, but no really!!! Are you for real? Do you do this on purpose? I mean, you have to! There is no way somebody would actually think what you think and post it on a blog with no shame or embarrassment.
It is one thing to like a brand more than another, but the extend of your comments makes me think that if you are not doing this on purpose and for entertainment only, then, there must be something wrong with you.
Are you on some kind of drugs? Legal or illegal? Did you suffer from some trauma? are you seeking any help?
I do feel bad for you if this is the way you are.

Great news for Lexus, if the show isn't canceled.

Right now the Detroit Three, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Renault, Lamborghini, Hino Motors, Isuzu, Nissan have canceled. More are rumored to not be there but none are confirmed.

Gonna be tough to sell a $300k+ supercar with little sports-car prestige in today's environment. I guess if it's a hybrid you'll get a few people in the high-brow, "green" market who want to be driving the fastest "environmentally friendly" car that money can buy, but I can't imagine that's a large segment. With Nissan making noise about a luxury version of the GT-R (at under half the price), and/or an Infinity version (conceptually the same thing), and the Fisker Karma purportedly coming soon, it's going to be an awfully small market.

agreed, Between toyota & honda, their business savy conservatism will most likely mean that halo cars dont make it to production. Ford tends to be this way too when times get tough.

GM/Nissan tend to be "cars guys" before all else, thus we have the GT-R and ZR1, even though the economy sucks bigtime.

I for one am very happy to see the official release of the LF-A, the car is ready and will set the bar high. To the OP saying the LF-A will beat a Veyron, I agree in a lot of ways it will. Yes, 1000 hp can make you go 250+ mph, but the LF-A was designed to be the complete package; "do it all better than everyone." It won't be the quickest, it won’t be the fastest, most luxurious, or even best looking, but it will do all of these "at least" in the top tier if not better. Back in 07’ I believe that Lexus was caught off guard with the GT-R and the ZR-1; becasue back then Lexus was trying to be the most efficient supercar, but times have changed. The LF-A was supposed to be 500hp and now we are hearing 600hp, a smart move if you want to be in elite territory. Regardless of what HP is has it will be one of the most efficient and trouble free setups period. These cars will get gobbled up by the rich so they can drive them around as an everyday cruiser and scare the crap out of people with its F1 sound. ?

Actually, a Veyron would have it's work cut out against a Subaru WRX on a twisty circuit. It's massive power/torque, 4wd and its aerodynamic braking make it a killer in straights and gentler sweepers, but at two tonnes plus kerb, that type of mass butchers all that power when it comes to braking / turnin.

If Lexus has managed to keep weight down on this car, then it will be a good drive and a wicked performer even with rwd only. But if it's some bloated pig, forget it, it will be ignored and Lexus will have missed a golden opportunity.

honda shook up even ferrari and porsche when they first brought out the original acura nsx: comparable performance, yet as easy to drive fast as a civic or accord. AND the reliability of production hondas, NOT the fussiness of overtweaked machines like the supercars had BEFORE they had to match the NSX in that department.

the Lexus LF-A will likely repeat the pattern.

Interior needs to be mind-blowing on the production version. Concept interior is cool, but better not get watered down.

I don't think it will have a problem selling in the short term. Long term is a different story. I would hope that Lexus has a new SC that echoes the LF-A coming out shortly after the LF-A finally reaches production.

I'd have to agree with Baby and fact is this supercar was created to smoke cars like the ZR-1 and GT-R. There's no way this car is not going to be nothing less than stellar. Last year I predicted this car would be produced and have 600hp. I also predicted it would have 0-60 times under 3 sec and 1/4 mi over 130mph. Mark my words this halo car will be the wonder of the century. Toyota Motor Corp. is a very capable phenomenon. Lexus is the heir that represents the legacy of the Toyoda Heritage. The LF-A will not be anywhere close to the GT-R in that laps time chart. Only thing it may have is the level of prestige. With that being said, all the cars on that list are ultra exclusive and ultra expensive hyper cars, a class of cars the GT-R will never reach in terms of brand and curb appeal.
