President's Auto Task Force Expected To Give More Aid To GM/ Chrysler
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that within days the President’s Task Force on Autos is expected to announced more government aid for embattled automakers GM and Chrysler.

Interviews with Task Force members suggest the administration doesn’t want to automakers to slip into bankruptcy protection. Rather they are expected to say they see viable futures for the companies, but only if management, union, and bondholders make sacrifices. A new “firm timeline” for concessions will be provided.

The Task Force has been charged with a very daunting task that some pundits say they are ill prepared for. The team is led by Steven Rattner, a former journalist, who analogizes saving the auto industry to solving a Rubik’s cube.

“It’s like a Rubik’s cube, trying to untwist it and trying to get all the colors to line up,” he said. “So we’ve learned a lot about how car dealers work, and how companies get paid when they sell a car to a dealer, and why there are a certain number of dealers more than are optimal. Have we learned everything? Of course not, but I think we are learning what we need to learn to do this job.”
Besides not yet achieving concessions from the UAW and bondholders, predicting future auto demand is also a big challenge for the team.

“The biggest variable” the team has had to wrestle with, he says, is “what the demand for cars will be in five years.”
It appears likely that GM will be receiving the $16.6 billion it is asking for, but is unlikely to be getting it as a lump sump, but rather in a metered fashion as certain negotiating milestones are met.

If the government wants to keep throwing money at the giant car making toilet that is General Motors then so be it. However, is there any way I can request that MY tax dollars go to help someone other than GM? They need to sell the jets, stop giving employees new cars every 6 months, stop buying Viagra for the retired union workers, and dismantle the ball and chain known as the UAW.

Wow, talk about letting everyone know you are most likely 16 years old...

1) Corporate jets were just a way for congress to make a big fuss over nothing. The loss of corporate jets has made GM more inefficient (like congress) and wastes precious time & money.

2) GM doesnt give its employees cars every 6 months, select higher-ups get the ability to participate in a product evaluation which they pay for. On top of that, they have to buy/lease a new GM vehicle every 4 years (used to be every 2) and detailed product reports are given to design & engineering. The vehicles are assigned to the select employees (they cannot choose) and on top of all of this, the employees are TAXED on their usage of the vehicles. Seeing how GM is an automobile company, wouldn't it make sense that their own people test their cars? It's a bigger gain for GM as a company than it is for the employee, but I'm sure this is too complicated for you to understand.

3) The UAW isn't the problem, the a fallen economy is.

So essentially, you want GM to give up its aircraft (which it already did) and be more inefficient with its execs, stop testing its vehicles in real-life driving, and offshore all production since its cheaper.

Veeracer---- did you even bother to do any research before you post?
